About Gretchen

Gretchen is a writer, poet and philanthropist. She has lived in the house next door for 40 years. She purchased this property as a guest house for her friends and family. She also owns the two wooded lots on the backside of the property. She is an avid hiker and walks the trails daily. The four lots combined are a rare gem in a major city, and part of the reason you feel like you are in the middle of the woods when in fact you are 10 minutes from downtown.

Gretchen purchased this estate in 2000

Smoking is allowed outside provided cigarette butts are disposed of properly. It is a heavily wooded lot, so use an ashtray, and please dump your cigarette butts out in the trash (outside bin) and not down the toilet and into the septic. There are many levels to the house. So wheelchair access is not available. Seniors or the infirmed may have problems as well, many split levels and stairs. POOL The owner lives in the property next door (up the hill) and she has a pool below her house. There is a path and a gate from the other house. She is wiling to share it by appointment only which can be made via the property manager. She is very flexible about this, but does not want to be responsibility of maintaining a neat and attractive pool year round just in case a renter wants to use it. So it is a perk but not part of the rental.

5 Star location, 3 Star furnishings

Lovely location, wake up to birds chirping, deer wandering and relatively close to getting downtown. Kitchen is well-stocked although a newer, large frying pan would be a great addition. We had 7 adults in our group and did not have trouble with the 10 pm outdoor noise ordinance despite a jest here and there.

Beautiful space, great windows - could use some updates and additional comfy seating in the great room. Visited February 2017, would have loved to throw open all the doors and windows, but the screens were missing in most of the doors and windows. Perhaps having doors open in Austin is a very small window of time. The weather was almost perfect. The house would benefit well from a thorough, top to bottom spring cleaning, although keeping bugs completely out and webs away when surrounded by woods would be a tough job.

Bathrooms could definitely use some updates. Small, 70's style, low shower heads. Towels and rugs were getting a bit ragged and the house could stand some freshening up in general. Washer and dryer were on premises, so freshening up a load of towels was not a hardship.

The spacious accommodations were very reasonable and perhaps if it were updated, the price would not be as attractive or it would be in extremely high demand. The steep curving hills are a bit intimidating, but the instructions were thorough so even when Waze got it wrong, we were able to find it without too much trouble.

Met the owner briefly, she is delightful.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. It was a lot bigger than expected, very clean, and had everything that we needed and more. It's crazy how close it is to all of the downtown action because when you're at the house you feel like you're hundreds of miles away. We got a little lost on the way in and the owner was very helpful in getting us there. She talked to us on our way out and was so sweet. The windows are huge and one highlight of the trip was looking out the backyard and seeing five deer walk through.

Delightful House on the Creek

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the house in 2012, and were excited to see it was available for another family reunion in December 2016. The kids didn't want to leave! The toy room has shelves of toys and a child-sized table and chairs. Outside, there's a tree house, swing, and two zip lines! Not to mention the opportunity to explore along the trail by the creek. The house is comfortable, well furnished, and easily accommodated five adults and five children, as well as local friends for a cookout on Saturday night. Crossing our fingers that the house will be available for our next reunion!

Great house for multiple families

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in June 2016 and the place was great. It was well kept and clean, and the owner was very friendly and when some issues arose they were immediately taken care of.

The property is in a great location, as your about 10 minutes from downtown Austin, yet feel like you're miles away from the city in the hills. The property has some short trails that are great for hiking with the kids and keeping busy when around the home.

There is a great shopping center about 7 minutes from the house with a grocery store, Tacodeli and other restaurants.

If I come back to Austin I would stay here again.

Place was great!

  • 5 of 5

Hard to find, but worth it. Totally secluded, but only 10 minutes from the heart of Austin. There were 5 adults & 4 teenagers in our group and there was plenty of room for all of us. Plenty of towels and linens. We were in town for a wedding and the place worked out perfect for us. Much more convenient than a hotel downtown. Will definitely stay here again if we are in Austin in the future. I only had one complaint.....need a lid for the large frying pan!
