Now, please read on to learn more about our house!

Oceanfront? Yes, and exactly as it should be — with million-dollar views! Savor your morning coffee in a rocking chair on the upper deck —just steps from the kitchen — while you watch the kids play in the surf or the dolphins frolic in the waves. Go back out at dusk to enjoy the sunset and gentle evening breezes as you have supper around the picnic table, then watch the moon rise as you linger over dessert.

In between, after you've had enough sun and surf and fishing for the day, enjoy the private hot and cold outdoor shower. Then, grab a one of the great beach books from our extensive library and hang the hammock on the lower, shaded deck.

If rain showers blow through, take that book upstairs and curl up on one of the daybeds in the Crow's Nest, or just enjoy the oceanfront view that goes on forever. Or, if you're feeling more active, push back the three love seats that cluster around the big-screen TV and turn on our yoga DVD for your own private yoga class.

At night, stroll out your own private walkway to the dune deck and practice identifying the constellations (there's a great app for your iPhone or iPad to help you). Or, walk just 8/10 of a mile down the beach to Bogue Inlet Pier and see what fish are biting. Or, push back the furniture like we do, and play some dance tunes through the iPod dock or by using one of the DVD players for your CDs. For a quieter time, enjoy our selection of puzzles and board games.

We have five cable TVs, two DVD players, some of our favorite old videos for the VCR, and, of course, clock radios in every bedroom. The big-screen TV also has Netflix and Amazon Prime on-demand video streaming. You should have no problem hooking up your own Wii or Xbox to the TVs!

If you have trouble living completely on 'island time,' or if you absolutely must bring work along, there is broadband Wi-Fi throughout the house.

The kitchen is fully equipped (including Jenn-Air range, microwave, toaster, toaster-oven, coffee maker, blender, slow cooker, ice maker, a shrimp steamer, lots of specialty cookware and good kitchen knives that are sharpened between each rental). The inside dining tables seat twelve, in addition to the four stools at the breakfast bar, and we provide an ample number of table settings in case guests drop in.

There are four two-person bedrooms (two of them with king beds and two with queens — two are oceanfront, and two have nice ocean views). Each bedroom has its own full bath en suite and direct access to an oceanfront deck. The large Crow's Nest has four more single beds, and accesses one of the en suite bathrooms (one floor down) directly through a separate door, without having to go through the attached bedroom. There is also a queen sleep sofa in the living room.

Our duplex will sleep up to 12 on a side, with 4 of them (often kids) being in the Crow's Nest. But some folks prefer not to sleep people in the Crows' Nest at all, because they love its great views and like to use it as a refuge as the kids run in and out downstairs; others enjoy it as a dedicated media room to watch movies or the big game on the big screen. In fact, our low rates and great views have enticed many couples to rent the house for a getaway just for the two of them!

You can even double your bedrooms and bathrooms! If you need more room, remember that this is a duplex. Subject to availability, we can offer the other, mirror-image side for you to rent as well (and sometimes at a discount). While completely private and well soundproofed, the two units can communicate through otherwise-locked passage doors on the two decks, as well as through the rain-protected carport on the ground entry level. We enjoy renting both sides to host large families, weddings, company retreats, yoga and writing workshops, and groups of home-schoolers on field trips. However, if you do want to rent one side or both for a special event, please provide us details in your initial inquiry so we can be sure that your plans and parking needs are a good fit for the house and neighborhood.

We welcome children of all ages. You'll find a couple of baby gates that you can position at the top and bottom of stairs. We do encourage you to sleep babies and toddlers in their parents' room, both for their safety and for their sense of security in a strange house. Because of sanitary and safety concerns, we don't offer cribs or high chairs, but we can help you rent up-to-date ones if you don't travel with them. Do bring your own outlet covers if you want them, as it is impracticable for us to guarantee that outlet covers remain in place in a vacation rental from week to week.

'I'm bored!' Well, if the beach and the surf and books and TVs and puzzles and games aren't enough for your kids, let them ride their bikes and skateboards on our quiet cul-de-sac or along the miles of paved pedestrian/bike paths in Emerald Isle. They'll also find a basketball goal in the cul-de-sac, and, within easy walking distance are two miniature golf courses, a go-kart track (well out of earshot!), an arcade, and ice cream shops.

