Turn of the century charmer provides convenience to local venues and bus line
About Kathy Alonzo
I own, operate, and personally oversee three quality vacation rentals in the Fairbanks area: a downtown location that sleeps 2, a two bedroom log home that sleeps 4 in a quiet neighborhood, and a huge natural log home in a prime area for aurora viewing that sleeps 8.. I hosted guests at A Moose in the Garden B&B for 10 years before my grand baby arrived and changed my life's direction. I now have changed the B&B into a vacation rental and purchased other properties to provide QUALITY vacation homes for travelers from around the world. I have made so many friends over the years. It's not a job, it's a privilege to assist my guests. I have been a primary school teacher for over 23 years and continue to teach. I love children and feel after all these years that I am now a grandma to them and love them like they are extended family. Please feel free to email me with any questions about my other properties: #430134 or #789637

Why Kathy Alonzo chose Fairbanks
The minute I walked into the house I felt an instant connection. The historical touches gave this place an immediate homey feel. I visited at different times of the day and found the area to be a quiet location. This property is perfect for a short term lease for travelers to the community for work or pleasure. Contact me directly about short term leases.
What makes this House unique
The advantage of staying here is the ability to find a lot of venues to eat, drink, shop, and be entertained within walking distance. It also is close to the events that are in the downtown area like the start of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, WIEO, Open North American Sled Dog Race, Iron Dog, and much more. The bus system is practically at your doorstep.

A wonderful little home in a so-so neighborhood
The house is extremely nice. I'm not one to notice furnishings generally, but it's clear the host went out of her way to give the place a really classy feel with a lot of unique antique furnishings. The kitchen is a little small but has everything you need. I could go on saying nice things about the house, but trust me you'll like it.
The only problem is the apartment building next door and a general vibe in the immediate neighborhood. It's got a rough, hard living vibe that had me peeking out the window to check on my truck a couple times a night. I never felt in danger and nobody did anything overt but I wouldn't consider it a safe place for children to walk around alone. However, the Thai House across the street is excellent.
Majority of our stay was very positive. The rental is right in the heart of downtown and is a short drive from many sites and activities. Communication with the property owner before and during our stay was easy and access to the rental was secure. The property had everything we needed for a week long stay including plenty of towels, kitchen items, etc.
Unfortunately, there were a couple of negative aspects that prevent me from giving this rental 5 stars. During our fourth night, there was an intense domestic dispute right outside that went on for close to an hour in the middle of the night causing police to arrive to diffuse the situation. Obviously this was of no fault of the property owner but definitely something worth mentioning as it made for an uncomfortable last couple of nights. Lastly, I appreciate the security of the rental with the code lock entry, however seeing a camera in the kitchen was definitely unsettling and prevented us from feeling comfortable enough to sit at the kitchen table. Meals were eaten on the coffee table and we consciously avoided the area where the camera covered as it felt like a violation of privacy having it in the living space. If the camera is meant to track people coming and going from the rental, that’s fine but it should be placed in the foyer and not in living areas.
Overall, we were happy with our stay but would hope that the camera would be addressed for future guests.
Beth and Dan, Thank you so much for your great review and bringing up something that has been in the news recently regarding hidden cameras at hotels and Air BnBs. I did have a camera in full sight of guests when they arrived pointed at the entrance. Unfortunately, the company that I was using has gone out of business and it is no longer operational and so even though it is a mute point now, I think that the conversation is an important one so that future guests can feel comfortable. The camera was for between guests stays when the house is empty and really was just a part of the whole security system when it was installed. The installer placed in it full view and it captured a directional image of the door entrance. I don't want people thinking that it had a view of guests in the kitchen of parts of the house that they traversed. I installed it where he suggested and when I saw the streamed image, I was satisfied that is would be all right. I am glad that you used the pull-up coffee table in the living room while you were there and found that to work out for you. Any guest that was uncomfortable with the camera, would simply stand on a chair and unplug it. I was always all right with that. Some guests liked knowing that there was security for them on the premises and ignored the camera. I am not planning to install another camera. It is not really necessary. What is needed, however, are the components to tell me the temperature, monitor lights, and give me the capability to reset the door codes between each guests remotely. Please rest assured that your privacy is secure and I have found the camera to be more hassle than it was worth.
