Mount Peter Skiing: Mount Peter is located in Southern New York in the heart of the Hudson Valley, just a short drive away. We are known for many things, like our famous Free Beginner Ski and Snowboard School, our great snowmaking and expert grooming, an awesome terrain park, our top-notch racing and development programs, and our family atmosphere.
Did you know that Mount Peter was started in 1936 by Macy’s Department Store to show off and sell their ski fashion? The mountain that started so many years ago as a savvy marketing tool has grown to be a cherished place for people to fall in love with winter. Mount Peter - known as “The Friendly One” – is the oldest operating ski area in New York State, and one of the few remaining family operated ski areas in the country.
Snow Tubing: December 26, 2010 —March 02, 2011
The Orange County Snow Tubing & Winter Sports Park opens for the season on December 26. The park is situated in the Thomas Bull Memorial Park, Route 416, Montgomery.
The 800 foot snow tubing hill features two cable lifts, ten groomed lanes and specially designed tubes built for a speedy, thrilling ride.
The park also features an ice skating rink, sledding hill and cross-country ski trails. People must provide their own equipment for these free activities.
The Graham M. Skea Lodge, located on top of the tubing hill, offers beautiful views of the Hudson Valley and features a concession/restaurant and large stone fireplace.
Birthday party packages and youth group bookings are available for snow tubing.
Weather conditions may affect the opening date. For more information, please contact the Orange County Department of Parks.
Ice Caves: One of the most exciting and accessible hiking destinations in New York are the Ice Caves in Sam’s Point Preserve, which are, thankfully, meticulously guarded by the Nature Conservancy. Containing ice caves in the depths of its crevasses, this is the greatest open fault in the United States (known geologically as the Ellenville Fault.) The strange environment consisting of globally-rare, ridge-top dwarf pines, huckleberry and blueberry fields, beautiful flowers, deep crevasses and phenomenal views seems to transport the hiker to places more arid than lush New York… perhaps the craggy, dry southwest. The 5,400 acre preserve is located atop the world-class rock climbing Shawangunk (the “Gunks”) range, which is close to the wonderful college town of New Paltz, where you can find lots of good restaurants, shopping and lodging. The area was formed on the ocean floor about a half-billion years ago when a layer of shale formed and was pushed up into the air over time.
We really enjoyed our stay at Mountain Villa. The house was clean and the location was very quiet. Rick was very accommodating to a special request. We look forward to staying there again!
From the first night we hit the comfortable beds and felt like we were home. It was the perfect size for our group needs, had all the amenities provided and the owner was always available in a flash! We needed a blender for a recipe and that same day when it was discovered to be missing, the owner purchased a brand new appliance and brought it straight over. It is definitely a sanctuary in the great outdoors surrounded by wildlife. As any family when there are kids you are always keeping them fed and the kitchen was perfect for cooking and even entertaining. We had a lot of distance to travel when we went out for the day because of where our friends were located or who we had to see but it was great knowing we could "come home" and relax.
This home was lovely. We were able to be close to everything we wanted to see and visit family. Loved being in the woods and seeing the deer.
Thank you for the wonderful accommodations!! We enjoyed our stay so much. This place is amazingly peaceful and was very clean. It was also nice to have a kitchen, we definitely took advantage of that amenity! We did a lot of visiting between Brooklyn, NYC, Tuxedo, Patterson, and Wallkill. After all the touring it was a very comfortable wonderful place to come back to.
Rick & Heidi, Thank you so much for the use of your home. We spent 7 nights there and there were 8 of us. It was clean and had a well stocked kitchen with plenty of towels for the bathrooms. It is a nice quiet location with a big yard so on our last day we set up a net and played badmitton and volleyball. We saw deer in the backyard. We were there to visit the Watchtower facilities in Patterson and Tuxedo and Walkill. The location was great! We even went into the city twice! We enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you for being so helpful and accommodating!!
