Jungle Roost, a beautifully appointed 4 story tree house near the beach

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2½ bathrooms, sleeps 6 + double air bed if required

Imagine being 4 levels up, nestled in Costa Rica’s spectacular, pristine canopy. Welcome to Jungle Roost! Enjoy your morning coffee on the wraparound deck watching monkeys foraging and making their way across the treetops.

This 2,500 ft2 home has 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms, and is fully and comfortably furnished. It has floor to ceiling windows with unobstructed views designed to bring the outside into the open and welcoming interior. The architectural design of this unique home includes numerous sliding glass doors that open to allow breezes through all 3 floors and bedrooms. Sliding screens and ceiling fans keep A/C use to a minimum.

The ground level has ample parking for your SUV, a laundry room equipped with washer and dryer, and a surf board should you be so inclined. The main level includes a spacious great room, fully-equipped kitchen with breakfast bar/island, deck surrounding the living area, and two piece bathroom.

Walk up one level to the expansive master bedroom with queen size bed, sliding doors to the wraparound deck, and massive windows for unobstructed views of the canopy wildlife. This level also has a full bathroom with a glass block, walk-in shower.

Walk up another level to the fourth floor where there are two lovely bedrooms with queen size beds, a full bathroom with a glass block, walk-in shower. Both bedrooms have floor to ceiling sliding glass doors on two walls providing access to the wraparound deck where there is a large outdoor chesterfield for quiet reading or naps. Don’t be surprised if a monkey (or 10!) sneaks past. Stay still and they will just amble by looking to jump from the balcony to the nearest tree. You will be tempted to feed them but please refrain – there is plenty of healthy food in the jungle.

The nearby beach is gorgeous and quiet. If you are in the mood for more people, funky bars, good restaurants, surf schools, groceries parasailing and fun shopping, just stroll 15 or 20 minutes along the white sand to Manuel Antonio.

Great week in the middle of the rainforest!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week at jungle roost and cannot say enough good things about it. It's location is fantastic. You are just a kilometer down the road from several restaurants and shops, so it could not be more convenient. In the other direction, there is a great beach that is far less crowded than many others we have been to in Costa Rica. Down at the bottom of the hill, there is a nice gentleman who will watch your car as well as rent you beach chairs. We found him to be reliable and helpful.

The house itself is very well put together. It is a tall three stories with lots of outside living space that put you right in the middle of the jungle. Literally every morning, troops of monkeys will travel through the area. There is a sloth that lives in a tree right next to the driveway. There's really not much of a need to go anywhere to see the wildlife. It will all come right to you.

The house is simple, clean, and well appointed. Everything was functional and in good working order. We cooked only a couple of times, but found everything we needed there. Ellie, the concierge and property manager, could not of been more helpful. She gave us many fantastic tips. She helped us in booking a few excursions as well too. We strongly recommend the waterfall tour and the rainmaker tour and in taking her advice in general.

For about $50 a night more than a good hotel room in town, you get to have this entire house to yourself. We did laundry and came home with clean clothes. We were able to relax at our house and enjoy the evening whatever we wanted to.

Our only advice would be to make sure your phone and mapping apps work and to follow them explicitly. We got lost when leaving San Jose coming to the house. Ellie gave us good advice, and were able to find our way back just fine. Also, if you were new to this part of the world, you cannot put on too much sunscreen. We applied every hour on the hour, and still got a little burnt.

One final thought, this would be an excellent first stop for a family that is new to using VRBO or those new to traveling to Costa Rica. Everything is accessible and there are many modern conveniences when a couple minutes from the house. The English language skills of the locals in the area is typically quite good and we survived just fine with tourist Spanish.

In summary, excellent property an excellent experience!

Paradise in Manuel Antonio

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for opening your Manuel Antonio home to our group. We had an excellent time! Your home is as described - a beautiful jungle cottage with all the amenities - Walking distance to the beach, to great restaurants, minisuper, bank, and a very short drive/taxi to activities such as hiking in the park, surfing or going out at night. We found your home clean and very comfortable with a great jungle vibe. We were especially impressed with your young garden project - it would be great to see it in the future as it begins to grow out!. Ellie was an excellent host and made sure we were well acquainted with the local area. The monkeys were very inquisitive and fun to watch. We all had pictures taken of a turn on the swing! We spent a lot of time on the pool deck just chillin'.

For families with young children or those who find stairs a challenge the open stairways might pose a concern, although there is a pullout and washroom with shower on the main floor.

An excellent vacation experience! Merci Heather and Ellie!

Unforgettable birthday trip

  • 5 of 5

We all agreed this was the nicest house we have rented. We came to CR to celebrate my daughters 16th birthday, she wanted to see monkeys and Jungle Roost did not disappoint. The house had everything you could ask for on vacation, including spectacular views. The pool was delightful, we walked to the beautiful almost private beach each day, were visited by lots of birds, all three types on monkeys in the area and sloths. The house is beautifully decorated and very comfortable for our family of 4. Ellie the property manager was so helpful in making recommendations for our excursions and booking them for us so all we had to do was wait to be picked up. All our our excursions were exactly what we wanted and we felt comfortable knowing we were in good hands. Heather, the owner was there upon our arrival and gave us numerous tips during our stay.the house is easily walkable to great restaurants. Would recommend this property to anyone wishing to visit the area.

