Overview

About the property

3 bedroom plus loft, 3 bathroom

This log cabin offers access to deep woods wilderness while maintaining the convenience of abutting the Carinthia ski area of Mount Snow. Built in 2013, the cabin is energy efficient, modern, and comfortable yet rustic and simple in design.

The old Somerset rd, now a walking path travels behind the home. The surrounding upland forest has been conserved through the Vermont Land Trust. From this land is access to the Green Mountain National Forest back country. Several small streams emanate from these lands comprising a few of the headwaters to the North Branch of the Deerfield river.

A small pond greets you midway up the 650 foot long driveway. An abundance of amphibians, insects, and birds reside here. A travel corridor for animals from the upland forest to the Tannery Wetlands located across the street makes for interesting wildlife sitings. The Tannery Wetlands consists of 50 acres of preserved land. Here there are a couple of rough walking paths to the North Branch of the Deerfield river where you'll occasionally find brook trout.

The Valley Trail access is located at the end of the driveway on Handle Rd. This trail leads to both the mountain, other walking trails, and to the town of Dover. Mount Snow and the Hermitage/Haystack are located off of the same road as the cabin.

Sound is the first sense alerted when you exit your car. A natural pristine cold water stream rushes down exposed bedrock into a shallow pool. This pool never warms past 50 degrees. In the spring it rages, the summer it calms down, and in the winter it is muted under ice and snow. Brief dips into the water in the summer is exhilarating and rejuvenating.

Partial views of the opposing ridge line are prominent from the wrap around porch.

The home is well insulated and quite comfortable. It's heating and cooling is provided by a standing column geothermal system. Throughout the house are speakers which connect via wifi to your phone or computer I-tunes. Smart lighting is throughout the home.

The first floor of the home is a walk-out basement. Here there is a small area to remove your boots and coat. The basement has two pull-out couches, a full bathroom, and a television for movie viewing. Television viewing is only available through Apple TV. There is no cable TV.

The second floor of the home is an open concept dining/kitchen/living area. There is a bedroom with queen bed and bathroom off of the great room as well as access to the wraparound porch.

The third floor has two bedrooms, one a kids room with single bed and bunk bed and the other bedroom has a queen bed. There is a loft with a futon and board games as well as a full bathroom.

I hope you have a wonderful stay at this cabin getaway. Enjoy peaceful nights accompanied by the gentle rush of the nearby waterfalls, while tree frogs and crickets peep throughout the night.

About Michael Kirkland

Why Michael Kirkland chose West Dover

The home is located in the middle of a private nature preserve. Year round cold water therapy. Walking distance to the mountain either through the woods or on the road.

What makes this house unique

A nice hammock along with other porch furniture is located on the wraparound porch. The rushing water sounds can put you into a dreamlike state where you can come up with a visions for the future. The auditory hallucinations are fantastic. Walk down the driveway and it goes from waterfalls to frogs peeping at the pond to less water flowing to more frogs peeping.

Great location, well maintained cabin in the forest

  • 5 of 5

A nice stay. We stayed during Columbus day weekend. Cabin is well suited within a mile of mount snow. We enjoyed Oktoberfest at mount snow and walked to and from the event.

The cabin has 2 upper floor bedrooms and a main floor bedroom. Well appointed kitchen.

Nice stream runs alongside the cabin and adds to a peaceful stay.

Wonderful vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We really loved this house! It is very comfortable and has everything we needed, including linens and lots of cookware. The large yard and the creek with the waterfall and stream pool were a huge hit with us and our dogs. We hiked around behind the house, hung out on the big deck, relaxed, and had a peaceful time. Brattleboro and Wilmington are close by and fun to visit. We can't wait to return!

Great place to stay and explore from.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect for our needs. There were five of us on motorcycles. We used the cabin as a base to explore Vermont and New Hampshire for the week. The wifi was great! The owner was extremely responsive, and the cabin was easy to find. Will definitely stay here again if we're back up this way!

a great Vermont experience

  • 5 of 5

The property is exactly as advertised. We loved the house and it provided the country experience we were looking for . Hiking nearby, a beautiful porch to come home to. Everything worked well and very responsive owner. Decent cell phone reception and internet -enjoyed watching Netflix at night on the lower level. Two big couches down there so plenty of room for everyone. House tucked back enough so safe for my dog to play outside with minimal supervision. Homeowner designed with good for environment in mind, which we appreciated.

Car: recommended

The driveway is an icy harpack in winter. Snow tires and four wheel drive are highly recommended.

The Hermitage/Haystack is located off of the same road as the cabin approximately 2 miles away.

The town of Wilmington with many small shops is located about 15 minutes from the home.

Nearest Moover stop is at the Carinthia lodge.

Many restaurants in Dover are within a 5 minute drive from the home.

This home is great spot for exploring and experiencing southern Vermont.
