An old rock quarry dug for the Flagler railroad that has turned into a habitat.
We like to think of this house and its location as "fancy camping". You are right in the middle of a deer preserve. There is actually a wooded area right across the street.
The house is located on the northern most tip of Big Pine Key. It is remote enough to be surrounded by uninhabited islands that are just a short boat ride or kayak away. Despite that, shopping and groceries are just a short drive from the house.
House was lovely. Wished the house had a couple of bikes and an ice chest.
My wife and I spent Thanksgiving week at the Captain D's Hideout, this was a great spot to hang out and visit the keys. Speed limits are ridiculous but we were not in a hurry, just went with island time. The house is great has all that one would want, every thing was very clean and organized. There are a few things that really stood out to me, this is a house that the owners use, so 1st ( the bed was fantastic, I got good sleep on it, I use a Tempurpedic and for a box spring this was great. ) 2nd ( the kitchen area was super clean, even the fridge was spotless ) 3rd ( this has been the only place I have gone and all the video equipment worked as it should have, I had to call the owner and he was happy to help and all went as he implied. ) The supermarket down the street has just about everything you will need, there are also RedBox's at the supermarket along with the drug store. Key-West is about an hour or 35 miles down the road. My wife and I work a lot of hours running an industrial supply company and we deal with lots of people daily and when we go on vacation we really like to go to a quiet place and relax, this location was great for that. Plenty of room around the house and in the house. I would highly recommend for someone who wants to have a beautiful place to stay and have piece of mind.
Leo's house is comfortable with all the amenities needed for two or more people. We put our Sea Eagle kayak into the canal out back and paddled out to the Howe Key/Big Pine channel. Not a soul in sight! The Key deer were very cute though a little shy but we saw them every day. The neighbors were respectful and quiet. TVs in every room with premium channels too! Everything provided except for refrigerated items and dry staples. Could have used an ice cream scoop and Pizza cutter though! :-). Winn-Dixie is four miles away, and the pizza at Pizzaworks if very good. We spent our honeymoon there and would love to go back someday.
We rented Captain D's Hideout for 9 nights including Labor Day Weekend. It was originally going to just be my husband and me but with Leo's permission (and since there was room), we invited some family members to join us for the long weekend at the beginning of our stay. From the moment we arrived, we were in a Keys frame of mind and it lasted all week long!
The layout of the house was perfect - there was plenty of room inside and out (even over the weekend when there were 6 of us). We spent mornings enjoying coffee on the second story deck looking over the canal and ended our days in the same spot enjoying the stars and the ever present breeze (not to mention the hammock!). The house had everything we needed and we literally didn't need to bring anything except our clothes and our food! We rented a boat for a few days since there is a dock and also had our kayak and a paddleboard which we had no trouble storing in the ample space available. The location of the house was ideal for kayaking and we spent many hours on the water... finishing each outing with a quick rinse in the freshwater shower right on the dock! The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful and the Key deer were everywhere. We also brought our bicycles with us and rode all over Big Pine Key including to the Blue Hole which was fabulous first thing in the morning. It was tough to leave when our stay ended but the good news is, we've already reserved our next stay here and are already counting the days!
Leo was great to work with and I have nothing but positive things to say about him and this fabulous rental house.
Spent two weeks at the property with our three young children and had a great time. Having our skiff at the dock made fishing and snorkeling trips very convenient. We enjoyed the frequent key deer visits especially. Lots of activities nearby including those in Key West, Bahia Honda, and Marathon to name a few. Great eats at the square grouper and Kiki's nearby. House was as advertised and Leo the owner was very responsive in addressing one minor issue that popped up. We would definitely recommend the house to others looking for the same experience. Time went by too fast.
Lovely property. Captain D's hideout had everything you need. Comfortable beds, clean home, beautiful property in Big Pine. Easy access for boaters from canal. Great location on Big Pine for local shopping and stores.
Would highly recommend this Captain D's hideout.
Your stay is right in the middle is a deer preserve and yet all your needed conveniences are nearby.
