Bernadette and Tim O’Donoghue met in The Windy City of Chicago a few years back. We acquired the property in 2002. We then returned from Chicago in 2004.
Bernadette was a paralegal secretary and is now a stay at home Mom and an excellent baker, I am an electrician by trade but got into construction during my 14 years in Chicago. I restored several old houses and classic vintage apartment buildings during my time there. I coupled this experience with Bernadette’s keen eye and interior design savvy to create some wonderful finishes and unusual touches. We began the colossal rehab project in 2004 to restore the Priory to its former glory ,it was basically completed it in 2007 or is it ever complete I like to ask myself ?
We pride ourselves in welcoming you into our place.
Tim O'Donoghue purchased this cottage in 2002
I grew up in Killarney, where my parents owned a camping site and I truly loved meeting visitors on a daily basis. We have 4 children and we wanted to raise them here in Ireland, so we said we would give it a shot and here we are. When this property became available we realized how unique it was and what a fantastic opportunity it would be to own The Priory.
We are in a key location,a ten minute walk from town but it feels like we are in the heart of the countryside where you cannot hear a sound by night.
You will get a quiet private house to yourself where you can come and go as you please. You can cook when you want and have the full use of the 1.5 acre property on private grounds. You can sit back and relax in the front of the open hearth fire sipping a nice Irish whiskey or reading a good book with the sweet smell of turf burning away.
Each cottage has a Jacuzzi you can slip into and soothe the soul after a hectic day.
You will get the real feel of Irish living and live like we live ourselves while visiting in your home away from home.
We are on site owners who are here to help you in any way you require and assure a wonderful stay. We have invaluable knowledge about the local area from cultural information to hikes, local food joints to off the beaten track drives. We can organize in-house chef, or poetry recital or to a music session.
We like to tell our guests ''We are as near or as far as you wish.'
We're on a multi-month tour and this place has been our favourite accommodation so far! Big kitchen, big bath, welcoming hosts, short walk to town... Wish we had been able to stay longer!*
Four friends just returned from Ireland and spent three nights at the Priory. It meet all expectations. Tim was wonderful and even arranged an after hour jaunty ride for us after returning from the Dingle Peninsula. Rooms were quite large, well appointed with all the modern conveniences. Unfortunately did not get to meet Bernadette or have home made scones, but maybe next time, and there will be a next time! Thanks again, Tim for a wonderful stay
Four of us stayed at the Priory for a week. It is beautifully decorated with new decor embedded in the charm of this old charming building. The full size kitchen was perfect. The two bedrooms en suite, were both spacious and well appointed. Out hosts were very helpful with information and getting us on at tour at the last minute. We loved the wood and peat burning stove, making things nice and cozy. We enjoyed the homemade scones as well. The location is excellent allowing us to easily walk into town, and drive to nearby tourist sights. I highly recommend the priory and wouldn't hesitate to stay here during our next visit to Killarney.
Our family stumbled upon the O'Donohue's Priory property when we booked lodging for 4 in fall of '14 to scout for our planned August '15 family reunion - what we found was the PERFECT location for our group of 25 - and now we have memories for a lifetime! Last week at the Priory was a dream come true.
There are several "cottages" around a picturesque courtyard all located on a quiet, private property. Each cottage affords ample privacy for independent travelers...but in our case...it provided the IDEAL location for all of us to be together. This was the trip of a lifetime for our family and we would HIGHLY recommend the Priory to groups of any size.
This particular cottage housed one family with younger children. The two bedrooms were perfect and provided a get way for down time. Like all the cottages at the Priory, the kitchen was gorgeous, modern, and fully equipped; the laundry was convenient; the beds were high quality and the bathrooms were beautifully furnished and had great showers!
The location of this property is perfect...close (easy walk) to town but quiet and secluded. There is ample parking on site and cabbies arrive within minutes for adventures farther away. We arranged for 2 all-days bus trips to the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula; explored the National Forest; biked the lake; hiked up Torc mountain; and walked all over town! Our grand finale was a night at the Killarney Brewing Company - complete with supper, GREAT beer (what I wouldn't give for a Devil's Helles Lager right now) and two balladeers that entertained us for hours. Be sure to visit KBC!
The only downside to our trip was leaving - Please give the Tim, Bernadette and all of the O'Donohues (including Mazie and Oscar!) our best when you get there!
My husband and I traveled with two other couples, so we were 6 altogether. The Priory was just perfect! It was great having a washer and dryer; the whirlpool tub and steam shower were quite deluxe. The location is quiet and peaceful even though it is in the lively city of Killarney. We did walk to town on several occasions and found that it took about 15 minutes -- no trouble at all. It was a great place in a great location and my only hope is that we can get back there again someday soon.