For the whole family, there are many other services and activities within easy walking distance: Bogue Inlet Pier, the grocery store, the ABC store, a coffee shop, a hardware store with fishing supplies and beach equipment, restaurants, a movie theater, surf shops, and numerous specialty stores. Extensive paved bike/walk paths make exploring more distant shops, services and scenery a breeze. Other adventures await you a short drive away: boat & kayak rentals, charter fishing, historic Swansboro and Beaufort, the NC Aquarium, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Cedar Point Park, Hammocks Beach State Park, Fort Macon State Park, cruises to Cape Lookout and dolphin-watch cruises. And don't forget the wonderful walk along the beach to Bogue Inlet at the western end of the island.

We can occasionally allow up to two small, short-haired, crate-trained dogs (in most cases only under 20 pounds), but only with special permission and a nonrefundable pet fee of $175 per dog. We love dogs, but please understand that we must be picky because we need to be confident that we can quickly turn the house around in pristine shape for our next renters. Tell us about your dog – weight, breed, age, length of fur, on year-round flea and tick preventative, crate-trained? – and request that we send you the special provision in our rental agreement regarding pets. We really cannot allow any pets other than approved dogs – no cats or other species!

There is Absolutely No Smoking in the House! We do provide urns for the disposal of cigarette butt outside, and ask that you use them – not just because butts on the ground are unsightly, but because the beach grasses and high coastal winds can quickly fan a hot cigarette into a blaze threatening many houses.

While we prefer weekly rentals (usually Sunday-to-Sunday), we will at times consider renting for shorter periods with a nightly rate that is 1/5 to 1/4 of the weekly rate; because of the high demand for our house on a weekly basis, these shorter periods are typically available only for mid-November through mid-March, and only 10 days or less in advance. About Austin Lybrand

I'm a native North Carolinian who grew up spending two weeks at the beach every summer with my extended family: mom and dad, my sister, grandma and grandpa, and assorted aunts, uncles and cousins. Those vacations were glorious, marked by huge family dinners (often featuring the fish that dad and granddad had caught that very day) and by hours riding an inflatable raft in the surf. I've tried to recreate that feeling in Emerald Isle for my own family, and for yours. We take pride in lovingly maintaining – and continually updating – a house that we, and you, will want to return to again and again.

A lawyer by training, I'm a traveler by calling and a flying trapeze artist by passion. I've lived in four countries and traveled in many more. Always, everywhere, I'm on the lookout for a place to ride the waves that were so important to my childhood – whether in a huge wave pool on the shores of the Danube in Vienna or in the frigid waters of the North Sea. In exotic places or back home in Emerald Isle with my boogie board, I'm twelve years old again. Come to the beach and play!

Why Austin Lybrand chose Coastal North Carolina

When I returned to the States in the early 1990's after a diplomatic posting to South America, I began looking at beach houses within a few hours drive of my permanent residence in central North Carolina, in an area that had ample services but was not overbuilt. I visited scores of oceanfront houses, but none of them sang to me. Finally, I found a lovely vacant lot on a quiet cul-de-sac in Emerald Isle, and I set about designing a house that would incorporate the best features of what I had seen during my search.

What makes this house unique

We truly enjoy being able to walk and bike everywhere; we can easily park our car in the carport and not use it for two weeks. And, since we are always doing maintenance to keep the house fresh for you, we have come to love the smell of acrylic paint and caulk mixed with the salt air as we enjoy the ocean view from the top of a ladder!

There are five cable TVs, including one big screen with Netflix and Amazon Prime video streaming, two DVD players (one with Blu-ray), one videocassette player and an iPod dock. There are clock-radios in all bedrooms. There are six ceiling fans. A full complement of rental bed linens and bath and kitchen towels is included in the quoted rate for weekly rentals, but you can save $100 per week if you bring your own. Quoted rates for multi-week and nightly rentals do not include bed linens or towels, but we can arrange rental of linens and towels for you at market prices. You may rent specialty baby and beach items directly from our local vendor online with a credit card, and even save some money on linens and towels if you will not be occupying all bedrooms. The cost of departure cleaning is included in the quoted rates for weekly and multi-week rentals; for nightly rentals, add $110 per stay to the total nightly rate.

