OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES GALORE!!!: There are plenty of activities close by including horseback riding, biking, mountain biking, white water rafting, snow skiing and tubing, sledding, ice skating, hiking (including the Appalachian Trail just 15 minutes away), fishing, golfing, shopping/strolling in Boone/Blowing Rock, or sightseeing and other activities at many outdoor parks anywhere from 10 minutes to 45-60 minutes away. Grandfather Mountain, Chimney Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a few of the more well known destinations, but there are plenty more to be discovered. Bring your bikes and ride on Sink Valley Road right in front of Waters Edge, or transport them to biking trails in the area, including one near the Mast General Store outside of Boone, North Carolina and the Virginia Creeper Trail out of Abingdon, Virginia to the north. And if none of that interests you, just sit back on one of the four decks and take in the beautiful scenery of the lake and mountains.
NOT SO OUDOOR ACTIVITIES: For those who are not into outdoor activities, there are plenty of other activities. The Butler Museum tells the story of Butler, The Town that Wouldn't Drown! The town used to be at what is now the bottom of Watauga Lake. Old structures, signs and roads are explored by avid scuba divers. In Boone, NC near Appalachian State University and in Blowing Rock, NC, there are plenty of shops with arts, pottery, clothing and collectibles. There are also quite a few excellent restaurants. For bigger city shoppers, Johnson City, TN is not far away. Before you get to Johnson City is Elizabethton which has its own set of smaller town shops, restaurants and even an oldies car show downtown on the weekend nights in the warmer months.

My wife and I are environmental consultants in Florida who love to escape to the Appalachian mountains. Good quality lake water is important to us in our profession and our free time. Those are prime reasons why we chose to build on the shores of Watauga Lake - the mountains (elevation of 2000 feet at our home) and absolutely great water quality. We enjoy it all at Waters Edge - all outdoor activities, relaxing in the cabin, cooking with family and friends, and enjoying the mountains. When we leave Waters Edge, we are saddened but already planning our next trip back.
We have made Waters Edge a truly premier cabin for us and our guests. We have carefully planned and selected everything you will need to enjoy your stay. We have it cleaned and maintained meticulously to keep it in that premier shape. We are sure you will notice it and it will add to your enjoyment.
Scott Russell purchased this cabin in 2007
We chose Watauga Lake out of twelve lakes we were looking at in the southeast because of its elevation, its great water quality, and lack of crowding. Sixty percent of the watershed is occupied by the Cherokee National Forest and will never be developed. There are no weekend or summertime boat jams on Watauga. We also wanted mountains and views of them from the cabin. On Watauga we got it all! It is the perfect vacation lake home for year round enjoyment. There are indoor and outdoor activities at the home or close by during all four seasons. Our home is in the country, but convenient to the cities. Once you experience our lake home, no others will do!
We had the pleasure of staying in the lovely Water’s Edge cabin on our recent trip to Tennessee. The “cabin” was absolutely beautiful! It is located in a very peaceful and quiet cove on the lake. It was a perfect spot to ‘explore’ the surrounding area—either by canoe or by car—or just sit and relax and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding countryside!
The cabin was tastefully furnished—high quality, yet very comfortable and homey. The kitchen (and the whole cabin, for that matter!) was equipped with everything you could possibly need or want! Many of the basic necessities were thoughtfully stocked for vacationer’s use and convenience. No detail was overlooked! The owners were very helpful and prompt in providing feedback to any questions we had, as well as suggestions for site-seeing, dining, or things to do in the area. Very clear and detailed instructions were provided on how to operate anything within the home, which made everything so user-friendly!
We truly enjoyed our stay in the beautiful Water’s Edge home—we didn’t want to leave! We hope to have the pleasure of returning again soon! Special Thank you to Scott and Michele for allowing us to share your wonderful home!
(BTW…We even had a resident Crested Kingfisher that would entertain us daily, by showing his hunting and diving expertise, right at the edge of the dock! )
We spent a week at the cabin and it far exceeded our expectations! The cabin was beautiful, very clean and it was stocked with just about anything you could possibly need for your stay. It was very peaceful and quiet. We hiked different sections of the Appalachian Trail every day with our dogs, which was full of fun adventures! Scott's communication prior to, during and after our stay was perfect. Thank you for sharing your beautiful cabin!
Wonderful amenities. Beautiful décor. Great view. Scott was very helpful and responsive. There were 6 adults staying and we were able to have additional family over for meals. We had a great time and would love to go back sometime.
We spent a long weekend at this beautiful cabin. The place was clean and comfortable with plenty of room to accommodate my family of 10 and 2 dogs without being cramped. The lack of traffic and cell phone service really make it peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed bass fishing on the lake, trout fishing in the local river and hiked to compression falls, which was only a 30 minute drive away. Scott was friendly and responded quickly. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a peaceful mountain escape.
My family and I recently stayed at Waters Edge. It is a wonderful setting with all the amenities anyone could wish for. The home is setup for comfort and convenience. We truly felt welcome and only wish we could have spent time enjoying this relaxing home. We look forward to returning in the near future. Pat Justus, Virginia
We stayed at this beautiful lakefront cabin for a family get together. The cabin was just as described if anything better! The owner Scott was wonderful to work with and made the rental very stress free. I have stayed at many different personal rentals and this was by far the cleanest I have ever stayed at. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to get away and relax in a beautiful, spacious, lakefront cabin!! We hope to return very soon!
