Nicely designed third floor apartment with high ceilings, located in a beautiful former 1800's Bank Building from the Victorian era, overlooking a park and the historical Smithfield Market. The apartment has a bright private living room with lots of light, a kitchen area, a double bedroom and a bathroom with shower.

The building has a lift directly to the apartment, making it much easier for families with children, luggage or those with limited mobility (3 steps from the street level).

The location also boasts the fine dining and cafe culture of Smithfield and Clerkenwell on its doorstep with traditional pubs, Michelin-starred restaurants, many cafes and great options for family or late night dining. It is a perfect location for enjoying London, with all the famous landmarks very nearby. Museum of London and the original Roman city walls are 4 minutes walk away, St. Pauls Cathedral just 600 meters. A short walk further brings you across the Millenium footbridge over the Thames to the Tate Modern Museum and attractions near London Bridge and Tower Bridge.

For transport, it is 3 minute walk to both Barbican (180 m) and Farringdon Underground Stations (3 min), very close to St Paul's station and has direct links to Luton, Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow airports.

Culture and Attractions: You will enjoy the many cultural attractions nearby, including Barbican Center for Theatre, Art and Dance - Europe's largest multi-arts venue and home to the London Symphony Orchestra is a 3 minute walk (300 meters); British Museum, Portrait Gallery, and many other venues within minutes. The location is ideal for quick access to the trendy Hoxton and Shoreditch areas [we live there - great area on weekends - ask us for the best new spots to go out]

Great apartment but noisy location

  • 3 of 5

The apartment is great. Met Mok the night we arrived and he was helpful and attentive. The apartment is a 5 minute walk from St. Paul's Cathedral and near a number of coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants. The challenge is that it is also right across the street from Smithfield Market which is active until the wee wee hours of the morning. And when I say active, I mean noisy...earplugs a must.

The communication with Rolf and Mom was excellent and they left a great set of instructions for accessing the apartment, etc. The 3 stars is only due to the noise Sunday - Thursday from Smithfield Market (It is closed Friday and Saturday)...the flat itself is a 5.

Owner's Response: Glad you liked the flat and location ! Indeed the market is busy and fun to see a few days each week; we were just in the process of getting a new window fitted for the summertime airconditioning, hence the extra sound on the market days. With that new glass in place it will be great. Hope to host you again sometime ! Rolf

Convenient Location, Great Value!

  • 5 of 5

This flat is centrally located in London and is within walking distance of many of the major tourist attractions throughout London (we walked a loop from the flat to Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Globe Theatre and back to the flat over a day quite enjoyably).

In addition, the flat is very conveniently located close to 3 London Underground Stations (St. Pauls - 7 minutes, Farringdon - 5 minutes, Barbican - 3 minutes). I recommend during the week to use Barbican, it seemed to us a little less congested versus the others.

There are numerous restaurants, pubs and a grocery store all within less than a 5 minute walk as well. I would caution that since this area is predominantly commercial, I noticed many of the restaurants cater to a business crowd so quite a few of them were closed (or closed early) on Saturday & Sunday.

You are immediately across the street from Smithfield Market which is a massive, wholesale butcher market (which you can visit - go before 8 AM, it's really interesting). As a result, trucks are constantly loading/unloading from about 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM on the street below, but the windows are pretty well insulated and the noise isn't too bad.

Our group consisted of 2 adults and 3 teenage children, and the flat layout was perfect for our family.

Communication with the owner was exceptionally thorough, the explanation of the facilities, transportation, etc. was one of the most thorough I've ever received from a VRBO owner!

I would definitely recommend this flat for a family or small group of adults. With a lift in the apartment, it would also be very suitable for older guests as well.

In talking with other tourists I met on our travels, I concluded that this area is probably one of the most convenient in London for tourists. Not touristy, but very convenient to all of those attractions. You see a bit more of "real" London this way.

I would not hesitate to rent this flat again!

Good, clean, well located flat

  • 4 of 5

Advance communication from the owners was excellent providing all possible information one could need. We arrived 2hours earlier than expected and that was also no problem. The apartment is exactly as described & pictured and accommodated 2 adults and 3 children well. All essentials were supplied including plenty of towels. Very unusually in my experience, there are even international electrical adaptors for 220V devices. There was no sound to be heard or any other kind of disturbance from Smithfield meat market which is active all night across the road nor from the bars downstairs. The location is a few minutes walk from cafes and restaurants for breakfast and other meals and transport links for every sight that London has to offer. There is a small supermarket 5 minutes walk away and several more within 10minutes walk. I would recommend this flat.

A good place to stay for a family of four

  • 4 of 5

The best thing about this apartment is the location. It is easy to get there from Gatwick airport with the Thameslink train to Farringdon station, and it is close to several Underground stations. There are many restaurants and places to visit (like St.Paul’s catedral) nearby. The second best thing about the apartment is that it is very clean and tidy, not all holiday apartments are. The kitchen however is more a kitchenette than a kitchen, with very little cutlery, and is placed in a corner of the livingroom/second bedroom. It is worth noting that the apartment we rented is not the one that is photographed in the advert. It is similar, but the furniture and wall colourings are different, and the bathroom less luxurious. The single bed in the livingroom/second bedroom is not the beautiful daybed pictured in the advert, but a homemade (?) bed that would not have been comfortable for an adult. I suppose the owners have more than one apartment and uses the same advert for them all. We never met neither Mok nor Rolf, but they seemed relaxed about everything, and in the end we left the rent for them to collect while we were out. All in all a good place to stay for a few days for two teenagers with parents!

Car: not necessary

Excellent family and Michelin-starred restaurants, very old pubs, cafe's, late-night dining plus a perfect starting place to see London. Very easy access to transport with direct train to several airports, three underground stations within minutes, walking to major sights.
