Boot Lake is approximately 110 acres with depths up to 30-40 feet. It is a quiet lake where the homeowners prefer the use of boats with electric trolling motors or small gas motors. Fish in the lake include Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Walleye, Blue Gill, Sunfish, Rock Bass, and Perch.
Joe and Robin live in the lower peninsula in a smaller community close to the Ann Arbor area. We have 2 children and 2 labs that we bring to Boot Lake along with family and friends. It is our wonderfully relaxing 'home away from home' where many activities are enjoyed including fishing, hunting, walking and swimming along the Lake Superior shoreline and beaches, enjoying waterfalls, hikes, bike-riding, canoeing, and all of the special attractions that the town of Munising and the Pictured Rocks National Park provide. At the property we fish off the dock, enjoy campfires and dinners at the picnic table in the summer. During the winter we love to see the freshly fallen snow on the pine bows while looking out at the lake and curling up to read a book or to enjoy family conversations by the fireplace.
Robin purchased this house in 2003
Joe has a rustic cabin located nearby along the Driggs River. Although it is a Men's paradise and it is beautiful, it does not have electricity and other common amenities that we wanted to enjoy during family vacations. For several years while our children were little, we rented cabins along Lake Superior in Grand Marais and also west of Munising in the Autrain area. We realized that the central location of Munising is what felt most like home to us. We started looking for a cottage or cabin, but when we stumbled upon this very unique home we decided to make it our own. It has been the source of wonderful traditions and experiences for our family as well as many of our guests.
Dancing Bear Lodge on Boot Lake is a very unique, custom built home and we are proud to be the third owners of this special property built in 1980. The original owners designed and built the home with him being a custom builder and her being a highschool art teacher. You will enjoy many of the artistic elements in the design as well as the planning that maximized all views of the lake. For historic considerations, the stone foundation lamp-posts that welcome guests to Dancing Bear Lodge were originally located at the entry of the old Munising Walter Mather Highschool. When it closed in 1979 to make way for the current highschool which is located on Lake Superior, the lamp-posts were gifted to the original owner. We named our vacation property the Dancing Bear Lodge on Boot Lake based on the current interior decor which includes elements of the dancing bears made famous by the 19th Century Artist, William Holbrook Beard.
Wonderful big house with a terrific overview of Boot Lake. Boot lake is a super quiet peaceful lake w out a bunch of boat engine noise. The house was very clean, full kitchen utensils etc.
We had a great stay: visited Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks in our own boat and had an overall great visit. Recommend to all.
This property was an absolute joy to stay at. Everything was perfect!
Very peaceful and comfortable with all the amenities we needed. The only small criticism was that there was only one shower but that didn't really affect our enjoyment at all.
Had a wonderful time staying at Dancing Bear Lodge on Boot Lake and would not hesitate to stay there again. The house was very clean, well maintained, comfortable and very much as described . . . . no surprises upon arrival. And I loved the fact that although there are neighboring homes in the area, you cannot see them from the house so it feels very private. And no road noise/traffic sounds reach the property due to it's location at the end of a cul-de-sac.
Beautiful lake and forest views can be seen from most of the house and there is an amazing set of stairs leading down to the dock. Took the canoe out one day and just paddled around; I wish there had been more time to spend on the lake and just enjoying the house as it has a lot of interesting features. We also spent time walking the Lakehead Trail at Pictured Rocks from Mosquito Beach (so aptly name!) to Chapel Beach along Pictured Rocks one day and bicycling from Boot Lake into Shingleton and back the next. (I would never try this where I live but in the UP it's possible to bicycle on most main roads with peril)
Not having used VRBO or a similar site before, I wasn't sure what to expect and I'm still pinching myself as to how smoothly everything went. But it wasn't random luck; Robin was very thorough, detailed and easy to talk to and that helped put me at ease.
Thank you Robin for opening your home to us and making us feel welcome. We had a great time and loved the house.

We stayed here with my friends for long weekend. This was a very wonderful home. Robin was very helpful from start to finish. Kids and adults all loved this home very much. There were many things to do around and we all wished we could have stayed one more day.
During our stay we could not locate the water heater switch and Robin was very responsive and helpful with us when we called her at around 10:30pm. She even called us back that night to make sure everything is fine.
Robin made the whole process very easy on us, even the refund of the security deposit was easy.
If we visit this location again, we would definitely stay here
Thanks again, Robin!
Every winter my family and my friend's family (4 adults and 6 kids) spend New Years in a rental house in the U.P. Dancing Bear Lodge was one of the best, and a place we would return to. Very comfortable, clean and modern. Well-furnished and organized. Plenty of room for ten. Robin was very responsive, flexible and easy to work with. There is plenty to do in Munising, we went cross-country skiing, tubing, and toured the Eben ice caves (awesome!). Great trip!
