About Sue Gustafson

We have had a life-long love affair with Cape Cod and find that time spent there with family and friends is truly restorative.

Sue Gustafson purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Sue Gustafson chose North Eastham

Location, location, location, plus the cottage had good bones even before we did the complete renovation in 2011.

What makes this cottage unique

Blue Skies on the Half Shell is a cottage that's not too big nor too small. Our focus is on providing our guests with soothing colors and comfortable surroundings in which to relax and unwind from everyday life. The cottage is filled with original arts and crafts made by Cape Cod artisans who understand and appreciate the beauty of nature when creating their art. The location of the cottage...mere steps from Campground Beach...allows for leisurely walks at low tide on the tidal flats or a swim in temperate water during high tide. If you prefer swimming in cooler water, the Atlantic Ocean is a 10 minute car ride away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a great cottage in Eastham. This was our second visit. It is a beautiful, clean and comfortable cottage that has everything you need. The beach is a very short walk away. No need to pack up the car and drive back and forth, especially when you have small children. Sue & Lee provide beach toys, wagons, chairs and umbrellas. The outdoor shower and rooftop deck which overlooks the beach are great. If only vacations could last forever!

Time spent on Cape Cod offers a wealth of timeless pleasures. A beautiful sandy hook surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound, the Cape offers the picturesque scenery of endless stretches of dune-fringed sandy beaches, peaceful bays and inlets, pristine marshlands, and charming historic towns and villages -- all in an ideal climate tempered by the Gulf Stream. As one of the country's most treasured resorts, Cape Cod combines its scenic beauty with a wonderful quality of life and a refreshingly relaxed, leisurely ambiance, yet it is in easy reach of the major metropolitan centers of Boston, Providence and New York City.

The New York Times has called Eastham 'Cape Cod's Little Secret.' The town offers visitors a quieter and less crowded environment than some of the more well known areas of the mid-Cape. Eastham offers two ocean beaches: Coast Guard Beach (consistently named one of the nation's Top 10 Beaches by The Travel Channel) and Nauset Light Beach. The red and white Nauset Lighthouse on Nauset Light Beach is said to be the most photographed site on Cape Cod, so don’t forget your camera! The Salt Pond Visitor's Center is the primary information center for visitors to the Cape Cod National Seashore and the starting point for many nature trails and bicycle routes. The National Seashore Visitor’s Center offers daily free educational films and has a wonderful free museum depicting the history of Cape Cod. The former Cape Cod Rail Trail is now a paved bicycle trail. It runs the length of the town and beyond to the north and south while passing by picturesque salt marshes, cranberry bogs and ponds.

A note about Eastham and the surrounding area: Blue Skies on the Half Shell is located next to family-friendly Campground Beach (one of several bay beaches maintained by the town of Eastham). Cape Cod Bay offers the perfect setting for long walks on seemingly endless tidal sand bars, creating a visual memory that is sure to be one of your favorites of your time spent on Cape Cod. See what bits of ocean life you can discover left by the receding tide! The bay water is warm and inviting for a swim right into the fall. The Wellfleet drive-in movie theater (one of few remaining in the U.S.) is only 5 minutes away, and also offers 4 indoor screens. The daytime flea market at the Wellfleet Drive-In parking area is fun for everyone. Wellfleet is also the home of the Audubon Sanctuary which offers some great hiking trails. The area has so many wonderful family activities -- mini golf, numerous beaches, great eats at the many clam shacks and plenty of home made ice cream shops. Try a charter fishing boat excursion out of Rock Harbor in Orleans, whale watching in Provincetown, kayaking through Nauset Marsh in Eastham, or rent a sailboat, stand-up paddleboard or jet ski locally to take out on the Bay. There are endless opportunities for outdoor play activity to those who want to be in or near the water at all times. If you are seeking a temporary break from the sun, check out a tour of the Truro Vineyards and sample their wines, or head down to Hyannis for a tour of the Cape Cod Potato Chip factory (complete with free samples!) Wellfleet has an active theatre community that offers productions during the summer. The eclectic community of Provincetown has many great restaurants, art galleries and shopping opportunities.

Such a wonderful, relaxing stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great week at Blue Skies on the Half Shell! The cottage was as cozy as could be, and we spent many lazy mornings curled up in the comfy living room drinking coffee, or outside on the upper deck, enjoying an ocean view. The beach was a quick few minute walk down an adorable crushed shell path, and we caught a few breathtaking sunset evenings as well! We really enjoyed walks in the surf during the afternoons, and just sitting in the beach chairs watching the sea gulls on what felt like our own little private beach. Lots of great restaurants are nearby, as well as beautiful hikes with views of the Cape's quintessential salt marshes. The owner, Sue, could not have been more accommodating to our little party of three, (including my 89 year old mother who had a marvelous time!) and made our stay absolutely seamless. We'd love to go back sometime and do it all over again!

Lovely cottage in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is totally adorable and we had a wonderful time staying here even though it rained. The upstairs deck is heavenly and everything is beautifully appointed. We loved having a view of/access to the bay. If you stay here, bring your own cutting boards and knives. Otherwise, very well equipped! We would definitely come back and stay here again.

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

We were incredibly pleased to stay at your charming little cottage by the sea. Sitting on the roof deck nestled in the trees watching the birds and the ocean was like a little bit of heaven. The house is so thoughtfully decorated and stocked with everything we needed and more.

Our boys (4 and 7) loved playing in the warm bayside waters, which were literally steps from the house. If only going to the beach were always so easy!

This place is so special--it's truly a gem.

Thanks for sharing it with us!!!

Slice of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Once again we're packing up after a wonderful too-short week at Blue Skies! The weather was absolutely spectacular and we tried our best to take advantage. Walked the beach at Nauset, caught a Cape Cod League game in Brewster, shopped in P'town/Falmouth/Chatham and ate as much clam chowder as we could! It's so great to have this cottage as a home base. The week flew by before we had to head back home to reality. Thanks again for letting us share your little slice of heaven!
