It's simply the house we are going to considerate in our future family vacations. We were always in contact with Kate and David for any need we had. The house is full full equipped if you're a cooker one (we even made grilled pizza!). Even though the house is in front of the street, you get to sleep like a baby.
The pictures of this home are out dated but that was not the real concern. The reviews before us describe a clean nice well maintained beach front home. That is not the case. When we arrived the first thing we noticed was how run down the place is compared to the pictures. It was dirty, we went to town and purchased our own linens. The showers did not drain and the washer and dryer do not work. All windows are secured with bars that do not open. If there was a fire or any other emergency you would not be able to get out. The doors are also secured with metal screen doors and the front door has a padlock at the bottom. We were told to keep all valuables locked in a room secured by another metal door and then found out there will also be a security guard on the property at night just in case anyone tries to break in. The manager/owner also entered the home when we were not there. We would never take the time to complain like this but thought we wouldn't want anyone else to be as excited as we were to get there and be so disappointed. If given the choice we would have cancelled immediately and stayed elsewhere.
Nice house, well situated in front of the beach (just a small road in between). You see the ocean from the house. 3, good size rooms. We just miss having a hammock.
This low-frills property is directly across from the beautiful beach near a sleepy (practically rural) village. We spent our days plunging into the surf with our 7 & 10 year old kids, and had a great time. Note that the surf can be rough on this beach with dangerous rip tides, so you have to be careful. We rented some boogie boards and were thrilled. For true surfers this place would be heaven.
That said, it was our first trip to Costa Rica, so we weren't quite prepared for the multiple locks on the doors, the need to lock all valuables away in a room with a metal door, the house alarm and night guard. We were told this wasn't that unusual that the only thing to worry about was petty theft. I suppose in the end we were glad the owners took precautions, but the house had clearly been broken into before. The place is slightly run down and not luxurious. That said, it has a beautiful setting on a wild, gorgeous beach and the price is very competitive. There's a bit of wildlife in the area and we were fortunate to see brilliant scarlet red macaws. Perfect for just chilling on the beach and to use as a base camp for day trips to Manuel Antonio or Jaco.
Three generations (including 7-yr old grandson) and everyone loved this 5-day vacation place! Setting is outstanding: ocean waves big enough to surf, but not so big the daring amongst us weren't out everyday jumping the waves, starting at sunrise. At the edge of a little fishing village, it has one of the longest open stretches of beach you can imagine. House has big picture windows for the ocean view, ceiling fans, good-sized kitchen, outdoor barbecue facilities, long front porch for with picnic table -- great spot for reading and watching the waves crashing. Wonderful plus of an outside shower to wash away the sand and ocean salt before coming inside. Very quiet area; village has a small SuperSol (market); and a little bar that serves homemade ice-cream ($1) in the afternoon. One of loveliest beaches in the area. Memorable sunrises, and sunsets.
This beach house was very well maintained with easy access to a clean, quiet beach in a small, coastal town. It was very well secured with a locking pantry that we could put our valuables in when we would leave on daily excursions. The beaches in Costa Rica are not privately owned, so there was a little more traffic on the weekend with people driving and parking on the beach - but the rest of the time we practically had the ocean to ourselves for surfing and swimming. The manager was very attentive to any problems or questions we had and provided great details and guidance to the area. We were also fortunate to have the owner visiting next door while we were there and he was a valuable resource of info as well. Being this was the off-week in the off-season, there was only one restaurant open nearby - but that didn't matter because it was fabulous! I would go back to Esterillos Oeste and recommend it to others.
Miles of pristine beach. Esterillos Oeste is a warm neighborly beach town on the Pacific Ocean where the jungle meets the sea. 14 miles south of the active beach town Jaco and 28 miles north of majestic Manuel Antonio National Park.
A mix of local and western residents creates a festive blend of hospitality where everyone is a welcomed local. The ocean provides world class long and short board surfing where friendly locals are rooting for you...
Miles and miles of beach for walking, running, horseback riding, or biking; where most of the time it is just you, the ocean, the sun, thoughts of gratitude and the occasional coconuts.
Eco-friendly activities locally or a short drive - zip- lines, horseback riding, surfing, ATV, jungle walks, monkey tours, waterfalls, sport fishing, golf, diving and much more. Pure Jungle and Ocean.
And do not miss the beach town flare of Jaco - sushi to steaks, gift shopping to fine art collectables; in a friendly Central American atmosphere.
Other Activities: Over the Christmas holidays, our south-facing beach enjoys both sunrise and sunset. Always warm, we are in bathing suits from first thing in the morning until dark and enjoy swimming and surfing both as the sun rises and sets. So many stars at night! Our beach is so smooth and flat -- ideal for running and bicycling -- it looks like a vast mirror at lower tides and is awesome just to walk on and collect seashells. We collect driftwood and enjoy bonfires on the beach any time of year. We enjoy the scarlet macaws who feast in the almond trees on the property and are sometimes blessed to see the white-faced monkeys in the back yard. The calls of the birds and the crash of the waves are peaceful and blissful. When company visits, our must-do activities include zip-lines, nature tours in Manuel Antonio, horseback riding, waterfall hiking, shopping in Jaco for wood treaures and clothing, as well as surf lessons.
Golf: Less than 25 minutes away in the Los Suenos Resort, La Iguana, is a challenging eighteen-hole championship golf course designed by Ted Robinson.
