Nakano Apartment - A Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five adults were very comfortable in the Nakano apartment for the two weeks that we stayed in Japan. The apartment was located in a good location close to the train station and the Broadway shopping complex which provided for all of our needs including the choice of many restaurants. The apartment was clean and highly functional providing an excellent home base for us. It was easy to access Japans great rail system using the JR rail pass and travel to various tourist sites on day trips or overnight. Makoto-San was a great host and provided very valuable information on the sights to see as well as getting to and from the airport and other various locations. We believe that he is a great ambassador and represents the welcoming nature of the people of Japan and particularly the people at the information centres that are always willing helpers.

Perfect Location. Quiet Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

My two sons and I stayed in this apartment for a 10-night stay. It was the perfect location for us, since the subway/train station was close by. We had plenty of space for the three of us.

Nakano has a grocery store, which we shopped at daily. It's just a few blocks from the apartment, and you pass it on your way to/from the subway station. One thing to keep in mind is that Nakano is not a tourist spot. We did have a bit of trouble when it came to dining in some of the local restaurants. Two of them turned us away. Not sure if it was the language barrier or if we indeed required a reservation. We should have asked our host, Makoto, for a few more dining suggestions while in that area.

Speaking of Makoto, he was an absolute pleasure. From the moment we reserved the room, until our departure, he provided us with much information and assistance. Make sure you understand the trash sorting before your host departs. It can be confusing. I would definitely stay there again. It was our home away from home.

Small but efficient, great location!

  • 5 of 5

Small apartment (though spacious for Tokyo standards). Exactly as described. Thoughtfully furnished and clean. We had no problem sleeping 8 people there. We were out in the city most of the time, so this was a great place to crash. Just a few blocks from a great subway (and Japan Rail) station.

Nakano area has everything you need: shopping arcade that goes on for blocks, grocery store, restaurants, etc. Neighbors and neighborhood were quiet. Host Makoto was great via e-mail beforehand. He greeted us at the train station and was careful to explain everything, but we were jetlagged and missed a few things. Would have been helpful to have some English labeling/stickers on the remotes for air conditioners and washing machine. Garbage sorting procedures (6 differeent bins!!!) could have been more clearly labelled as well.

Overall - recommend highly. Can't beat the price and the amenities/ location.

Great apartment!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third trip to Tokyo and the the first time that we decided to go with an apartment. I can safely say that we were not disappointed with this place at all:)

Firstly, the communication that we had with Makoto, the manager - Top rate. He was great and so very helpful, not to mention funny. He had us in stitches from the get go.

Next, the apartment itself, tucked away a few hundred meters from JR Nakano station, the unit was perfect for our group of four people. It was simple and exactly what we needed. It is precisely what it says it is in the description, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a dinning area and not much else. Perfect for those that are just going to be traveling around for most of the time anyway.

For those that are expecting a huge western-style place this isn't for you. This is Japan, every inch of space is precious.

The surrounding area of Nakano is a warren of narrow streets and alleys, filled with various restaurants, eating places, and shops. For those that can't necessarily stomach much Japanese food there is a KFC and a 24 hour Mcdonalds. There is also a supermarket no more than 5 minutes walk from the apartment too.

If you love Japanese culture and way of life, Nakano is a great place.

Just near the train station there is a shopping arcade that just seems to be on the go at every hour of the day. I wish I was able to have spent more time in the area. Apparently, for those that love/like Japanese anime, there are a few stores in and around the arcade. Also, if you travel a few stops away from Nakano you can get to the Ghibli Museum quite easily.

Nakano itself is not all that far from JR Shinjuku station, via the Chuo line, depending on which train service you catch. There is a rapid service and a local service. The rapid service is generally quite crowded, were as the local will be less so. If you are traveling with big items of luggage avoid the rapid service if possible.

Overall, we were extremely satisfied with the apartment. It was well-maintained and clean, and everything that we expected. If I were to travel with a small group again I would certainly come back to here.

Loved this apartment!

  • 5 of 5

Had a week in Tokyo (first visit!) with my partner and a friend in late October 2013.

Really couldn't have been happier with this apartment - we've had a couple of great experiences in VRBO apartments in Europe - and this was just as good.

The location is fantastic - not a tourist area as such - barely saw any other westerners there! - but it's only a quick metro ride (one stop) to Shinjuku - and it's easy to get to Tokyo Central and the Ginza shopping district from Nakano as well.

Nakano is full of shops and eateries - there are literally hundreds of restaurants in the area - and we ate so well! You'd have to try really hard to find a bad meal I think! And the prices were very reasonable too... (the only downside is that because Nakano isn't usually a tourist destination - there were no picture-menus to make it easy to just point and order. All strictly in Japanese here! - but we found the locals friendly and happy to help - so be bold! If we can manage it - you can!)

The apartment itself is compact (it's Tokyo remember - space is at a premium!) but has everything we required and was scrupulously clean and tidy.

The bedrooms are large, comfortable and have plenty of natural light. We really didn't use the kitchen/dining that much as we ate out pretty much all the time - but it had all the basics.

The only slight nitpicks i have are that the huge built in wardrobe/closet in the main bedroom was already full with the folding outdoor furniture and a bunch of extra quilts/duvets/doonas, etc - which meant nowhere to really hang anything and that we pretty much lived out of our suitcases. No biggie.

Also, there were only a few towels in the bathroom - we couldn't find any others - and these were smaller and thinner than these large, spoilt westerners were used to - so that was a little irritating - but again - not a major drama.

Otherwise - it was a fantastic base to come home to - and we will definitely stay there again on our next visit (we fell for Tokyo in a big way - will definitely return!)

Finally - a shout-out for Makoto - our real-estate contact there who looked after us so well. He went above and beyond the call of duty in helping us make the most of our stay. He is kind and patient and made himself available to answer questions about the apartment - and visiting Tokyo (and using the Metro!). He really is wonderful - and we are so grateful for his assistance.

Highly recommended!

Great apartment in Nakano

  • 4 of 5

Great location in Nakano, not too far from station, with easy rail connections to Shinjuku and other key Tokyo spots. Makoto made arrival easy and escorted us from Nakano station to the apartment, and explained everything clearly. The apartment is set up with everything needed for a short stay, with a reliable wifi connection. It's warm, clean, and has good laundry and bathroom facilities. We would stay here again without doubt.
