Overview

About the property

3 bedroom plus loft, 3 bathroom

This log cabin offers access to deep woods wilderness while maintaining the convenience of abutting the Carinthia ski area of Mount Snow. Built in 2013, the cabin is energy efficient, modern, and comfortable yet rustic and simple in design.

The old Somerset rd, now a walking path travels behind the home. The surrounding upland forest has been conserved through the Vermont Land Trust. From this land is access to the Green Mountain National Forest back country. Several small streams emanate from these lands comprising a few of the headwaters to the North Branch of the Deerfield river.

A small pond greets you midway up the 650 foot long driveway. An abundance of amphibians, insects, and birds reside here. A travel corridor for animals from the upland forest to the Tannery Wetlands located across the street makes for interesting wildlife sitings. The Tannery Wetlands consists of 50 acres of preserved land. Here there are a couple of rough walking paths to the North Branch of the Deerfield river where you'll occasionally find brook trout.

The Valley Trail access is located at the end of the driveway on Handle Rd. This trail leads to both the mountain, other walking trails, and to the town of Dover. Mount Snow and the Hermitage/Haystack are located off of the same road as the cabin.

Sound is the first sense alerted when you exit your car. A natural pristine cold water stream rushes down exposed bedrock into a shallow pool. This pool never warms past 50 degrees. In the spring it rages, the summer it calms down, and in the winter it is muted under ice and snow. Brief dips into the water in the summer is exhilarating and rejuvenating.

Partial views of the opposing ridge line are prominent from the wrap around porch.

The home is well insulated and quite comfortable. It's heating and cooling is provided by a standing column geothermal system. Throughout the house are speakers which connect via wifi to your phone or computer I-tunes. Smart lighting is throughout the home.

The first floor of the home is a walk-out basement. Here there is a small area to remove your boots and coat. The basement has two pull-out couches, a full bathroom, and a television for movie viewing. Television viewing is only available through Apple TV. There is no cable TV.

The second floor of the home is an open concept dining/kitchen/living area. There is a bedroom with queen bed and bathroom off of the great room as well as access to the wraparound porch.

The third floor has two bedrooms, one a kids room with single bed and bunk bed and the other bedroom has a queen bed. There is a loft with a futon and board games as well as a full bathroom.

I hope you have a wonderful stay at this cabin getaway. Enjoy peaceful nights accompanied by the gentle rush of the nearby waterfalls, while tree frogs and crickets peep throughout the night.

About Michael Kirkland

Regular person.

Michael Kirkland purchased this house in 2013

Why Michael Kirkland chose Mount Snow Area

My grandmother came here 100 years ago to escape polio in New York City. Extended family are my neighbors. The home is located in the middle of a private nature preserve. Year round cold water therapy.

What makes this house unique

A nice hammock purchased from a small hammock shop in Provincetown is located on the front porch. It's really comfortable. The rushing water sounds can put you into a dreamlike state where you can come up with a visions for the future. The auditory hallucinations are fantastic. Walk down the driveway and it goes from waterfalls to frogs peeping at the pond to less water flowing to more frogs peeping.

As advertised

  • 5 of 5

Everything was as advertised. About a 20 minute walk to Mount Snow. Very private relaxing location. The brook and waterfall were a big hit with my family. Enjoyed spending time in the hammock admiring the beautiful fall foliage. Everyone said they would definitely return for another stay.

Property was clean and well maintained. The mattresses and bedding were excellent - great after a day of hiking the trails. The owner was responsive and even offered to come and pickup any trash accumulated.

Just right

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cabin walking distance in the Summer from Mount Snow. Very private with beautiful features on the property. Fun bird watching from a relaxing deck with a babbling brook in the woods running thereby. Owner was responsive and clearly loves this property as evident from features such as an environmentally responsible design to sharp knives in the kitchen drawer.

Gorgeous spot, relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

The home's private setting adjacent to Mount Snow made this both a relaxing and convenient rental. We were really happy with how high tech the home was, with lights turning on and off automatically and an amazing sound system! This would be a great place to stay for either a romantic weekend for two or a fun weekend with a group of friends or family. The home was clean and well kept. Communications with the owner were easy, quick and great. It was amazing listening the waterfalls while falling asleep at night! What a treat it was to stay here! Highly recommended.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Spent the weekend here with a few friends. The house is beautiful, clean and smells like delicious wood! The owner is great and easy to work with.

Especially good if you'd like some privacy since there is a place to sleep and a bathroom on each level. Proximity to Mount Snow is perfect. Did some exploring on the path behind the house which was also really beautiful.

Great oasis -- can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time with great friends MLK weekend. The property is spacious, very clean and well maintained. The owner was a pleasure to plan with.

Things we loved in particular

- Open floor plan on main level was perfect for spending time with each other, especially while cooking. We did a lot of cooking to avoid eating out and managed with what was provided.

- Location close to the mountain. Quick ride or longer walk to access skiing and the spa/gym at the grand summit hotel.

- Amazing sound system throughout the house that was easy to use. Our phones easily connected wirelessly, allowing us to play our favorite tunes all weekend.

- Thorough and entertaining house manual -- no stones left unturned here.

- Plenty of parking in the driveway.

Things to watch out for

- Driveway can be a little tricky to drive on in icy weather (owner did warn us). We didn't all have 4 wheel drive cars, but it would help. When we did run into a little trouble with this, the owner was extremely patient and helpful.

- Warning to those looking for specific tools/equipment in the kitchen -- The kitchen is stocked with just basics (as are most rentals). If you need any specific tool for cooking, ask the owner and/or plan on bringing with you.

The driveway is an icy harpack in winter. Snow tires and four wheel drive are highly recommended.
