The Neighborhood: Harlem is a vibrant community, rich in arts and culture (The Apollo, Studio Museum in Harlem, St. Nick's Pub, Lenox Lounge, art galleries, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture), historic architecture (Strivers Row, Astor Row, Hamilton Terrace, City College), cuisine (soul food, Ethiopian, French bistro, Dominican, contemporary American, Senegalese, Mexican, bakeries, Caribbean) and much more. Nearby Attractions: The apartment is within walking distance of Central Park, Columbia University, Grant's Tomb, the Riverside and Abyssinian churches and half a block from St. Nicholas Park where the newly reopened Alexander Hamilton House is located. The M3 Bus is located steps from the apartment and takes you to the East Side's Museum Row (El Museo, Museum of the City of New York, Guggenheim, Whitney and Metropolitan museums). The M10, also on the corner, takes you to the Upper West Side (Museum of Natural History, Columbus Avenue boutiques and restaurants, Lincoln Center, movie theaters, and Central Park).

Best apartment in Harlem

  • 5 of 5

This is the best apartment in Harlem. Kakuna and Fred are wonderful hosts and will make you feel like family. The apartments have separate entrances and you will actually feel like you are at home. Everything you could possibly need for breakfast and plenty dishes pots and pans to cook if you wish. I cooked gumbo and crawfish etouffe and shared with Kakuna and Fred and they were thrilled. I have stayed in a 5 star hotel in Manhattan but I would never stay anywhere else since finding this wonderful location.

Gute Unterkunft!

  • 5 of 5

Harlem, New York inthe aummer

We booked this lovely apartment for the second time, now with both our children. We loved it! Conveniently close to the metro and shops, away from the noise of central NYC. We will definitely come back.

Update

  • 5 of 5

This is simply an update of a review I wrote two years ago (see below). This represents our third month in three years in Kakuna and Fred's home and we're already booked for next year. The apartment continues to be well-maintained and looks as good as it did several years ago. Kakuna and Fred truly care about their guests and they are like family to my wife and I. The neighborhood continues to add new restaurants and shops and people around here are very friendly to the point that it's almost like a small village in a huge city. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather stay and I continue to enjoy feeling like part of a community rather than like a tourist in a hotel surrounded by other hotels full of tourists. Step a little off the beaten path and discover the real NYC.

So nice!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed in Kakuna's apt for 3 nights and would (and hopefully will) return for a longer stay.

Everything was just right. The apt. is clean and spacious. The bathroom was big and the water pressure good. I was pleased to know that Kakuna and her family also live in the building because I knew that meant the premisis would be well cared for.

From the start, we felt like we were in good hands. Kakuna responded quickly to my inquiries and send a lot of well organized material - everything we needed to know for our stay like the wifi passwords, the recycling schedule- and a list of supermarkets, information on how to get to the apt from each airport etc. In addition, she have us some great restaurant recommendations in the neighborhood. We felt right at home and well taken care of.

We were surprised and delighted to learn that Kakuna was even bringing us breakfast supplies - eggs, milk, bread, cereal, coffee, tea, cottage cheese etc. We hardly needed at get groceries at all.

We felt very comfortable in the neighborhood as well. Although it may appear far from downtown Manhattan on a map, the express train stops nearby and it's just a short ride.

The beds are both comfortable and, best of all, it was quiet at night! No sirens, trucks, people shouting. You could hear the fridge humming, it was so peaceful.

Thanks so much for everything, Kakuna!!!
