|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Villa is located between Sosua & Cabarette, 500 meters from ocean down a paved road. Villa de la Mariposa is our personal residence in the Dominican Republic. It was a tough decision to offer our home for vacation rentals. In doing so, we may request references prior to your arrival. You notice that the calendar is full since we live here 5 or 6 months every year and intend to make Villa de la Mariposa available on a limited basis when we are in the US. Our home is on the north coast between Sosua and Cabarete, located adjacent to Sea Horse Ranch and Sosua Ocean Village.
By this being our residence, many items found in a home are present here. We wanted to have the comforts of home so we probably purchased items not usually found in a rental house. If you need something that is not present, please make sure that Jose is made aware of it and possibly could purchase it for your use prior to your departure.
Staff at Villa de la Mariposa: Our friends manage and take care of our property. We have known Jose for over 8 years and he has been our driver, our manager, but most of all our friend. He will take care of any problems that arise when we are gone. Nelly, and her son Gary, are also more than employees, and also are willing to handle anything you may need while visiting our home. We have know them for more than 6 or 7 years.
Jose is available to show you the area, knows the best restaurants, and has people available to fix any problems that may occur. Nelly will come to the house on the week days to straighten up, light cleaning, laundry services, and possible short errands you may require. Gary will clean the pool and rake the leaves Monday through Saturday. Both Nelly and Gary will finish their duties by 1 PM, but would stay longer if needed. I pay them for being there to assist, but tips for good housekeeping services are not unusual in the DR. I am sure when you leave, they will be your friends as well.
Electronics And Other Amenties: The house is equipped with HIGH SPEED (30+ Mbps) wireless internet on the top floor with a repeater on the second level. This gives coverage to most of the house, but oftentimes in the DR, it is slower than in the US. The small printer is available (HP Office Jet 5525) for use as well. Upon check-in, Jose or Nelly will give you the WEP password so you can access the router with your laptop or IPad. We have security cameras outside and in the main living area (not bedrooms, etc. of course) but these could be disable during your stay, if desired. The kitchen is fully equipped with gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, blender, microwave, etc. We have a small safe to keep your passports, money, jewelry, etc. during your stay. Ceiling fans through out the house and on the porches with A/C in all 3 bedrooms, as well. Over 100 channels are available on the 4 TVs (Each of the 3 bedrooms has a flat screen TV, as well as the 42' located in the Great Room)- including CNN, ESPN, and even Fox News for our conservative guests). A DVD player, Ipod player are also available for use.
Tips for the DR: Driving is different here due to the many 'motorconchos' (motorbikes used as a taxi). Jose is a taxi driver and will be able to help you on any excursion. His rates are the same at other taxis here and he is a good driver (unlike some I have experienced). If you do not use Jose, always confirm the price before getting into the car. Try to find someone who speaks your language as well. If you choose to rent a car, be sure to pay a little extra for the insurance coverage since your credit card or home coverage may not be available. I have rented on a few occasions and never had any problem.
I have never had a problem using my MasterCard here. I try to limit the use of it due to fees back home. I always convert my dollars to pesos (Jose will do this for you - at no charge) for restaurants, etc. and use my card when buying groceries at the supermarket. Never had any problems. I do not use ATMs due to excessive fees. Checks generally will not be accepted so bring some cash when you come.
I retired in 2008 after selling my half of the family business to my brother. I had decided to spend more time in the DR, having formed a partnership with friends from North Carolina to purchase real estate (condos, villas and commercial property in Sosua/Cabarete). I now live here about 5 or 6 months each year, in 6 week intervals. This is my personal residence in the DR and not one of my rental properties; therefore, many items and electronics not usually found in a rental property are a part of my home. Villa de la Mariposa also has limited rental availability due to my many visits to the area. I strive to update the calendar on a regular basis so available dates are readily visible but final confirmation must be obtained prior to booking flights. Enjoy the house, the pool, the weather, the food, but most importantly, meet my wonderful staff (Jose, Nelly and Gary (Nelly's son) who are actually they are my friends who take care of my home when I am in the states) and who will make your visit as wonderful as possible.
Sam Twiford purchased this villa in 2011
Professional Grade High Speed WiFi installed with 30+ Mbps.
The winter has arrived back home but the warm breeze is on the balcony, a Presidente beer in your hand, Magic Jack phone to call your broker in the US or Canada, all the while I am checking, the markets from around the world.... is this really work??? Yes, and you deserve it all!