Great beach house - fantastic beach

The description of the beach house given was very accurate. The house is kept in excellent condition and the owner is very helpful and accommodating supplying us with wonderful information to make our stay comfortable. The house has 4 floors and the private walkway down to the beach is another big set of stairs. This was not a problem for us, but if you do not manage stairs well it could be a problem. The outside stairs are slippery when wet, so be careful! Our only somewhat negative experience was no fault of the owners, but I will mention it. This is a duplex, and the outside decks do have a privacy "wall" between them; however, the people next to us were smokers and there were a few times when they were on their deck smoking when we were on our deck trying to enjoy the evening. Since no one in our party smoked, the smell was unpleasant (we were downwind). That being said, when we were inside, we never heard any noise from the adjoining unit. A linen service is provided and there were definitely adequate bed sheets and bath towels, but only 2 kitchen towels and dishcloths. We are a little picky about bed sheets and next time I will bring my own for added comfort. Neither of these things (smokers or thin sheets) were fault of the owner. The house is wonderful, set on a cul-de-sac with magnificent views. I would definitely recommend it.

Owner's Response: We greatly appreciate this gracious review. But, we were so sorry to learn from it that these delightful renters encountered these issues. It really would not have been an imposition to ask us to help resolve them. We could have offered immediate solutions (arranging additional linens and reminding the offending smokers about the clear provisions of their rental agreement). We encourage all our renters, first in the written materials we provide and again when we meet them upon arrival, to let us know if anything needs attention – and to do so immediately, rather than as or after they depart. It is our hope that all our future renters will feel fully comfortable asking for our help if any issues arise during their stays!

Outstanding beach home!

As all others have said in one way or another, this is truly a great home!! We spent the week with our three adult children and grandchildren, and even had other extended family members for day visits.

As another reviewer said: "The house was just as advertised. We really appreciated the attention to detail that Margaret and Austin provided with all of the helpful instructions left around the house. This left no question on how to run something or where to find something. It was a wonderful experience!"

Our three grandchildren especially loved the crow's nest!! It became their "secret hide-away - adults not allowed!" So much fun.

And the home is so close to many shops and places for entertainment. But while we were in the home, it all seemed so far away.

Many thanks to Austin and Margaret for all their efforts before, during, and after our stay. Looking forward to next year - already booked!

Relaxing Vacation at Great Beach Location in Very Comfortable Oceanfront Duplex

There is not too much that has not already been said, but we want to add our 5 star rating to the others! We thoroughly enjoyed staying here, even in the off-season. And yes, the kitchen is as good as the other reviewers have said. It seems like every time we needed something, we turned around and there it was. For example where else will you find a rental that has a crock pot, two pizza pans, a blender, good knives, large casserole dishes, ...etc. etc.

Austin and Margaret take such good care of this place and as a result tend to have guests that also take good care of it. It is so nice that everything is clean!

One restaurant we particularly enjoyed in EI is Caribsea. It is somewhat hidden away. We particularly enjoyed the scallops and crab cakes there. And it is quite reasonably priced for the very high quality food. They have at least 3 real chefs there.

Another place we had never heard of is Aurora Fossil Museum. We took a day and had a great time digging for and finding fossilized sharks teeth, coral, whale bone, and shells. We also particularly enjoyed the aquarium and Fort Macon. Swansboro is a lovely little town with many good restaurants.

Clean, spacious, great view, accessible location

Well-maintained property right on the beach. Our group included 4 adults, 5 children between ages 7 and 18, and a dog. Well stocked kitchen, loved having the space to spread out, great views and beach access right there. The weather was perfect. The owners provide clear instructions for your stay on the property and answer questions quickly. The kitchen was the best stocked rental property kitchen we have ever experienced. We occupied one side and never heard the neighbors who occupied the other side - and their party was large like ours! Within walking distance to grocery stores, many shops, a movie theater, restaurants. Nicely priced for the space, amenities, and season. We took several day trips out to see the area: Harker's Island, Shackleford Banks, Hammocks Beach, New Bern, Ft. Macon, the NC Aquarium. There is plenty to see and do in this area, most within a 30-60 minute drive or ferry ride.

