Space 753 sq. ft.
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bedrooms, large living room, bathroom, kitchen, large patio. Sleeps 5.

A stay in any of our three traditional Mani homes offers our guests a unique experience in holiday home rental. As a result of our own extensive travel experiences we have made every effort to furnish our houses as if they were homes, rather than a rental facility.

The Bungalow is a one-storey stone house built in the local style, with stone walls and a tile roof. It is only 100m from the main beach of Stoupa. Situated towards the back of a 1900 sq m garden, it affords quiet and privacy in the center of the village. The main feature of this house is its spacious living room, with its charming fireplace and a small nook with a media center and a large bookcase with a good selection of both adult and children's books. The two bedrooms open directly into the living room. Just of the kitchen there is a covered veranda, providing a perfect setting for breakfast or late night snacks.

Outside, there is a beautifully laid flagstone patio on two sides of the house, ideal for children's play.

STOUPA VILLAGE: Stoupa is a very well known family vacation destination. The Bungalow is located approximately 100 m from the main sandy beach of Stoupa. The village is built around three bays. Two of the beaches have very fine sand and are child friendly due to the shallow waters along the shoreline. The third beach, Halikoura, has small pebbles and is an ideal place for snorkeling. Umbrellas and sunbeds are available for rental. Just off the beaches, there are some cafes that offer cold drinks and light meals for lunch. Kayaks and pedaloes can be rented from either Stoupa or Kalogria beach. Small motorboats are also available for rental from Stoupa beach. Because Stoupa is a small village, everything is within an easy walk. Tavernas, fine gift shops, a pharmacy, supermarket and sundry rental shops are all in the village. For more adventurous souls, cars, motor scooters, and bicycles can also be rented.

EXCURSIONS: Stoupa is in the middle of a very beautiful region called the Mani. Along the coast there are several other charming villages to visit (Kardamili, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Dimitrios, and Trachila). Each is unique and all are well worth a visit. In addition, there is a paved path along the coastline between Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos. It is specifically designated for either pedestrian or bicycle use, and is about 2 km in length. It offers wonderful sea views from one side and a mountain background on the other. Also, in a distance of 4 - 18 km from Stoupa, there are lovely mountain villages to explore that take you back in time to 50 or more years ago. Most of them have a small taverna or two where you can stop and enjoy dishes prepared with local products. There are two separate loops that can be driven. Each of them passes through several villages and you can take anywhere from one hour to all day to complete your journey.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: The area is rich in wild flowers almost all year round. During the spring and autumn, there are various interesting walks in the area. There are local books available that describe the most popular walks. In Kardamili, there is a mountaineering shop that offers guided mountain tours and bicycle tours. Scuba diving is also centered in Kardamili.

The Bungalow was built in the local Mani style, using stone, wooden ceilings, and a tile roof. The walls are 50cm thick, which helps to keep it warm in winter and cooler in summer. It is tastefully furnished and gives one the feeling of home. Although it is in the center of the village and very close to the main beach, it is very private and quiet. It is built at the backof a 1900 sq. m. garden and faces an empty plot. It is surrounded by shade trees, mostly mulberry. There is a beautiful flagstone patio that covers 2 sides of the house. This area offers a private spot for dining, and is perfect as a play area for small children. There is outdoor furniture, including 2 sunbeds, plus a small grill and plenty of beach toys for small children. Parking is available right next to the house. This house is also very well suited for off season holidays and/or over wintering.

Lovely bungalow in great location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Stoupa late but had no problem in finding the bungalow with the directions given to us by Tracy and Takis, the owners. Inside it was charming and all we expected, pleasingly rustic, simply but adequately furnished, plenty of room, very clean, comfortable and well equipped, it had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. It was a bonus to have beach towels provided, and great to have a big selection of books to choose from; all extras which added to the comfort. The bungalow is perfectly situated, 100 metres from a lovely sandy beach, as well as a string of tavernas each serving excellent traditional Greek cuisine. A supermarket and a good bakery only a little further to walk in the other direction. Everything we needed within such easy distance. Despite being in the middle of town it was very quiet. Tracy and Takis treated us almost like family; Tracy was extremely helpful though the booking process and emails before our holiday and they both made us very welcome during our stay. We only had a week, it wasn’t long enough, we loved Stoupa and I’m sure we will be back.

