Good, but could have been better

  • 3 of 5

Overall our experience was good but not great.

Our rental was to include chef service. For two days we had a very good chef,

but then he quit. We never found out why. It certainly wasn't due to a lack of

complements. The local manager had a friend who ran a nearby B & B. This

friend cooked the rest of our lunches and dinners . The first night he prepared the meal

on sight. It was very good, but after that the meals were "delivered", and they were generally

cold or over cooked.

The cleaning and maintenance staff , Latichia and Carlos, were very helpful and responsive.

They even helped with breakfast and shopping after the chef quit. The new local manager,

however, was rarely present and not very communicative. There was little help

when it came to arranging activities as cited in the VBRO property description

and the owner's correspondence.

Overall the facility was good and very clean. However, the "swimming" pool was much too small

for swimming and despite the maintenance person's daily efforts, it never looked clean.

Another minor issue was that a couple of the room safes failed to function.

The dark sand beach was beautiful and the water warm, as advertised. Most of the time you

owned it, as there were few if any other persons there. However, even though the property

has its own beach front, there is no view of the beach from the house itself.. There's a short 3-4

minute walk to the beach from the house. No problem, but several members of our party were

a bit disappointed having misinterpreted the VBRO property description.

A place you have to see to believe

  • 5 of 5

I have to admit I was worried that Atrevida wouldn't live up to our expectations of a comfortable, relaxing place to stay, but my worries were for nothing.

We went there for a small family reunion of 7 people, and we arrived late on the evening of 12/3. They had a delicious piping hot dinner waiting for us. A nice unexpected surprise.

That was the first of many more delicious abundant food. Leticia, the conceierge/maid was wonderful. She set up all our day excursions, purchased our food, and in general, made sure things ran smoothly (which they did for the most part). They speak Spanish, with minimal English, but we had someone with us who spoke Spanish well, so we didn't really have an issue. The staff of 4 people (concierge/maid, cook and his assistant, and the groundskeeper) were so friendly, helpful, and accommodating, that by the end of the week they felt more like family. Other reviews say to tip them well at the end of your stay, and I absolutely must agree.

The accommodations were interesting. The downstairs is entirely open to the elements, and initially we were getting bitten by bugs, but once we started using the soap and shampoo they provided (all natural with citronella) that was no longer an issue. The beauty of this house is in its proximity to the beach, and yet being in the jungle at the same time. Every morning you wake up to the sounds of the monkeys, parrots, toucans, and other wildlife, with a short walk to a beach that was basically ours alone.

The house doesn't have any tv's, air conditioning, and internet is only available with a laptop(which none of us brought there), but being unplugged just made the vacation more relaxing.

We went zip lining, fishing, hiking, all arranged by Leticia, and all quite enjoyable. The staff made lunches for us to bring on those day excursions.

The pool is not really meant for swimming in, but rather with seating on all sides it made for a great place for cooling down, drinking, conversations , and generally having a great time.

I would definitely recommend this place for just about any type of gathering. I will say though, it really wouldn't suit anyone that needs handicap access, or young children because of the stairs, and areas with no railings. It's well maintained, clean, modern, private, and each bedroom has its own bathroom.

What more can I say but that I loved our time there and would definitely go again."

Cannot Recommend Enough

  • 5 of 5

I am really, really late giving this review, but wanted to do one nonetheless. There were 4 of us that stayed here during a week in May and we had an amazing time. It is difficult to imagine a more exotic and private place to stay for the money. We loved seeing countless monkeys and birds around the property and we never saw another person on the beach the entire duration of our stay. We had some issues with the chef quitting during our stay, but Vlad took care of everything and made it all work. He was great and made sure to help us in any way possible. I would definitely recommend to go through Vlad for any excursions, as he can likely get you a much better deal. We would definitely love to come back!

Far beyond all expectations.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful home in a fabulous location. Enhanced by a professional and friendly staff that catered to every need. Vlad, the house manager is a wonderful host. He arranged all our excursions and made sure everything went smoothly. Always finding ways to make the smallest thing special. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for casual elegance, combined with adventure. We are coming back soon.

A Magical Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 10, six adults + 4 kids from Texas had an amazing stay at Casa Atrevida! It was just as beautiful as the photos, and perfectly described on the web site. Vlad did a great job planning meals and activities for us each day. We don't normally do excursions, but this was the perfect vacation to give them a try.

We toured primary rainforest at Cabo Matapalo, took a boat to see dolphins, snorkel, and visit the wildlife sanctuary, we zip-lined in Matapalo, kayaked the mangroves, and a few adults did a day trip to Corcovado. Everything was awesome! We saw every animal we wanted to and before our week was up, even had monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans and parrots around the house. Our children were thrilled with the two dogs and cats that lived on the property as well. One of the cats had kittens and they got to visit them each day! So sweet!

I want to give our chef Kevin props for working so hard every day and feeding us delicious food! My daughter is Celiac, so he had a special challenge. Kevin was wonderful and when Vlad was ill he went out of his way to get us to our planned zip-lining tour. He even drove us all the way there, which was above and beyond!

I'd recommend Casa Atrevida to anyone looking for a remote getaway in a wonderful part of Costa Rica! Getting to/from the Osa Peninsula was another highlight of our trip, flying on Nature Air! What a thrill!

Muchos Gracias to Carlos, Vlad, Kevin and all the staff at Casa Atrevida!