Lovely Retreat

We had a relaxing, peaceful retreat here in Islandia East.

The house was just as advertised. We really appreciated the attention to detail that Margaret and Austin provided with all of the helpful instructions left around the house. This left no question on how to run something or where to find something. It was a wonderful experience!

Food Lion, bike rentals, and shopping center are a short walk away. We also made much use of the culture de sac for playing frisbee and riding bikes with the kids.

Couple of minor downers...

Our dog is old, so the many stairs were tough for him.

It was also a little inconvenient to get to the beach since the only exits from the house to the beach stairway are either through bedrooms on the 2nd floor or all the way down to the carport and around the house. That was unexpected but manageable.

All in all, it was a good stay. I will consider coming back again!

Islandia East - Just what we were looking for

Our family spent a wonderful vacation at Islandia East the week of August 7. It was a pleasure meeting Austin upon our arrival. Austin and Margaret have kept their home well cared for, well maintained and very clean. Our family consisted of 3 couples and 3 young children. Every couple having their own en suite bedroom/bathroom was a huge plus after coming up from the beach at the end of the day. Getting ready for dinner, whether staying in or going out, took little time when you didn't have to wait your turn. Islandia's kitchen is well appointed - everything we needed to prepare meals and more than enough dinnerware and flatware to accommodate our family. We had asked about a large crockpot prior to our stay and Austin brought one from his home for us to use - something he didn't need to do but he went the extra mile. Islandia has a lot of stairs inside the house and down to the beach so if you're not in shape, keep that in mind. The view from the upper deck and the crow's nest is great. The beautiful beach is not far away from the the last step. It was not crowded - we had plenty of space for two umbrellas, six beach chairs, cabana and canopy. Waves were great - not a lot of undertow - and you can walk out quite far. The best place to go shelling is down at The Point. We drove down to The Point about 8:30 one morning and after an hour, had plenty of shells to bring home as a memory of our vacation. The convenience of a close grocery store, hardware store and beach/souvenir shops is also a plus. We would definitely rent from Austin and Margaret again. They were fast to respond to email questions and had plenty of directions/instructions in Islandia.

Our oceanfront house is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood a short walk from the Food Lion supermarket, a coffee shop, ice cream shops, movie theater, restaurants, surf shops, Bogue Inlet Pier, the liquor store, a hardware store with fishing supplies, beach shops, miniature golf courses, water slide, a go-kart track (well out of earshot!) and arcade. Golf carts for tooling about the island may be rented nearby.

Extensive paved bike/walk paths make exploring slightly more distant shops, services and scenery a breeze. Other adventures await you a short drive away: Emerald Isle Woods Park, boat and kayak rentals, deep-sea charter-boat and guided fishing, the historic ports of Swansboro, Morehead City and Beaufort, the wild ponies of Shackleford Banks, day cruises to Cape Lookout and dolphin cruises, the NC Aquarium, Cedar Point Park, Hammock's Beach State Park, Fort Macon State Park and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. And, don't forget the wonderful walk along the beach from our house to Bogue Inlet at the western end of our island.

Swimming, boogie boarding, surf fishing (and your own fish-cleaning station!) are just steps away down your own private walkway to the beach!

Inquire about adding linens pkg for nightly rentals. 2018 Snowbirds' Roost rate (which is w/o linens and before $110 cleaning charge) drops to $1,540/2wk, $1,760/3wk, $1,990/4 wk (not/mo). $175/dog/week for up to 2 approved dogs (<20#). Reserve right to decline rentals of < 1 week. Tax varies with rounding. Surcharge of 2.6%+$7 for each MasterCard/Visa payment made through owner; note HomeAway's additional service charge before choosing to pay via "HomeAway Payments."