I do remember talking to you about the fracus outside the home one night. I appreciate your understanding that these events are out of our control as hosts, and I hope it did not detract from the great time you had in our small town of Fairbanks. When I visited Asheville, TN with my sister I heard shots outside, watched the cars flee, and the cops arrive. My sister slept through the whole thing! I do not go "outside" the the Lower 48 very often, but it did not color my trip any as I know that things can get a little crazy at night. We walked all over town the next day and enjoyed the great cuisine, street entertainers. and salt cave. Thanks again for opening the conversation and I hope to have you among many of my returning guests!
This is a darling house in a GREAT location!
Kathy's place in town is the perfect place to stay during your Fairbanks adventure-at least in the winter (since that is all we know). It is just as described, and Kathy is a very responsive and attentive host. The bed was super comfortable, and the living area is very spacious and warm, with lots of seating and a television with ROKU-so we were able to use our HULU and DirectTvNow accounts along with Netflix. The kitchen is small but Kathy brought in an additional dorm fridge as we prepared all but 3 meals at "home", and there were 3 of us staying (note, the hideabed is in a nook IN the bedroom, so keep that in mind). She also brought us a larger coffee maker and an electric tea kettle when we asked. The location is perfect, and aside from the snow removal equipment (city) it was very quiet. We were blessed to see the Aurora a couple nights, and totally enjoyed the Cultural/visitors center and the Museum of the North, which is at the University . We actually spent 2 afternoons there, it was fascinating if you like that kind of stuff. We ate at the Thai restaurant across the street (which was excellent), as well at The Crepery and The Pita Place (near the college)-also an awesome meal.
I highly recommend Raven's Rest to any couple looking for a charming place to stay with an exceptional host. You will NOT be disappointed, I promise!!
Very nice house in the middle of the city. Great and cozy. We liked it very much. We will be back.
Lovely house, great location
Great house! Walking distance to shops and restaurants downtown, bus station, cultural center. It was -24 degrees outside and we were nice and warm inside. Kathy was very helpful.
Cozy winter cottage
Thank you Kathy for providing a warm and inviting place to come back to after exploring the local cross country ski trails and our late night runs to see the auroras! Everything we needed for our five night stay! Loved the bedroom - slept in late in comfort waiting for the sun to "rise"! Lots of hot water, good internet ,smart TV. Walking distance to downtown. Our only real concern was the surrounding apartment housing: our last night was interrupted by a loud and prolonged domestic dispute right outside the door. All the other nights super quiet and without incident. Certainly not Kathy's fault but none the less disturbing.
I am glad that you enjoyed the house and found it so comfortable. It is a house that I may just choose to retire in someday because I like the location so much and it is the perfect size.
However, it is unfortunate that someone had to have a disagreement in the parking area of the apartment complex next door during one night of your stay. I know the new owner of the next door property and she is an amazing property owner and takes care to choose her tenants. I know she can't control the visitors. Both of us are constantly working on our properties and have become good friends. We spend a lot of time outside in the summer and enjoy gardening together.
As you stated, we can not control the actions of others, but I want my guests to know, that they can certainly call the city police number to report any disturbance. You should not have to listen to an ongoing disturbance!
I come and go to this property all times of day and night cleaning, clearing snow, or visiting with guests who invite me in to meet them. I have found the neighbors to be helpful in helping me load my lawnmower and offering to help shovel snow!
I greatly appreciate your feedback and will be sure to post the City Police number in a conspicuous place.
And of course...guests are certainly welcome to call me for any reason! I own and manage all three of my beautiful properties and take great pride in them and want the guests to have a wonderful stay in the town that I have called home for over 40 years.
The Thai House Restaurant is right across the street and the Craft Market Gift Shop is next door. The house is easy walking distance to the Chena River where many major winter events are held each year. The city bus goes right by the house and the main terminal is within sight of the house a block away.
