How About a Private House for Less Than a Hotel or Condo? 100 yards to the sand

Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Why pay for a Condo or a Hotel room when you could have an ENTIRE home all to yourselves for far less? (Seriously - If you don't believe me, refer to the 'Notes' just before the Amenities section below). If your tropical dreams include a desire for privacy, a wonderful garden setting, a private rear yard, and a comfort that provides a home away from home, Casa de las Olas (House of the Waves) might just be what you’re looking for. At Casa de las Olas, when you arrive we like to think that you 'Drop In' to Life !!!

This 2 bedroom, 2 bath private home is one the few personal, single-family residences available to the public in Tamarindo. Located midway between Tamarindo and Langosta, Casa de las Olas is tucked away from the bustle of town in a quiet, premier location that’s just 100 yards from the safest swimming beach in the area, and a short two-minute walk from one of the finest restaurants in Tamarindo. 'Town' is a beautiful 10 minute walk down the beach.

Your host recognizes that when you are looking for a vacation rental, you have many choices. In sharing my home with you, my goal is to provide you with a memorable tropical experience, at a cost that’s less than many of the moderate priced hotel rooms or crowded condo complexes.

If you would prefer a private setting, you can begin to understand why this home has become one of the most sought after properties in the Tamarindo area. Whether it’s surfing, fishing, diving, snorkeling, exploring, reading, or just plain old relaxing in the hammocks, let Casa de las Olas be your tropical oasis.

Notes of the true 'Value' of this Property:

After recently returning, I truly began to understand what a GREAT bargain this home is compared to most other properties in the area. I am constantly being told that I'm 'under priced' and that 'the pictures don't do it justice.' I can offer this 'value' to you because I bought this property 30 years ago (long before Tamarindo was 'discovered'). Even though it probably won't work for everyone since it doesn't have a pool, I challenge you to find a better bargain, especially when one considers that the home comes with 2 Surfboards and 2 'Beach Cruiser' style Bicycles; Boogie Boards; Coolers; and other "Toys." And, when I'm in residence (I have a small 'casita' studio above the garage that I stay at occasionally), you even have your own in-house Costa Rica advisor - Wishing you the best in your Holiday planning !!!

PLEASE NOTE: This a very popular property - I am very blessed to have many returning Guests and the house is often times booked solid during the primary season. However, I DO NOT MAINTAIN THE VRBO CALENDAR, so please contact me to check for availability. Thank you.

About The Owner

I'm an old 'Surfrat' who has spent a vast majority of my time traveling the globe looking for waves. I retired in 2009 from the Fire Service. Like everyone, I've had some challenges, but I keep a smile on my face most of the time and laugh at myself fairly often.

The Owner purchased this house in 1988

Why The Owner chose Tamarindo

I purchased this property in 1987, which was long before Tamarindo was 'discovered' - literally, there was nothing there. At the time, if you wanted a quart of milk, you had to travel to Santa Cruz, which is about an hour away. I built the home between 1993 and 2002 (I didn't have pocket fulls of cash). Since I was intimately and directly involved in all phases of the construction and Tamarindo was quite primitive at the time, I had to bring down most of the materials i.e., plumbing, electrical, etc in those 32 and 18 gallon Rubbermaid plastic bins. Even though I have been active in my life, the construction and logistics of building this home was one of the most challenging things I've ever done.

Since I've spent a fair bit of my time (and money) chasing waves in the backyards of the world, I knew that one day I wanted to retire in the Tropics and Tamarindo seemed to be a good place. Although it's changed dramatically over the years (show me a place that hasn't changed in 20 years), overall, it's still a great place to kick back and enjoy life. Besides, when I'm in residence (I have a small 'casita' studio above the garage that I stay at occasionally), I not only stay out of your way, but you even have your own in-house Costa Rica advisor.

What makes this house unique

Overall, probably one of the best 'values' in Tamarindo (especially when you consider having the use of 2 Surfboards and 2 Bicycles that comes with the house). No matter what your preference is, whether it's surfing, or laying in the Hammock, this is the place people continue to return back to.

Casa de las Olas has 2 'Beach Cruiser' style bicycles for the exclusive use of the Guests (bikes rent for about $15 p/ day). Additional amenities include 'boogie boards;' as well as maid service every other day; a private rear yard with a Rancho (round palm-roofed structure) with hammocks and a BBQ area; DVD/VCR; full Linens; and Wi-Fi (Wireless). However, NO SMOKING is allowed. For those of you who would prefer to have an "Experiential" vacation, let us know what you want to do and we can assist you greatly in taking care of those bucket-list items !!!