Owner's Response: In corresponding with these guests, I soon realized that they had a very narrow time limit for their holiday. Being retired, I still remember how important a holiday is in helping to renew your energies and be able to return to your job ready to take on the tasks at hand. I also recognize that, because the Bungalow is in the heart of Stoupa, yet in a very private setting, it is ideal for a relaxing holiday. I wanted to make every effort to make this happen for them. We are always pleased to get to know our guests. We consider it an added bonus to our business. We are always pleased to hear that the feeling was mutual. We feel fairly certain that they will return. Takis & Tracy Kyriakeas, owners

A Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week at the Bungalow and loved its location and its authenticity. I've some to Stoupa several times in the last twenty years and often have stayed in a local hotel. This time we decided to rent a home and we are so glad we did. Unlike some of the other offerings on this site, this place seemed to come closest to a real Greek experience. It's a very short walk to Stoupa's large, sandy beach and all the wonderful restaurants along the seaside. And Tracy and Takis could not have been more helpful in advising us where we might go down the Mani to take advantage of this special part of Greece.

An HONEST review

  • 2 of 5

My family and I stayed in this bungalow in July 2014. I knew it would be rustic, but I was not expecting how rustic. The stone structure was built in the 1970s, and not much seems to have changed since then. The property sits on a large plot with a two storey dwelling perpendicular to it. When we drove in, my first impression was concern for where I brought my family. The grounds were not well kept at all. Lots of weeds, garbage and equipment scattered about. The house smelled moldy and I suspect it had been locked up for a bit. The owner hurried us in, very quickly showed us the linens and told us we were responsible to walk our garbage up to the church, then asked for her money and was on her way. She left us stranded without working internet, cable, no hot water and no way to communicate with her. We managed to contact her son George at their other house and eventually the other matters were figured out. As for the garbage, the church was a 10 minute walk from the house! In the summer heat this was unbelievable. George kindly agreed to collect it with his.

We travelled to Stoupa with many extended family members. I viewed the homes these other parties rented and this bungalow paled in comparison. Yet, we seemed to be paying the same if not more. Was embarrassed to show ours. I considered it more a place to sleep, and was keen to get out at the brink of dawn.

The furnishing were very dated, but not in a good way. Looked like a mix of garage sales and grandmas old left overs. The bathroom was small and shower did not have much water pressure - my husband preferred to shower in the outdoor shower. The house generally felt dark and dirty. Definitely, little pride in ownership.

I have rented many vacation properties off this site, and several in Greece. All of them (except for this one), impressed me. Sadly, this was a let down and overpriced for what we received.

Owner's Response: We have made every effort to furnish and maintain the house as if it were a home, rather than a typical rental unit. Clearly, this guest has viewed our home with a very different eye than the countless others who have stayed in the Bungalow. What she has described as rustic is viewed by others as charming. I do not intend to dispute her perception of the house, as that is personal. However, we are concerned about the title of this review, since the implication is that our 11 other reviews on Homeaway are not honest. This is not the case. For any potential renters who may read this review, we would only say that you should read the 11 other 4 & 5 star reviews of this property, and make up your own minds. We take great pride in what we have to offer and know that it is well above the average in this area. The furnishings and landscaping surrounding the house can be clearly seen in the photos on the website. We also go out of our way to assist our guests. We even made the arrangements for this family's pick up and return from Athens airport by a local taxi who took them straight to the house. The difficulty in accessing the internet was resolved within 2 hours of our hearing of the problem. What we will address is her comments about the cost. We rent our houses legally with permits from the National Bureau of Tourism (EOT). Because we are legal, we pay the VAT for our guests, all fees, and income tax as well, thus supporting the Greek economy. This means that we cannot be competitive in our prices with others who are renting without permits. I do know that at least one member of the M. family stayed in an apartment that is not legal, so I can understand that our house would seem more costly in comparison. We have been renting the Bungalow for close to 30 years, and have worked hard to keep it well maintained. While is not modern, nor are the furnishings, many guests refer to it as their home. We feel that this is a more accurate view of our house. Takis and Tracy Kyriakeas

