About R. C. Grencik
I'm an old 'Surfrat' who has spent a vast majority of my time traveling the globe looking for waves. I retired in 2009 from the Fire Service. Like everyone, I've had some challenges, but I keep a smile on my face most of the time and laugh at myself fairly often.
R. C. Grencik purchased this House in 1988
Why R. C. Grencik chose Tamarindo
I purchased this property in 1987, which was long before Tamarindo was 'discovered' - literally, there was nothing there. At the time, if you wanted a quart of milk, you had to travel to Santa Cruz, which is about an hour away. I built the home between 1993 and 2002 (I didn't have pocket fulls of cash). Since I was intimately and directly involved in all phases of the construction and Tamarindo was quite primitive at the time, I had to bring down most of the materials i.e., plumbing, electrical, etc in those 32 and 18 gallon Rubbermaid plastic bins. Even though I have been active in my life, the construction and logistics of building this home was one of the most challenging things I've ever done. Since I've spent a fair bit of my time (and money) chasing waves in the backyards of the world, I knew that one day I wanted to retire in the Tropics and Tamarindo seemed to be a good place. Although it's changed dramatically over the years (show me a place that hasn't changed in 20 years), overall, it's still a great place to kick back and enjoy life. Besides, when I'm in residence (I have a small 'casita' studio above the garage that I stay at occasionally), I not only stay out of your way, but you even have your own in-house Costa Rica advisor.
What makes this House unique
Overall, probably one of the best 'values' in Tamarindo (especially when you consider having the use of 2 Surfboards; boogie boards; 2 Bicycles that comes with the house). No matter what your preference is, whether it's surfing, or laying in the Hammock, this is the place people continue to return back to. 'Remember, work less, Surf more'

Casa de las Olas
Wonderful property! We had a great time staying at Casa de las Olas! Rik was there to greet us when we arrived and give us a tour of the house. The house worked great for our family of four. We loved being such a short walk to the beach and enjoyed all of the toys that Rik has available- bikes, boogie boards, surf boards. The house is a short walk into town. The house and property are immaculate! Rik’s staff are obviously detail oriented and it makes for a comfortable retreat.
It was truly a pleasure having You and your wonderful Family and Thank You very much for your kind words and wonderful review.
As You are well aware, shortly after your departure, the entire World was dealing with the Covid-19 crisis and, as a result, your Family was our last Guests prior to the Costa Rican border being closed. Even though the Costa Rican Government has taken some drastic measures, they are to be commended for taking this serious and protecting the Public. Through it all, I haven't seen Tamarindo this quiet in about 30 years.
When the ability for Visitors to experience this beautiful Country returns, it is our hope that they take advantage of staying at our wonderful oasis of Casa de las Olas !!
In the interim, I wish Everyone Exceptional Health; Happiness; and Safety through these very trying times. I am confident that We will not only Survive but, We will Thrive !!
My experience (Will be doing this again)
I stayed during the February time frame and it is about 85 degrees Fahrenheit and a gentle breeze on most days. Rain does not happen much in February. The front patio hammocks are in the shade, which is really nice and should be put to use while you visit in my opinion. The flooring is stone and can be a wee bit slick if you are wet and coming in from a shower.
The property has its own private parking. There are grocery/convenience stores nearby, but walking home with a few bags isn't terribly fun. (There are a few other stores that are less tourist trappy a little further inland in the Villa Real area). There are Golf Cart rentals nearby, which makes a world of difference for the nearby restaurants and grocery trips.
Rik’s place was a perfect space to connect and to enjoy the beach as well as fantastic restaurants and shops. We received recommendations that went above and beyond which made our trip quite memorable. Thank you!
My husband and I were so happy with this place! It had all that we needed for our getaway vacation. Rik is an amazing host! He helped my husband with some beginner tips for surfing and boy did that help. Now my husband is now hooked on surfing! Great waves for beginners. Rik answered so many questions, he has such great knowledge of the area and all his recommendations where spot on. Rik is a great conservationist and we loved talking to him. However, he gave us all the space and privacy we wanted. His gardener and housekeeper were so sweet. The beach is across the street and a very short and easy walk down the path. Great location. I liked that the pace was on the quieter end of the beach. Every morning we took our coffee and walked the beach watching the sunrise. In the evening we would watch the sunset on the beach. This place is a great value and find! For us it checked all the boxes. We feel fortunate to have been able to stay there and get to know Rik. Thank you for having us!
This property is not to be overlooked. Exactly as described in the listing. Rik couldn’t have been a better host. Gave us clear check in instructions, then he showed up a few minutes later. We chatted and he offered us any advise or suggestions we needed. Just a real class guy, laid back loves what he does and is very proud of his Casa de Las Olas, as he should be.
We were two couples, my wife and I and my brother and his wife. They had never been to CR, and were greatly impressed. Literally out the door and to one of the most beautiful beaches in 100 yards. Then you can stroll along the wide beach and stop in at any number of restaurants and bars along the beach. If you’re there on a Friday, the hotel across the street has a beach barbecue in a beautiful setting, with food cooked grilled right there on the beach and Costa Rican entertainment following.
I could go on and on, but just know you can’t find it much better than Rik’s place.
Thank You !!! Thank You !!! Thank You !!!
For not only your kind words regarding Casa de las Olas but, also for being here as our Guest. It was GREAT having you here and getting to know You !!! Your entire crew had a wonderfully fun attitude. Please come again - the entire Team would welcome you at any time.
Be Well and, once again, Thank You !!
Let Casa de las Olas be your base for all of the activities your care to enjoy while visiting beautiful Costa Rica !!! Besides the many attractions that are available in the local areas such as Surfing; Diving; Fishing; sea-shell hunting; SUP'ing; and so on, included in the price of the House are 2 'Soft-Top Surfboards; 2 'Beach Cruiser' style Bicycles; boogie boards; coolers; beach towels; etc. Just with the surfboards and bikes, you're saving approximately $100 each day of your stay if you were to rent these items separately - like the boards and the bikes, all of it is for the exclusive use of the Guests. Of course, there's always the hammocks for those you just want to "chill" from all the Fun you're having !!!
As mentioned, Tamarindo is a very popular "must see" location within Costa Rica. With Casa de las Olas, you get the best of both worlds - due to it's premier location which is in a very personal and quiet neighborhood on the southern portion of the Bay you're only a 10 minute walk to the often times loud and busy nature of the town center.