This is such a beautiful private house with a quiet neighborhood. I went with two other friends and had a excellent stay. House had plenty of room and privacy. We rented a car during out stay which I would recommend. The market and nightlife entertainment is only a 5 minute drive away. The beach you can literally walk to and even that is very quiet clean and secluded place to relax. I encourage anyone and everyone to stay at Sam's house if possible. He is a great host and very easy to contact. I would 100 percent visit again in the near future.
This place is well ran, private and yes just amazing.
Jose picked me up from the airport on time and took
me to the supermercado immediately. I did not rent a car
so Jose took me everywhere and then some. he took me
to this adorable restaurant that sat right on the water. Nelly
is an angel and can cook just about anything you want. She
refilled my phone minutes and was on call if I needed anything.
The villa itself is clean, beautiful and quite private/relaxing. No problems whatsoever. The owner checked in from time to time and I found him
to be quite pleasant. I have no complaints about my vacation. I'll be back
for more R&R very soon. I must mention my full body polish and massage
along with my manicure/pedicure all done in the villa by an on call spa
specialist. The prices were down to earth. I recommend this in-villa spa
treatment to all. You have to ask Jose about her. Loved my stay!!!!!
We went with our large family (7 people) and we truly enjoyed ourselves. The property is vey well maintained and the pool really was enjoyed by all of us. I say that the villa lived up to our overall expectations. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars was that we did have issues on and off with the electricity and Internet for a three days. That could have put an damper on things but the property manager was on top of the issues, kept us updated on the status, and eventually got it working. I think we were also very much impressed with Nelly. Her cooking was typical Dominican cuisine and was a she really big hit with everyone. Rather than going out to a restaurant for meal, we had the convenience of having her cook whichever meals we needed (breakfast, lunch, dinner or all three if needed). She was very friendly and made out stay so much more enjoyable. Sam, the owner, was a very awesome host and we even Skyped with him as he "greeted" us the first day we arrived (Nice touch and we appreciate your thoughtfulness when it came to our anniversary! ). The beach was just a 5-10 minutes walk down the road but I would say it really is more for romantic walks, sunbathing, or wind surfing rather than swimming as the waves are really rough at times. The nice thing about the beach is that it is a great place to take pictures. There are awesome views and backgrounds. For swimming, the best bet is to go to the Sosua beach down the road (a short 10 minute drive). You are relatively close to the center of town where there are all types of businesses including a supermarket that was very much like what you find in the States.
I really liked the villa and would consider going back whether if it was with the kids or just my wife and I.
The description of this beautiful house is very accurate, but in my opinion, understated. This house was extremely clean, beds were very comfortable, A/C was perfect (I'm American, so I definitely used them). The ONLY downside was the 5 minute drive to the house is very bumpy, but that is not the owner's fault, and it's not that big of a deal when you see ALL that you are getting. Nelly was amazing and a lifesaver. She cooked (of course we gave her about 5 dollars per meal per person) and she cleaned and gave us tips on the city (we tipped her for everything). The taxi driver, Jose was very nice, but in my opinion a little expensive, but well worth the pick up and drop off at the airport because he has a very nice air conditioned van. But once we got there, we figured out other means of transportation, which was a lot cheaper. The owner, Sam, is amazing and helpful and very easily reachable. The dog, Sadie, is amazing! She is so well behaved, just be nice to her, she is a rescue dog and she deserves kindness. I would recommend this home to anyone that wants to be comfortable and explore the city. It is about 15 minutes from Sosua (awesome bars/discos) with lots of locals, so this was my favorite place, and the beach is calm and the water is clear. It is about 20 minutes from Cabarete (too many tourists for me), the beach has a lot more waves and is famous for windsurfing, so it's fun to watch, but the water isn't as pretty as Sosua... my own personal opinion. I cannot say enough nice things about this awesome house and the staff... super clean, super comfortable. And Sam will help answer any of your questions and if he doesn't know the answer, he will find out for you. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did! And don't forget to tip, tip, tip... That's what thay live on, and your service will be that much better!
From the moment we landed in Puerto Plata we knew that is was going to be a great vacation. The weather was sunny and beautiful the whole time. Sam's home was UNBELIEVABLE! The landscaping was gorgeous and the pool, OH MY GOSH, the pool was perfect temperature. The staff, Jose, Nelly and Gary were very wonderful. Jose took us anywhere we needed to go. Instead of going through or booking any tours, Jose as in "Jose Tours" can do it all, on your own time. Jose took us to Blue Lagoon Dudu, Playa Diamante, Playa Grande (where we had lunch on the beach) and 27 Charcos (27 Waterfalls). Definitely recommend this, and Jose speaks Spanish and English! Nelly is a wonderful cook. Definitely let her make homemade Dominican dinners and tasty breakfast for you. Nelly speaks very little English, so its fun to utilize your spanish skills with her. Her son Gary lives on the first floor (there are 3), he keeps himself scarce so you can have privacy. He is very nice and only speaks Spanish. There is a beautiful private beach, Playa Laguna, just a few minutes of walking down the street from the house. There are a few grocery stores not to far from the house. And we did our shopping for souvenirs in Puerto Plata (better prices there, than Sosua). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you stay at Sam's place. The home is in a safe neighborhood and couldn't of stayed in a more gorgeous home. Thank you Sam for letting us stay in your home. Next time we vacation there, were bringing some family or friends. Just to show them what they are missing out on. Thanks for the memories!
