Welcome to Alfred House, a new, luxurious, and secluded beachfront estate on the north end of world-famous French Leave Beach (formerly Club Med Beach). There are no houses between this house and the mile-long beach of pink sand where a Club Med once stood, the most sought-after beach location on Eleuthera. The ocean is turquoise, shallow, and historically safe, having served Club Med well for many years. Children love this shallow beach. Enjoy thousands of feet of deserted beachfront, extensive ocean views from every major room, and the sound and smell of the ocean from everywhere.
The town of Governors Harbour, the main town on the island, with its restaurants and stores, is a 15 minute walk from the house. French Leave Harbour Village and Sky Beach Club, two resorts with excellent restaurants and oceanfront pools with poolside service, are just a mile away.
Alfred House is a newly constructed, 4000-square-foot, 5-bedroom Colonial style home plus one-bedroom guest cottage (800 square foot), located just 50 feet from the beach. The house was designed and decorated to reflect the laid back feeling of the cabanas at the Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda. Both the upstairs and downstairs of Alfred House have a wall of glass french windows, so as you move through the house, you see the sea at every turn. The house is furnished with distressed Indian teak antiques and custom pieces made of teak, mango, & cherry woods, and black and white photographs of movie icons.
Downstairs, Alfred House features a vast great room that looks out through a wall of glass french doors at the beach and ocean. The open-plan kitchen faces the ocean, and features custom wooden white shelving with Mexican shell encrusted stone counter tops. Appliances are stainless steel. The kitchen island is capped with a ten-foot teak counter with matching teak bar stools.
There are Honduran hardwood floors, cypress cedar ceilings, marble and slate tile, and mini-split air conditioning units. The upstairs features a huge media room overlooking the sea, along with four bedrooms, with a fifth bedroom downstairs. Four of the bedrooms have huge ocean views. The fifth has a hill/sunset view. Three large bedrooms have king beds; the two smaller bedrooms have two twin beds in each. The three king suites have ensuite bathrooms. There is a powder/shower room downstairs. The media room upstairs is huge, another gathering spot, and faces the ocean and shows turquoise water through several french doors.
The upstairs sun deck, with its grand row of honduran mahogany shutters, runs the length of the house (60 ft), with miles of beach and ocean views. It is furnished with comfortable white lounge chairs. Beneath it is a covered terrace, a shady spot for enjoying the sea breeze and the sound of the ocean. The floor of the terrace contains a lovely mosaic of a conch made by a local island artist. Seating for drinks or coffee is available on the ground terrace, where you can see and hear the ocean.
Alfred's guest cottage, called Med Point, is perched right on the edge of the ocean with a huge 1100-square-foot teak wrap-around deck. It is 800 square feet, and has it's own kitchen, in a large great room. The cottage is available for an additional charge (see Rates for details). If you don't require use of the guest cottage, it will be left empty. We will not rent it to anyone else.
Amenities at Alfred House include full AC, a large flat-screen TV with DVD in the media room, high-speed internet with WIFI. The house does not have cable or satellite TV. Light housekeeping of two hours is provided three times per week.
Alfred House is surrounded by over 20 acres of secluded wild nature, full of casuarina trees, coconut palms, giant cacti, sea grape and lettuce, even though we are only a mile or so from town. (See the aerial view). Explore French Leave Beach, and see the ruins of the old Club Med, which was swept away by a hurricane. The grounds and gardens of Alfred House have palms, palmettos, cacti, hibiscus, and oleander. We have a beautiful copper coloured coral garden off the Med Point deck, on which geckos sun themselves, and which has a natural blowhole that spouts water 30 feet on windy days. There is excellent snorkeling right off our property.
WALK 20 MINUTES INTO TOWN, through Club Med Beach, and buy lobster or grouper, freshly caught every day around 2 pm. The local fishermen will clean the fish for you, and provide only lobster tails, if you wish. A CHEF CAN BE ARRANGED FOR NIGHTLY SERVICE. Daily maid service is available for additional charge.
There is a fantastic sandy jogging/walking path, shady in places, in both directions along the beach. The wooden upstairs deck and terrace below are suitably wide for yoga. There is a wide outdoor stairway, so that children can run out into the garden. The outdoor shower faces the ocean and the palm filled garden. The back garden has a vegetable patch, which is available for guest use.