If you could choose the most perfectly placed home in Manuel Antonio...

  • 5 of 5

Our family and friends of 6 could not imagine a better place to stay in the M.A. Area. Easy access to a more private beach, walking distance to fantastic eats and drinks while still feeling secluded in a national park-like setting. Considering the daily visits by Capuchin, Titi, and Howler monkeys, one could argue the need to even visit the park! It is still worth it of course and we did see 6 different sloths that we didn't see at Jungle Roost.

Heather has a very nice home here and we're appreciative that she's willing to share it so families like ours can have the experience. Eli, our caretaker, is equally fantastic and a great asset to have for this house and made our stay awesome. Do not miss Fred's Place, the Planet Dolphin Catamaran Tour, the "private-ish" beach close by and Emilio's for ancillary entertainment. But that said, we spent a full day at the house and had a blast just hanging with the monos while swimming in the pool and swinging on the one-of-a-kind swing.

We plan to return soon. Pure Vida!

Most wonderful house imaginable

  • 5 of 5

Our party was three adult couples and Jungle Roost was everything we’d dared to hope it would be - and much, much more! The house is set into a hillside, surrounded by flowering shrubs, lipstick palms and magnificent trees. Looking out over the valley you feel you’re as far away from civilization as you can get. Birds flit through the trees, howler monkeys call out, iguanas sun on the garden path and it is so peaceful. But if you walk back up the driveway to the little road, you’re only a ten minute walk from a marvelous beach (great breakers, exciting bodysurfing), or, going the other way, to a well-supplied mini mart and several very pleasant restaurants with good food/drinks and spectacular views. The house is stunning in an understated way. Not “over-decorated” at all. All living space is oriented to bring the views to you. The kitchen is nicely-stocked. We cooked at home most nights (there’s a good grill), eating by candlelight under the poolside gazebo. The pool is heavenly. It gets plenty of sun but always has some shade depending on the time of day. The kitchen blender did a great job making fresh pina coladas (coconuts and pineapple from the farmers market) to keep us cool and happy as we lounged around. Can’t say enough about how well-appointed and tasteful this house is. It is open and airy and feels like one with nature - just ask the capuchin monkeys, who came for a visit every afternoon! Highly recommend the horseback ride up to Nauyaca Falls (even if, like some of us, you’ve never been on a horse in your life); also souvenir shopping and lunches in Quepos; visiting the weekend farmers market; and driving over to the surf town ofJaco for the day). Having a rental car was nice and we listed the rest of our party as extra drivers so we all could share it. Our landlady Heather was such a pleasure to deal with during the booking process – always prompt to reply, with thorough, detailed responses and all kinds of helpful suggestions. She made it so easy. Plus the house’s delightful local “concierge”, Elizabeth, who met us on arrival to welcome and orient us, was always just a quick text away to book a tour or to give us her personal favorite restaurant suggestions. It made everything about our visit so pleasant and stress-free. Can’t recommend this house enough and everyone in our party agrees –Jungle Roost is one-in-a-million. Heather, thank you for sharing your lovely home and your magical corner of Costa Rica with us. We will be back!

Even Better in Person

  • 5 of 5

Family of 4 just returned from a week at the Jungle Roost & cannot say enough good things. The pictures (of the exterior) don't do this place justice. The gardens seem to be an ongoing project and thus the grounds are even more beautiful than pictured, and the outdoor furniture has been upgraded and added to. You seriously cannot imagine a better outdoor area - so many little nooks and crannies to explore and enjoy as well as large gathering areas. And yes, all the animals pictured are there and plentiful and the salt water pool is wonderful. Another pleasant surprise was the beach accessibility. It is very close down a dirt road, easy to drive to and park at (or I'd imagine a somewhat challenging walk due to terrain & heat). You are on the far north end of the main public beach, which is the quiet end. Even on a weekend in high season, it was very pleasant (and I'm pretty crowd averse), and midweek it was heavenly! Also, the surf at this point was gentle enough for our children to enjoy. You are also very close to some good restaurants (shout out to Fred's Place - my kids' favorite), a small grocery, bank & pharmacy - it's all just up the road and yet the house feels remarkably isolated, due to the terrain and lush flora. Finally, Heather & her manager Ellie were very kind and willing to help with any arrangements or recommendations you may need. In closing, the only "negative" to be aware of is the place is definitely NOT toddler friendly (open railings with big drops indoors & out). My youngest is 7 and he was fine, but much younger and I'd be pretty nervous. Overall, we just loved this place!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. So often guests promise to write a review once they return home but busy lives take over resulting in fewer reviews than hoped for. Your review is much appreciated. My wonderful property manager/concierge Elizabeth and I were delighted to help you. You will be please to know that Marcelo (handy-man extraordinaire) will be installing additional railings this week to make Jungle Roost more toddler friendly. You have also spurred me on to update my photos so that more of the property can be seen. They should be posted by mid-may. Wishing you all the best, Heather Soame (owner)
