Perfect secluded oasis

This property is a little off the beaten path but well worth it. The condo is just lovely. The hosts couldn't be more accommodating. Makana Kai feels like a tropical paradise with the birds and frogs singing all night. A great lanai with a view of the ocean. Total peace and quiet. We loved being close to the Red Road where we could snorkel in the Kapaho tide pools and swim in naturally heated lava pools. There are some great places to eat in Pahoa. And the trip to Volcano and Hilo was an easy one.

Weeks before we were to arrive, we received several helpful e-mails from the owner welcoming us and giving us various bits of useful information. The rental was small, but extremely well arranged and the decor was perfect for a tropical house. We stayed here for 2 full weeks and enjoyed every minute. If we should ever return to Hawaii, we definitely want to stay here again!

Pahoa is the closest village but Hilo a little further away has everything you would want in a city.

Peaceful Romantic Getaway

Book Makana Kai if you like peace and quiet and don't mind being off the beaten (tourist) path. My wife and I spend 8 wonderful, relaxing nights here in February, 2015. The night we arrived, the moon hadn't risen and I could not believe all the stars that could be seen in the night sky! The apartment is handsomely decorated, everything seemed fresh and new. A split level, with kitchen/dining on lower level, and remainder on upper. However, the design of the entry, with a few steps up to the first level, leaves only a few more steps to the main level, so it's very user friendly when on the lani and needing to retrieve something from the fridge. You can see the beautiful blue ocean from the lani, and at night the lullaby of the waves will sooth you to sleep. The apartment is neat, clean, well decorated, and roomier than you might imagine. The open loft sitting area looks down into the kitchen windows, and adds to the overall charm of this unique studio. The bath is modern with granite and tile. Hosts Gary and Karen are very gracious and were willing to do their best to make our stay comfortable. About 20 to 30 minutes South of Hilo (depending on traffic), it's a perfect location from which to launch into a scenic tour of the island. Although the ocean is just a block away, you will have to drive a few miles to find a sandy beach. Our first day we drove South on Old Gov't. Road, through some breathtaking old growth forrest (jungle?) towards Kapoho tide pools, then a little further to the warm pond, where we spent a relaxing day in the lava heated water. This is the place to stay if you just want to just relax and listen to song birds, or it's a perfect location for a base from which to explore the island.

A Stay in Paradise

Thank you Gary for providing us a beautiful retreat in a beautiful location. The house was elegant, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable.

The bathroom was luxurious with granite countertops and was very spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable and the whole unit was clean and tidy.

Our favorite part was the porch that overlooked the water. We enjoyed our Kona coffee while watching all the beautiful birds eating their breakfast from the bird feeder right in front of the porch. Thank you again for a wonderful stay!

Amazing time away

My wife and I stayed at this property for two weeks, everything was as advertised and more. We appreciated how much attention was given to the little things in making us feel right at home. Great customer service, we both could not say enough about our stay. The one suggestion we would make would be a bigger flat pannel TV, while we were not watching TV much, a bigger TV would be a nice upgrade for the place. Beatuiful views, quiet space, walking distance from the ocean a short drive from a jungle like environment, all within your fingertips.

Delightful, clean, welcoming, comfortable, airy

Very well-tended, imaginatively laid-out split-level studio apartment, with high ceilings, and louvered windows to provide an airy ambience. (It is necessary to climb stairs.) No detail overlooked in the furnishings. The bed was so comfy, it was hard to get up in the morning! Hosted by a welcoming, perceptive couple, generous with their presence when wanted, and also all the privacy one could desire. The owner was easy to contact. It was simple to make the the reservation, and pay for it. They provided treats for breakfast, and coffee and tea. The property description sells it a little short, as there are whimsical decorations to enjoy. The lanai with the birdfeeder nearby brought literally hundreds of city birds into close view. I was there for just a few days, and there was rain, but it was easy to access outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, and walking nearby, and many indoor activities are available in Hilo, a half-hour away, during rain. I especially enjoyed the Imiloa Astronomy and Hawaiian culture center, the Kapoho tide pools, and MacKenzie Park. I highly recommend Makana Kai for those who need a quiet retreat during their vacation, with a view of the ocean nearby. I even loved the rain, as did the coqui frogs! I would stay again! Again, the hosts are really lovely people.
