About The Owner

We grew up in California and Ohio and fell in love, married and began our family in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Our family home schools so we have the freedom to travel to Kauai throughout the year and we love to get to the island whenever we can. We are avid skiers (our daughter began at 17 months), but enjoy getting away from the snow for a mid-winter break!

The Owner purchased this condo in 1989

Why The Owner chose Kauai

We fell in love with Pali Ke Kua on our first walk down the beach path to the enchanting Hideaways Beach -- it is truly a magical spot and you feel it in your heart the moment you see the amazing Bali Hai come into view. We chose the corner unit because it was the only one at Pali Ke Kua that had spectacular ocean/Bali Hai views and spectacular mountain/waterfall views as well. Counting over 30 waterfalls cascading down the mountain face in the mornings is just breathtaking and when you turn your head you can count as many whales in the ocean during the fall and winter months.

What makes this condo unique

The North Shore of Kauai is what you imagine when you think of 'Hawaii'. It is green, lush, breathtakingly beautiful and the type of place that calls you to return again and again. Our condo captures both the mountain and ocean experience that is unique to the North Shore. Princeville is about 45 minutes from the Lihue, Kauai airport (LIH) and a car rental is a good idea. There are weekly farmer's markets in Hanalei town and Kilauea so you can get some local taste treats to prepare at home. A full market, Foodland, is nearby in the Princeville Shopping Center. We enjoy cooking so our kitchen is equipped with specialty tools that experienced cooks enjoy and novices will enjoy trying. If you choose to stay out of the kitchen altogether, there are restaurants within walking distance or just a few minutes away by car. Postcards is one of our favorite restaurants in Hanalei town. The Princeville library has a large selection of books and DVDS available for loan. It also has a wonderful changing display of Hawaiiana. The Princeville Community Center is located across the street from the library and posts a monthly calendar with everything from yoga to hula lessons. Next to the Community Center is the Princeville Park which is a wonderful place for parents and children alike. The park has a great play structure and climbing wall suitable for older kids and great areas for smaller children as well. The park is adjacent to a large grass field that is perfect for flying kites or playing ball and frisbee. A gazebo with picnic tables is open to all and BBQs are on site. Queen Emma's baths are an easy walk from the condo and they are a spectacular site in the spring and summer months (the waves can be dangerous in the winter months so always be safe and check before hiking there).

Guestbook comments from the manager

This condo was out home base for exploring kauai's North Shore. We loved having all the comforts of home with laundry access, full kitchen and privacy. It was very quiet and perfect for couples with excellent seamless service from Kauai Vacation Rentals,

We loved staying here. Being a corner unit is the best. Could spend the whole day just taking in the views. The completely equipped kitchen made cooking a pleasure & easy! Beautifully decorated, it felt like a home not a rental. We had everything we needed plus the bonus of a library of books. Great walks in the neighborhood & down to the beach. We will definitely choose this particular unit on our next trip.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed your vacation in our "home away from home" and look forward to welcoming you back with Aloha on your next trip to the Garden Isle. As you noted we are just steps from the beach down a private path to one of the best kept secret beaches in Kauai. The beach features some of the best snorkeling on the island as well as wonderful tide pools to explore. The surfing is wonderful, but it breaks over a reef so it is for experienced surfers only. A sandy bottom surf break can be found at adjacent beaches. For those guests who like water (but not the salty kind), there is a recently remodeled pool on site (a picture is included in this listing). The condo has a gourmet kitchen as we like to cook when we are on island. The poki bar at Foodland is a delight and fresh seafood is available daily at the Dolphin Seafood Market in Hanalei. There are weekly farmers markets in Hanalei and Kilauea so you can "eat local" for your entire stay if you desire. There are also numerous restaurants (several within walking distance) for those guests who wish to relax and sample island cuisine as prepared by the locals. The library is stocked with treasures of "island" reads including history books, geography and maps, ships logs, legends and many more that we have collected over the past twenty years. There is a flat screen TV in the unit and wireless capability also. Aloha -- until we meet again!

The view from this condo is amazing. The space however is dated and worn. We were disappointed by two easy to fix conditions: the mattress and the carpeting. Though the whole unit is in need of a face-lift, the carpet should have been replaced a long time ago with hard flooring which is more typical in humid and wet climates. Who knows how old the mattress was? We planned our stay for 13 nights but decided to leave 3 nights early and go to a local resort. The rental company seemed responsive to our concerns but the owners did not. We thought this was an upscale rental contract. Instead, it was a much less experience.