Tamarindo vacation at Casa de Las Olas

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently stayed at Casa de Las Olas in Tamarindo for 5 days. The owner, Rik, was wonderful to deal with and did everything he could to help make our vacation a success. Many thanks Rik for your great hospitality. This beautiful well maintained house and property has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a full kitchen and dining area and living room area. The two bedrooms are air conditioned but the other rooms are not, but there are lots of fans circulating the air. Outside there is a nice patio with two hammocks and an outdoor shower area which is wonderful after a day on the beach. There is also a patio area and BBQ in the back yard which we didn’t use. This property includes the use of two single speed bikes and 4 boogie boards, which we used a lot, and surf boards. There is also secure parking inside the gated and fenced yard. When booking this property my wife was a little concerned that we weren't directly on the beach. Once we got there we walked across a quiet street and down a 50 yard path and we were on the beach. It was perfect. Casa de Las Olas is located on south end of Tamarindo. It’s an easy 10-15 minute walk into town by beach or road with many restaurants and bars along the way. We had a car which made things a little easier but it isn’t a necessity. We would definitely stay here again. We loved the easy access to the beach, the privacy of our own house compared to a hotel room and we loved being able to have a relaxing breakfast on our patio. After a busy day on the beach and in town it’s nice to come back to a nice peaceful house and relax, pour a drink and lay in the hammock. Thank you Rik for having us as your guests and we wish you and Kata all the best. Pura Vida

Owner's Response: Norm and Lee: First off, it was a delight to have you; to meet your Friends; and, to have a great connection together !!! Our entire Team was not only honored to serve you during your stay but, to receive such a detailed and wonderful review is truly an added bonus. Although a simple "Thank You" expresses some of our Gratitude, a return visit would make us even Happier. Please Join Us Again !!! For those who are interested, please forgive me, but this wonderful review finds myself climbing on a bit of a soapbox - It is reviews such as this that can assist everyone in making the best decision for their hard-earned vacation dollars. Again, our Team works very hard and we are EXTREMELY Grateful to receive (and, perhaps, to earn) such a review. However, as sites like VRBO continue to change and evolve (in my opinion, generally for their benefit not ours) they are extracting more and more of "our" money (both Guests & Owners) and trying to keep it for themselves. Since my philosophy in business has always been to provide a high quality product at a reasonable cost, this extraction of funds make it far more challenging for both of us. As I shared with one VRBO Representative recently, they should change their name to VRBC (Vacation Rentals By Corporate) because, in my opinion, they have made every attempt to disconnect the Owners from the Guests, which was the original intention of the site. Obviously (by these comments), I disagree with that practice in that, personally, I like the connection and, I also like to keep our prices low enough to where we remain one of the best overall values around. (o.k., I'll step off the soap-box now) At Casa de las Olas, as the Owner, my greatest Gift is when Guests have an absolute wonderful experience during their stay with us - although I have no control over what happens outside of our gates and the adventure that Central America provides, our Goal is to make your stay a delight while you're with us. We would love to have you but, I will warn you - it's not uncommon for Casa de las Olas to book up early (especially for the primary Season), so I wouldn't delay too long !!!

An incredible and impressive home

  • 5 of 5

This home exceeded any expectation we had. The pictures can't come close to the space and setting this home has to offer, seriously. We were just a short walking distance to what felt like a secluded beach, which was also close to an very nice boutique hotel that offered a quaint breakfast, dinner, and/or drinks. During our stay we also often found ourselves just as happy spending time on our front area lounging on hammocks, which was private and surrounded by a lush landscape. The owner Rik was extremely helpful during our stay, and we are appreciative for all his information he provided us. We are definitely coming back!

Perfect place to relax on the quiet side of town

  • 5 of 5

Casa de las olas was awesome!! Rik was the perfect host, being there when we needed him. (When we locked ourselves out). The fresh fruit when we arrived was a super nice touch. We were literally across the street from the beach on Playa Tamarindo and next to Playa Langosta, both nice surf spots. We hung out on the front porch in the hammocks enjoying drinks after a day out on the town and on the beach. We will definitely be back! The second week of December was also a great time of year to be in Costa Rica!!

Thank you, Rik, for sharing your home!!!!

Best Place Ever!

  • 5 of 5

All we can say is WOW! We love to travel and have stayed in our share of houses and hotels. Ricks place is by far the best yet! While the ocean is just a short walk the real salt comes from Rick and KaTa they are what we call "salt of the earth people", which in this day and age is so hard to find. The house has everything you would want and is super clean! I can tell you that just laying in the hammock and listening to the birds is so very wonderful. We will for sure be back ---we love the house and Rick and KaTa are the best!

Owner's Response: Wow, Lucky Us !!! As i often say, "We Have the Best Guests" and both Deb and Vince were exceptional additions to the Casa de las Olas Family !!! Truly, it was a pleasure having you. The humorous banter that Vince and I shared reminded me of the hilarious times that I've had in the Fire House. Thank you for being the incredible individuals that you are and Thank You very much for the kind words that you shared regarding Casa de las Olas. Our entire Team tries very hard and it's truly appreciated when those efforts are recognized. Should your travels bring you back to Costa Rica, it would be an honor to have you join the ranks of the many returning Guests that turn into Friends. Be Well, Rik

A Gem steps from the Beach

  • 5 of 5

The details, furnishings and garden show a true labour of Love. Rik has created a real garden of Eden near the Beach with all the toys included. We enjoyed our walks along the Ocean, but there were bicycles and surfboards available, too. Birds, iguanas and monkeys gave us great entertainment as we enjoyed this property and the closeness to the Beach. Kitchen was very well equipped--but as we were on vacation we took advantage of several beachfront restaurants--very good!! Thanks, Rik