A 20 minute walk across the island from Alfred House will take you to the beautiful 1648 Bar and Grill, where you can enjoy dinner and drinks on the large oceanfront deck. The famous bar/restaurant Tippy's is just two miles away, and you can drive through Club Med beachfront to reach it. A 20 minute walk (or 5 minute drive) in the other direction takes you to Sky Beach Bistro, another great beachfront restaurant and pool bar.
Club Med Solo, Secluded Atlantic Beach Front, suitable as a Work Retreat or Family Reunion Place.
So close to the ocean, that there is instant accessibility for quick swims several times a day.
Your home is beautiful and we loved everything about Eleuthera and our stay at Alfred House. It was the perfect spot to relax and a wonderful place to come home to after our many adventures in and around the island. Your welcome letter and tips were so helpful. My children said Eleuthera is one of their very favorite places we've ever visited (and we travel quite a bit). We all hope we can return one day soon! Many thanks again!
We had a wonderful stay at Alfred House. Matt Simon was a pleasure to work with. From our first conversation he was responsive and very helpful. The staff at the house was very friendly and professional. I almost hesitate to share the accolades of this property and would love to keep it private for us. But Matt, Tara, the owner and the staff were so nice to work with and I feel I should share my comments for them.
The house is well appointed, like a lovely hotel, and is situated on a beautiful beach. We have traveled extensively and rented other homes and this is definitely a 5 star property. Our family consisted of 3 adult couples and one 8 month old baby. We were completely comfortable. The house has nice amenities and is spacious. We loved that there were three areas in the house to gather; the downstairs living room and kitchen, the upstairs media room and the upper deck. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever been on. I would get up every morning for sunrise and walk the beach, it was so picturesque I really recommend doing that.
The people of Eleuthera were very friendly. The house is situated in a very convenient location. We enjoyed dinners at Tippys, 1684 and were regulars at Bacchus Fine Foods. We really enjoyed the Friday Fish Fry in town. However our favorite meal was lobsters that Christine's sister Beulia's husband caught. I boiled them and they were delicious. Definitely try to get them. I ordered basic groceries from the market at Rock Sound and I should have ordered more bread. Ordering ahead of time was very convenient as the local markets may run out of things.
My husband loves to snorkel and there was good snorkeling at the beach and at Twin Coves. The water is calm and the sand is so soft is was perfect for the baby's first beach experience.
It's an easy fun day trip to Harbor Island but just staying at the house is enough to have a fabulous vacation.
My family had a fantastic experience and I definitely recommend this property. We look forward to renting again!
Alfred House was the perfect setting for our family vacation. Two families were able to comfortably spend a week together with plenty of room. The furnishings are very nice with a large and comfy couch and seating area upstairs with a TV for watching movies in the evening. A similarly nice area was downstairs for the adults to relax and read books. The kitchen is well equipped with stainless steel appliances.
The beaches immediately in front of Alfred House were incredible with soft pink sand and places to snorkel or swim right in front of the house. Located in Central Eleuthera, we were able to explore the island without having to spend too much time in the car. Literally a few minutes from Governors Harbor, there were many close options for lunch or dinner. Banks Deli had great sandwiches and cheese with nice beer and wine selections. Baccus Fine Foods is another place to eat or get what you need to prepare a gourmet meal at home; we cooked fish we caught with Paul Petty's son Richard. Dinner at 1648 located at French Leave Resort was a special treat enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
Matt Simon and Tara were a big help with identifying resources and activities which allowed us to plan our week. Caretakers David and Christine Rolle were very nice and helpful as well. Everyone checked in with us and made sure we were happy during our stay which we were. We would stay at Alfred House again.
My family and I have rented homes on Eleuthera on quite a few occasions and Alfred House is without a doubt our favorite. The property has it all; views, privacy, easy access to outstanding beaches and the house is exceptional on all fronts. Matthew and his team at Eleuthera Vacation Rentals provide a seamless, enjoyable experience when booking your stay.
We recently stay at the Alfred House. The house & beaches were beautiful. The Alfred House is very nicely decorated throughout. The house was clean upon our arrival. I was pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen drawers absent of crumbs & grime which unfortunately in other rentals we come across this quite often. Unfortunately rentals are not always kept clean. I was also thrilled we had no incidents with roaches during our stay as that is always a concern of mine---sorry I detest roaches & don't want to have to deal with that during a vacation. The house did have a few maintenance issues to address (door out to BBQ didn't work, front door knob came loose, 2 toilets ran & so the only way to flush was to keep the lid off the entire time and flush that way, roof leak). Christine, the caretaker, was very nice and checked in on us a few times to make sure we were fine. She also sells some nice treats & delivered a dinner she cooked for us one night. The house had beach chairs and umbrellas along with some beach toys and accessories for young ones which was nice to have on the beach since there is no shade to speak of. We used both the beach right out front which was great but we preferred the beach to the right which was a lot calmer and had a cool little reef area to check out. BTW while we were snorkeling one day my husband and I came across a Caribbean reef shark-that was pretty cool.