Owner's Response: Aloha -- Thank you for submitting your feedback on our home. We are always disappointed to get a bad review as we try very hard to keep our vacationers comfortable. We do appreciate all renter comments and try to use them to make our home even more enjoyable for the next vacation renter. As noted by the reviewer, our on-island management company is very responsive to renter requests, inquiries and complaints. In this case the renter did not inform the management company of any dissatisfaction until the 10th day of their vacation. That delay was unfortunate. The renter was uncomfortable in the master bed and we could have had a new bed delivered right after their arrival if they had let us know sooner. Although we had not had prior complaints about the bed, we did purchase a new king bed after the renters made a complaint. The renters also asked for a credit for their 10-day stay in our home. We did not feel a credit was justified as they did not inform us of any problem for 10 days. When they did let us know that they had a complaint, we agreed to fix the problem immediately. Our condo is located on the upper level of the condominium complex which contributes to the amazing views noted by the reviewer. We do have hard surfaces in the foyer, kitchen and bathroom areas, but we enjoy sitting on the floor with our children and friends in the living room and bedroom areas. Carpet is much more comfortable than hardwood floors for this purpose. Additionally, a hardwood floor in an upper condo unit is unkind to the owners who live below. The occupants of the lower units hear every upstairs footstep and voice magnified through a hardwood floor. We do ask all vacation renters to observe Hawaiian custom and to remove their shoes when in the condo. We are aware that renters are on vacation and do not always remove their shoes, therefore, we have our carpets cleaned at least twice a year or more frequently if needed. Our Kauai home was remodeled less than five years ago. The pictures on the website accurately depict the home's condition, furnishings, window and floor coverings. We continue to improve the condo based on guest feedback. We appreciate suggestions that we can implement to make future guests more comfortable on their holiday. We are grateful for the many guests who have enjoyed our island home and left their compliments in our guest book. With gratitude to all our guests, The Stone Family

Great fishing

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay. Private path to beach where the fishing is great. Snorkeling nearby also good. And at night the view for sunset is awesome. We watched whales from the balcony. Will definitely come back to this unit!! They also have a new restaurant on the premises which was great for a casual pizza dinner

What a fabulous week. This is our third trip to this particular unit at Pali Ke Kua.

As usual, spectacular. All the comforts of home but of course with the million dollar view. We were so lucky with the weather this hot hot. I'm watching the whales jump as I write this review-right from the breakfast window. Thank you to the owners for sharing their piece of bliss.

As I've mentioned in reviews before, you can't beat this unit because it is a corner unit with a view of both ocean and mountains.

Tip... Do the M, W sunrise yoga class at the Makai golf a few blocks down the street. Mahalo

Mahalo for sharing your home. We had another lovely stay in this fabulous corner unit. I love that the condo has windows on three sides, almost a 360 degree view of ocean and mountains.

Thanks also for the snorkel gear as I hate packing all of those bulky items. We just moved right in!

This location is really the best for all the things we wanted to do....surfing, snorkeling, hiking, walking and eating of course. A few good finds this trip: taco truck at Hanalei(if Pat at the grill), fab Hawaiian taro truck on the way in to Hanalei (best homemade ginger soda), Sushi Girl at the end of the road, Dolphin for fish, and honeycomb at Banana Joes if you're lucky. But best of all, views from this condo at sunset. And the private beach access. Enjoy. Will be back in February. Aloha

PS please sign the guest book and leave any tips ( as we actually got some good ideas from others' comments)

Owner's Response: It is the highest compliment that we could hope to receive to have you come back and choose to stay again in our home. Mahalo for your repeat visit! We also love the mountain and ocean views that are visible throughout the condo. The advantage of our corner unit is that you not only get spectacular views of the ocean (including Bali Hai, waves, whales, sunsets and rainbows), but that you get equally spectacular views of the mountains (including waterfalls, lush greenery and rainbows). Living in Colorado -- home to ski vacationers -- we know how hard it can be to pack and travel with all that "gear" so to make it easier for our guests we have provided snorkel gear, boogie board, pool floats, beach towels etc. The kitchen is fully stocked so that if you choose to cook you can have a 5-star meal on your lanai as the sun sets. If you don't want to be in the kitchen, there are many dining choices on the North Shore -- some within easy walking distance and many just minutes away by car. Many of the islands best activities are within walking distance from the condo. The beach is simply steps away down a private path. Golf, tennis, running and hiking are all within easy walking distance. Horseback riding, kayaking, zip-lining and tubing are a few minutes away by car. You are on vacation -- it is time to relax and not to commute! We have added all new lanai furniture so you can lie down and relax with a book outside or sit and watch the whales as they come spouting by. Our favorite simple pleasure is to be home for sunset as it can be truly breathtaking -- with the occasional green flash! If you do have to work while on-island, we have a wireless connection that allows you to keep in touch with business and family while you are away. We use the wireless to keep track of the surf reports and the tides. You are so right about the guest book! We love to hear what our guests have to say. All of them are so thankful to be on the island. Kauai is such a spiritual and peaceful place that you can't help but feel the "aloha" when you are here. Thank you for coming back to Pali Ke Kua #201. You are part of our island ohana (family) and we welcome you to return again and again to this magical place.

Hawaiian Immersoion with Bali Hai Backdrop: Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and two kids felt as though we had been transported to another era. Staying at this condo is, truly, a dream realized. With the pathway right below to the beach and ocean, the BBQ facilities, your fully equipped home, the has it all. The condo is welcoming, charming, clean, comfortable and lovely. I would recommend it to all my friends and family exept that I want our family to be able to stay again, soon! We couldn't have asked for anything more.
