Since moving to the Old Town of Funchal we fell in love with this beautiful part of Madeira. We live here because it is the ideal combination of sun, old fashioned charm, tropical gardens and sea. Our villas each have their unique character, with the luxury of space - a sense of history and offering the best Madeira has to offer. We have assembled a collection of fabulous seaside villas in the old town that are run as successful self-catering properties. Alongside this business, we launched the award winning publishing company, Funchal-Publications in 2005 that has several travel books on the Island. This complement of books, history & local knowledge is something we like to pass on to our guests, and makes each holiday experience special.
Cristina Abreu purchased this villa in 2008
Seaside location near the Old Town of Funchal. The tropical garden is an oasis in the center of town with a swimming pool surrounded by tropical plants. The sea and beach is a short walk away. We Love the climate here which is warm year round as it has a nice micro-climate. Very friendly neighborhood, un-spoilt & charming. The villa itself is a very beautiful buidling, over a hundred years old with stunning period features that have all been lovingly restored and modernised to make your stay not only very stylish but also comfortable. Watching the boats pass just in front is a dream and looking at the port of Funchal so close is a source of constant joy. We try to use local artisans and craftsmen everytime we can, so you can see the artwork, beautiful handmade wicker furniture and TLC that is given to each property and also helps the local community.
Beautiful traditional villa with huge sevaiew terraces on each floor all looking to the sea, fantastic sea and harbor views. Very spacious rooms, decorated with style and nice features, you get the luxury of space in the best location in all Madeira and Funchal. Near the sea and old town, yet with the benefit of the sea views and a pool. Enjoy outdoor living and cooking on the barbecue year round, sip a drink as the Queen Mary Cruise ship passes just in front, its Madeira but its the nicest Madeira.
This was our fourth stay at Ocean View and not our last. We have stayed in all the apartments in Villa Juvenal and some of the other properties let by Cristina Abreu and Ocean View is one of our favourites. The first and lasting impression is of the fabulous view of Funchal, the harbour and all the marine activity. Then there is the light! All the rooms are bright and very tastefully furnished. The bed linen and the mattresses are just what you need for a good night's sleep. Even in deepest winter the day is 2 hours longer than in UK and the weather is nearly always better than the BBC forecast! Sunsets are fabulous and dining on the terrace is superb. If the weather is especially good, then a dip in the pool after a hot hike up the hill is wonderful, followed by a barbecue with all the kit thoughtfully provided by Cristina. For those who want to keep in touch the Wi-Fi is good and the TV has a reasonable selection of channels in English.
Walking into town is easy and interesting, whichever route you take. The seafront has now recovered from the disaster of 2010 with new parks and the waterfront activity is improving all the time. If you like music, take a light lunch at the Ritz and listen to some of the best live guitar in the world. If you like fine dining try the Restaurante do Forte a few minutes away or Goya in the Lido area. For the odd football or rugby match you just can't miss then try the Prince Albert Pub. If you want a classical concert, get down to the beautiful theatre next to the Ritz. For more rustic and hearty dining there are many great restaurants all over the island but our favourite is Abrigo do Pastor, half way up the mountain.
You don't need a car but renting one opens the scope of what you can see or do, including taking yourself to the start of levada walks. The servicing company is run by Cecilia and Alan Lewington, who will gladly fix a rental to be delivered to your door at your convenience. They will also fix transfers and are very responsive if you have any problems. Cristina is unique in my experience by the way she takes so much care with decoration and listens and acts upon any suggestion you make for improvements and to make it a better experience for her customers. We are expecting fresh decoration and other improvements when we return in the new year.Discounts are not unknown for regular guests and doing business with Cristina is a delight. You can see wh
We had a truly fabulous family holiday staying in Ocean View and Bay View both of which are equally gorgeous. The initial booking process was extremely efficient and quick and Cristina replied to all my emails promptly. The villa itself is beautiful and is within walking distance to local supermarket and town so no car needed and also taxis are cheap and in abundance. Cristinas attention to detail is spot on and the apartments are truly gorgeous and comfortable. The views from the balconies are breathtaking and I loved watching the cruise ships manoevering their way in and out of the harbour. Would we go back again?.... Bet your life we would!!!
The apartment was in a fantastic location on the edge of the old town, but it is quite hilly around there, so lots of energising walks and great views.
We liked that location, rather than the hotel area past the marina, as we felt that we were experiencing traditional Funchal as part of the holiday.
There is a small supermarket and nice bars / cafes nearby, but the main shops and supermarkets are only a 15 minute walk or short cab / bus ride away and there are a few bus stops near the apartment.
The apartment is so spacious and comfortable and provides everything you could need. It also has a great balcony to relax on and watch the world and ships go by.
We can't wait to come back to Funchal and this apartment some time soon. We wouldn't want to stop anywhere else.
