Great Neighborhood, nice getaway from the city

  • 5 of 5

The flat was clean and spacious. Netflix and appleTV available when we needed a break. The neighborhood was awesome, a few bars and deli's really close by. It's away from the city, so it's a good escape when you don't feel like being near a jillion other people. Two of my friends missed their flight, and Elito was able to find them lodging in the same apartment for one more night. He was very accommodating. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

Truly enjoyed our stay in Brooklyn!

  • 5 of 5

We really found the apartment to be just as pictured. It's been newly renovated and perfectly suited our needs. It was very clean. They stocked the fridge with bottled water and there was even coffee, filters and spices provided if you wanted to cook in. Elito, the property manager, was very responsive, accommodating and shared lots of good information on the area. There were lots of restaurants/bars in the area as well as a grocery store right on the corner. We particularly enjoyed Dough (for those morning donuts), Chilos (great tacos), Speedy Romeo (excellent pizza) and The Black Swan. There were many more restaurant/bar options in the area but not enough days to try them all. The apartment was conveniently located to the subway - only a few blocks walk to the nearest subway station. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to friends/family.

There are plenty of other people who have already said great things about this apartment and Elito who manages it for the owner, and its all totally true, so I'll give some other tips instead. NY City operates a city wide bicycle use system called Citibike

The bikes cost $12 for one day or $24 for 3 days and if you want more time than that, join up via the website and its cheaper. The system works really well if you use it right and that means a bit of planing ahead. You only get 30 minutes with your bike before you have to re-dock it at a stand and wait 2 minutes before getting it, or another bike out (most stands have up to 50 bikes). Unless you really gun it, you probably won't have enough time on one hire to leave the stand closest to the apartment and get to the next stand across Brooklyn, Manhattan or Williamsburg bridges, so you need to find a stand close to the Brooklyn side of the bridge to swap over. The free Citibike app is perfect for that. The whole idea is you grab a bike, swap as many times as it takes to get to your destination (e.g. Ground Zero) and then you leave the bike at a stand while you spend your time in the area. When you are ready to move on, go to the closest stand, re-insert your credit card to verify who you are, and it spits of a code that you use to unlock your bike and off you go. You don't need bike locks, or helmets. Getting up to the apex of the 3 bridges is easy enough even if you are very unfit, but it will probably take you 10 minutes of slow 1st gear grind (or walking your bike) to get there. (FYI, Brooklyn bridge is the prettiest and easiest to get over on a bike although you do have to carry it up a short set of stairs on the Brooklyn side). You can easily and safely ride throughout Manhatten but I'd avoid riding through Central Park with Citibikes. There are no Citibike stands inside the park, and with the 30 minutes max time limit you'll waste your time hunting for a stand instead of enjoying the park. Walk Central Park (in sections) instead, using a Citibike to get you to each section from outside the park. If you want to go through Manhatten, in quick time then get over to the West side (alongside Hudson river) and you'll find a cycle/ walking path that goes all the way.

Beautiful apartment, neighborhood not what we expected

  • 4 of 5

Our family traveled to NYC and stayed in Elito's brownstone apartment. Elito was great about answering questions and accommodating a few changes that popped up in our travel plans. He was always very prompt and helpful with his responses, which we really appreciated. When we arrived in Brooklyn, we found the apartment inside to be exactly as it was pictured on VRBO. It had everything we needed and then some. Here is a quick summary of our overall thoughts.

First, what we liked--The apartment is beautiful. It's in an old brownstone, which is very charming and has a nice mix of old-time charm with modern updates. It's immaculately clean, the beds and pillows are comfortable, and the towels are plush! We also loved that you get a lot of space, compared to many apartments in NYC proper. It was a really hot week when we visited, and we found that the 3 window units in the apartment kept all of the rooms sufficiently cool. Elito left a case of water bottles in the refrigerator, too, which we also found really nice. We all grabbed one each morning on our walk to the subway.

What we didn't like as much—The trip into Manhattan was a bit long, although we knew this when we booked. With the walk and subway ride, it probably took us about 40-45 minutes to get into lower Manhattan (or back home) at peak times. We recommend stopping to grab a coffee and pastry on the way! Not being familiar with Brooklyn, we hoped this area would have more restaurants and cafes. There also were times when we were unsure of how safe the area was for tourists. I would describe it as more of an "up and coming" area, unlike some other areas of Brooklyn that are more bustling and popular. Although we found a good restaurant close and a couple of good coffee shops, we found ourselves traveling 15+ minutes to Williamsburg, DUMBO, or the downtown Brooklyn area to eat when we weren’t in Manhattan. Finally, we didn't love the really loud party Saturday night that kept us up until nearly 5am. Even the hum of 3 air conditioners didn't drown out all the noise!

In summary, this apartment is spacious, comfortable, clean, and overall very nice--if its location was different, I would stay again in a heartbeat. The neighborhood fell short of our expectations, and in hindsight, we would have preferred to stay closer to the city, since that was our main destination for this trip.

a pleasant stay and a great value

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in mid July. This proved to be a great value and well deserving of the high reviews. It suited our purposes being very clean and comfortable. Elito the property manager is extremely nice and accommodating. The 5 of us slept comfortably. Everything in the place was new and everything worked. There is a grocery store at the corner so you can stock the kitchen and make it like home. It's relatively close to 2 subway lines, about a 15 minute walk to the C, and about a 10 minute walk to the E, and from there about a 30 minute ride, straight shot, either to the heart of town one way, or to JFK the other way. We felt safe walking there, and it felt like it would be a pleasant neighborhood to live in, away from the noise and crowds of Manhattan but close enough to get there easily and quickly by subway.

Nice apartment, not the best location

  • 3 of 5

Our family stayed in this apartment in early July. It is pretty much as shown in the photos of the inside of the apartment. Elito was also good to deal with.

Unfortunately, while there are some lovely tree lined streets in Brooklyn, this apartment is not on one of them and the block it's on is quite grungy. The shops and restaurants in the immediate vicinity are also grungy., although there are some more hip and updated cafes etc about 10-15 mins walk away.

The apartment was clean, obviously recently renovated and beds were quite comfortable. Block out curtains are needed in the bedrooms as the current blinds don't do much to keep out the light. It's also quite noisy if any of the neighbours have people over, music on or a party as happened when we were staying there.

It's also worth mentioning that the nearest subway station is a 8 or so minute walk away.

So, all up, it's a nice apartment, but it's worth understanding what it looks like from the outside, it's specific location and what amenities are close by.

Owner's Response: We thank your family for booking and staying with us from July 1-4 and appreciate your subjective review of our wonderful neighborhood. We've had countless families that stayed in our apartment and explored our neighborhood and had experiences that are vastly different from yours. You arrived at the apartment on July 1 early evening the weekend we celebrate 4th of July and there were a lot of households on the block and in the neighborhood celebrating with parties and barbecues over this weekend so of course the neighborhood was a little noisy. You departed the morning of July 4th, so you really didn't get the opportunity to explore the neighborhood the way past guests have. In all fairness, spending only 2 days in the neighborhood shouldn't allow you to paint it as "grungy". Of the 81 combined reviews for the 4 apartments past guest has stayed in this is the only review painting this neighborhood in this way. Best of luck to your family. Thanks again for staying with us.