We arrived from the Santo Domingo Airport and on Thursday night and stayed in Boca Chica. The next day we rented a car from Avis in the airport, and drove the 4 hours to get to the house. If you choose to do this it's much cheaper but make sure that you don't miss the right after the toll booth it sneaks up on you if your not carefully paying attention. Once we were on that rode it was fairly easy to get to the home. Jose met us at the gas station up the rode from the home and showed us how to get there. Upon arrival we met with the house cleaner and her son the pool guy. They were extremely friendly and we were shocked with how beautiful the home was. It was absolutely breathtaking and Sam (the owner) has literally thought of everything you will need on vacation. It was a home away from home! Included movies, coffee pot, fresh water, cell phone, etc. The neighborhood was as beautiful as the house and the security were friendly and helpful as well. Nelly (cleaning lady) made us breakfast and offered to make us lunch and dinner as long as groceries were provided. She was a doll and cleaned the house daily for us. Her son was also very helpful and made himself scarce, so we still felt like we had privacy even though he lived on the 1st floor. The house was everything that we wanted and will definitely be going back and renting again very soon! This is the best way to vacation if you are looking for privacy and home luxuries that you would not find in a hotel or all inclusive. It is so much more worth it to rent this place! We had the time of our lives and everywhere we went we felt safe and didn't worry, even though we had our own transportation and were new to the island. I would recommend this home and area to anyone! Cabarete reminded us of Miami beach at night time and Sousa was perfect for snorkeling. As well as el encuentro that was amazing for surfing! We give the home, area, and staff 5 stars hands down!!!! Sam (the owner) was very helpful and nice. We couldn't have as for a better trip and like I said we will definitely be booking again soon.
Our home, Villa de la Mariposa, which is located in Playa Laguna(between Sosua and Cabarete), is just a short 15 minute drive from the airport, 10 minutes from Sosua, and 15 minutes from Cabarete. Restaurants, bars, casinos, beaches, supermarkets, and shopping are located in each town. Cabarete is known as the kite surfing capital of the world, with snorkeling, diving, fishing and simply sunbathing available in either town. At night, the discos in Sosua begin the festive music and the streets are crowded with visitors. Playa Laguna is a quiet neighborhood located between the exclusive homes in Sea Horse Ranch and the beautiful project with amenities known as Sosua Ocean Village to the west. A state of the art gym and work out facility, an exceptional restaurant, and a waterpark are all part of Sosua Ocean Village. A hospital has opened within the few years serving visitors, as well as locals, in Sosua. Not a rental property, our home is a family home 6 months of the year.
Other Activities: Excursions to waterfalls, zip lining, horseback riding and 4 wheelers are also readily available. The 4 wheelers will take you into the 'back country'
Golf: Playa Dorado is the closest course and has a full 18 hole golf course within 30 minutes of the villa. It is an 18 hole course that offers caddies, rental clubs, and necessary equipment for rent. The course is lush and somewhat challenging. The Dominican Republic is noted for beautiful, lush green courses and this one is no exception.
About an hour and half drive to the east, the course referred to as the 'Pebble Beach of the Carribean', by some golf magazines, is located. Playa Grande is a course you need to take a camera with you when you play (also plenty of extra balls) since several holes are located along the ocean.
This is an exceptional Robert Trent Jones Sr. Course and many golfers will enjoy the challenge of a championship course in one of the most beautiful settings in the Caribbean, if not the world.
Below is an excerpt from the website:
“Sprawling over 370 acres of picturesque coastline, the world-class Playa Grande Golf Course, designed by celebrated architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., is known as “the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean” by the golf community.
With 10 holes playing directly on the ocean, this 7,085-yard course winds along the coastline, providing amazingly open vistas, cliff-side fairways, and sloping greens.”
Wherever you choose to play, the courses are beautiful and lush. The Caribbean breezes, a cold beer, and great stories are waiting to be shared.