The apartment is exactly as described and shown in the photos, clean and comfortable and with bags of character. Excellent service from the managers from a smooth pick up at the airport, with lots of tips, to our final lift back to the airport at the end. We were lucky with very warm weather. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and eating in (I have a restricted diet). Local mini market good - very uphill! - and local supermarket in town excellent with a gluten free section. We love Funchal - so colourful, so welcoming. Cafe Opan (several branches) excellent for light snacks and drinks at very reasonable prices. Easy to use public transport, nearby bus stops. Don't miss the cable cars, lovely views. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful.
Rented both Ocean View and Bay View for a wedding anniversary and so happy with our choice! Ocean View has light streaming in from all the rooms, with sea views from all rooms it was like being on a large ship. Very clean house, light colous and elegant decoration much nicer than we´ve had in other self catering rentals. The area is peaceful with pretty quaint houses in the colonial style and a short walk took us to the fish restaurants and bars of the old town. Madeira is a friendly island with so much to do (Bob wanted to walk so he went on a levada tour, the girls went shopping and I booked a big game fishing trip which was a dream I had). We all loved discovering the city on foot, going to a concert in the theatre and of course lounging by the sunny swimming pool and toasting to the cruise ships on our terraces. have already recommended this house to a friend and we hope to return again very soon.
Ocean View lived up to all our expectations and so much more. The apartment is bright and airy with the most wonderful views you will ever find. Overlooking the harbour with the Old Town and the centre of Funchal spreading out below, it is an absolute pleasure to just relax on the balcony and watch the city (and the ships) go by.
The apartment is beautiful, well furnished and feels very much a home from home. High ceilings, comfy sofas, fully equipped kitchen and with added extras such as a dvd player and wifi, the apartment is a joy to stay in. The swimming pool is fantastic and our daughters (aged 8 & 5) spent many happy hours every day swimming and splashing about.
The Old Town has some fantastic restaurants and is only a 5 - 10 minute walk from the apartment. The local bakery (up a steep hill) provided super bread and cakes, and there is a little convenience store next door for all the essentials. The main supermarket in town (opposite the Farmer's Market) stocks absolutely everything and a taxi back to the apartment is less than 5euros.
Funchal is lively and cosmopolitan (but never too much so) and there is loads to see and do. Cafes are great (especially the Golden Gate). If you have children, definitely do the cable car (station located in the Old Town - you can see it from Ocean View's balcony) and visit the water park (back near the airport).
And after a busy day, coming back to Ocean View and its wonderful panorama will always provide a restorative tonic to the most tired traveller.
In terms of logistics, it is a 20 minute car ride from the airport (organised through the agents before we arrived) and the service we received from Cristina and the agents looking after the property was first class from beginning to end.
I can't think of a single negative thing to write. In fact, it was so good, we are going back.
I would heartily recommend Madeira, Funchal and Ocean View in particular!
We had a simply wonderful winter break at the Ocean View, it really made the rest of winter bearable and we have booked a month already for 2014. We had great service throughout, from the airport pick up, to the restaurant tips and advice on walks and how to make the most of the beautiful island. It was like living like a local (without having to know Portuguese) we found everyone so genuinly friendly. It is by far the best location to stay as we could walk everywhere and nip down for some meals in the old town and shop in the local grocer and bread shop. The cleaners came once a week and left everything spick and span, the apartment is very beautiful inside with good fabrics and decor, we had real luxury of space but of course the best feature by far was the drop-dead gorgeous seaviews right in front in the large terrace. It was like staying in a ship, and we did watch dozens of cruises pass right by the villa. The swimming pool is a good extra specially in town and the water temperature (not heated) acceptable. Thanks Cristina..and now that I´ve booked our dates, can highly recommend it!
Located in Funchal city center just by the historic old quarter, a perfect unspoilt seaside location within walking distance of the sea (5-10 min walking down the road). Best location in Madeira, warmest climate where you can live like a local in a charming quiet and peaceful residential area of Funchal, surrounded by traditional houses. Funchal market, shops, museums and cable car are just down the road within walking distance as is the old town with all the best restaurants, bars, market, cable car and shops. Bus stop nearby. Parking is done just outside on the road for free. This part of Funchal is unspoilt and very charming, seaviews are great and you get to watch the ships arrive in the harbor. The community is safe and friendly, the bakery and cafe is famous, there are local grocers with fresf fruits and produce you can cook at home. Enjoy the specially mild climate here down by the sea and treat yourself for a meal in the best restaurants of the old town all within walking distance.
The perfect base to explore the very best of Madeira, while staying in the ideal part of Funchal.
Other Activities you can do while staying here: Levada and mountain Walking, Gardens, boat tours, bird watching, diving, historic cultural tours.
Dont miss the many yearly events that happen in Madeira each year: New Year Fireworks, Carnival, Flower Festival, Easter and half term celebrations, Madeira island golf open, madeira rally and wine festivals are just some of the events you can enjoy.
Golf: Palheiro Golf a 5-10min drive away - you can see it from the house. Santo da Serra golf a 25-30min drive. Both are great golf courses, surrounded by nature and beautiful views.