Couple of Suggestions for Owners:
-leave pen and paper for the guests as we had nothing to make notes or lists with
-perhaps have a few more games and movies (that work) for the guests as there is no cable/satellite service & many of the movies where scratched beyond being able to watch
-provide a working house phone as the one there never worked for us - not sure what the issue was but we couldn't use while it was charging & it always seemed to need to be charged
-leave a list of tips inside the home of when places are closed, when places may start to run out of items etc. The Welcome letter definitely had some good info but it could use a few more good tips
A few recommendations for Guests:
- definitely bring bug spray & be ready with it around 5 pm as the bugs really come out then and they were bad
- bring some games/puzzles etc if you can fit into your luggage (see above)
- Make a trip to the grocery in Rock Sound (The Market). It really was the only one stop shop place that had any real type of selections and the prices were a tad better
It is without hesitation that I highly recommend this property. We are frequent visitors to Eleuthera and love the GH area; much of the island can be quite remote. Alfred House is close to GH yet very private. No detail was overlooked in the construction of the house, and the kitchen is fully equipped. The bathrooms are spacious and finished to high standards. One of the members of our group commented on the lack of a sound system - we brought our own Bose so it wasn't an issue but is something to make note of should you stay at AH.
The home is well-maintained and the grounds are lovely.
We also rented the cottage on the property and enjoyed the added privacy and the cozy feel of the beach house.
The mosquitoes prevented us from eating outside in the evenings, however this is typical of the islands.
The access road is very rough, but again, typical for the area.
There is a new resort that has opened in GH, French Leave resort, which has an excellent restaurant "1648". It is a nice addition to Tippy's which has long been the stand alone for dining in the area.
We wore beach shoes and walked to Tippy's along the incredible French Leave beach - spectacular!
A walk in the opposite direction brings you to Twin Coves beaches which offer calmer waters and better swimming options than the beach directly in front of the house.
Alfred House is truly a beautiful property, thank you for sharing your home with us!
This was our second stay at Alfred House and we have already made our 2016 reservation! If you want elegant, private, beachfront living, Alfred House is where you want to be. The listing is very accurate, but the actual beauty and peacefulness of the setting far exceeds the description. The view of the Atlantic is magnificent from both floors of the house. The beaches "at your front door" are the best on the island.
The caretakers do a wonderful job of maintaining the property and they are available to take care of any need you have at a moment's notice. We had a problem with an air conditioner and it was repaired within 2 hours.
We love the atmosphere of the location. You feel like you are on a deserted island, but all the amenities and restaurants in Governor's Harbor are just minutes away. We especially enjoyed dining at the 1648 restaurant in the new French Leave Resort.
We would recommend Alfred House to anyone who wants a first-class beach experience in Eleuthera.
Alfred House is set on a point between 2 beautiful beaches: Club Med Beach, which is shallow and safe and superb for snorkelling, and boogie boarding, and Casuarina Beach, which is equally long and beautiful. The town of Governors Harbour, less than a mile away, is an easy and pleasant walk along the beach, and up a small hill. Snorkel and swim off our wide pink sand beach, then shower in our garden. 1000 feet up the beach is Twin Cove Beach which has the finest snorkeling in Governors Harbour. Our beaches are shallow, and historically safe, protected by a large reef system. The water is among the clearest in the world. Walk a mile to 1648 Bar and Grill, for a sunset dinner and live music. Sky Beach Bar is about 2 miles away along the beach. On Casuarina Beach, turtles nest at night, because it is so gloriously unspoiled. There is a SUPERB SANDY JOGGING/WALKING PATH extending north and south, along our beach, which is at times shrouded in foliage, and at times open to vistas of the ocean, on the old Banks Road, which is far more secluded and rustic than Banks Road on the south. One of the loveliest drives on the whole island, is the drive north, from Alfred House, to Knowles Drive, along the water, on the Old Banks Road. There is a youtube video on this. You will brush palm trees and sea grape, and see rare birds and hear the crickets sing. This is Club Med Solo. Set up your iPod and do yoga on the deck as the sun rises over the Atlantic.