Lovely bungalow in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful holiday in beautiful Stoupa and this bungalow was a great place for us to stay. We loved the traditional stone, the interior furnishings, the outdoor space and the great location - it was very near to the beach and restaurants and within easy walking distance of the supermarkets. The bungalow was clean and well-maintained and the owners were very helpful.

Stoupa in October

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from 16 days at the end of October in this lovely bungalow in Stoupa. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The weather was wonderful, and because the bungalow is so close to the Messinian Gulf, we swam and sat on the sandy (yes, sandy!) beach everyday. Even though the season was officially 'over,' more than half of the restaurants and tavernas were open; the food was the best we have ever enjoyed on vacation--fresh, healthy, inexpensive. There are local markets as well and a terrific bakery. If you have a car, you can easily take short day trips; there are several small villages within 10 miles of Stoupa (Agios Nikolaus and Kardamili); both are worth visiting (great food at both). We also visited Trachili; the drive there is spectacular and the village is breathtaking.

The landscape in and around Stoupa is rugged. Everywhere there are churches and ruins; you really do feel cut off from the craziness of the rest of the world.

The bungalow met our needs quite well. Both bedrooms have wall-mounted heating/air conditioning units. The bungalow is equipped with linens, towels, dishes, and almost everything you need for a very comfortable stay.

We flew into Athens, and while most web maps say it is a 3.5 hour drive to Stoupa, be prepared for more like 5. Because the Athens airport is outside the city, there is no need to get caught up in Athens traffic. Stoupa is an easy one hour drive from Kalamata. If you drive from Athens, make sure to visit Ancient Corinth (Korinthos); it is right off the main road to Stoupa.

We found Stoupa and the bungalow on the home website; we took a leap of faith that it would be a good place, and we were right.

Lovely Stoupa

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely family holiday at the Bungalow in late May 2011. The weather is not too hot then and beaches not too busy. The bungalow is a great retreat and so secluded, with a perfect rustic charm. We grew more in love with the place every day, after a wet & muddy arrival. It does not have all the luxuries of the new developments and the shower room is not its best feature, but it is clean and worked well for us - a young family. We were mainly out all day and ate all evening meals out in the many good taverners. Recommend this property for its rustic charm and very close proximity to the town and beachs.

Owner's Response: It is always pleasing to us to hear from our guests that the Bungalow offers an "oasis" of privacy right in the heart of the village. Because of its location, 100 meters from the main beach of Stoupa, and because of the flagstone patios on 2 sides, it is ideal for families with small children.

Stoupa is a coastal village in the unspoiled Mani region. The village is built around three bays, two of which have sand beaches that are among the most beautiful on the Mani Peninsula. They are well suited for families because of the shallow waters near the shore. The third bay has a pebble beach, and is ideal for snorkeling. Paddle boats, kayaks, and small motor boats are available for rental. Motorcycles, bicycles and cars are also available for rental in the village. The village is set amongst olive groves with the Taygetos Mountains rising to the east. The climate is mild in winter, possibly the warmest in continental Europe. Stoupa is within easy reach of a 24 hour medical centre (2 km), and one hour from the major city of Kalamata.

Other Activities: snorkelling, small boat and kayak rental

Golf: Costa Navarino is a high quality golf complex 2 hours from Stoupa in Messinia.
