We are a family with 3 kids d) from Vancouver, Canada
owner purchased this house in 2011
We fell in love with this house and its location the minute we saw it. After we bought it we made extensive renovations. Our whole family loves coming here as often as we can.
The house is in a unique location, which allows you to hear the waves and feel the ocean breeze.
This vacation home is located in a quiet neighborhood in the north of Kauai in the town of Princeville. It is a lovely house with everything we needed or wanted for our family vacation. There is room for children (and adults) to play outdoors, a BBQ grill and plenty of seating and eating space both indoors and out. We found the kitchen well equipped, you just have to look around in the drawers and cupboards for what you need. The beach equipment was an additional perk that we all enjoyed. The home is bright with lots of windows to capture the breeze. We found that we drove quite a bit to the places we wanted to visit but the island isn't big, so in a couple of hours, maximum, you can get anywhere you want to. There is a nice grocery store at the entrance to the subdivision and other shops, which was very convenient. We enjoyed our stay at this house very much and the owner was very pleasant to work with.
I must say the location of this home is excellent. Home was very spacious. Beautiful downstairs shower. Plenty of towels, pans and kitchen utensils. Washer and dryer were excellent- used them almost daily. Note that the listing says "pool" but it is a kiddy pool. Humidity was very rough so air conditioning would have been nice.
The home was everything we were anticipating and needing for our vacation. We absolutely loved the peaceful neighborhood!! We were able to take walks and bike rides around the neighborhood, along the golf course, to Hideaway Beach, Queen's Bath, and a wonderful coffee shop.
The kitchen is equipped with everything we needed to prepare meals there. Still no coffee grinder, but we got that done at Costco prior to going to the house so thanks to previous review for the heads up.
The bed upstairs in the master bedroom is very soft - just be aware if you need a firm mattress. The portable A/C worked great in one of the downstairs bedroom as well.
It was great to have the beach towels and snorkel gear available for use!
We would definitely recommend this home to our friends!
My husband and I stayed here for 2 1/2 weeks in February. There are some changes to the house which are not reflected in the pictures. This house has had some thought put into making guests feel at home. I would only suggest adding a coffee grinder in the kitchen. Any issues we had the caretaker attempted to address as soon as possible. I would also address in the arrival instructions how food needs to be stored as some people who have never traveled or lived in tropical areas do not know that they must keep food items in sealed bags, containers and items spoil quickly. We had problems with cockroaches. The owner dealt with this promptly but, this was our first time in traveling to the islands since 1973, that this has been a problem.
The location is just wonderful. Just a block or so to the ocean to watch the whales and the waves. The very quiet neighborhood was so peaceful. It was just what we were looking for. The large back yard was a bonus. The house had everything we needed and more. We loved the two patios, the barbeque and the hammock.
It was perfect for we 3 couples.
Our only complaint is, the lovely wicker couches were rather uncomfortable for sitting for any length of time and judging by the mattresses in them would not have been very comfortable for adults to sleep on either.
Our family of four rented this Princeville home for a week in June. The location is excellent and the home was nicely furnished & reasonably well stocked. However, I gave the home only three stars due to it being falsely listed as having air conditioning when it effectively did not. What the home actually has is a one-room console air conditioning unit, boxed & stored in the garage.
If you’re willing to go to the effort of actually installing the unit, the owner provided instructions that required you to first unbox the 55 lb. unit, carry it to the single room of your choice, wash the reusable air filter and then jerry rig the flexible vent into a window that is not of the matching size. I don’t think it is reasonable to require house guests who are on vacation to do all this work.
It turned out that even after I did all the installation work, the AC was in fact broken. After spending several unproductive hours on the phone trouble shooting the problem with the home’s local caretaker, he came to the house & confirmed that it was broken. However, despite my subsequent follow-up calls & email exchanges with the owner, she was not able to either repair or replace the AC during our entire stay. Note- even if this AC unit had been working, it is still only rated to cool one 300 SQ FT. room or only about 15% of the house’s total area.
Since my youngest daughter has asthma, we only considered rentals that provided air-conditioning throughout the house - as was the case with our prior week’s rental on Kauai’s south shore. If the Princeville house had not advertised that it included AC, we would not have rented it. While I would much rather have had AC, I subsequently asked the owner for a modest 20% refund. Even after all this, the owner somehow felt justified in countering with a 15% refund.
Bottom line- if you require AC (this was early June and the temperature was consistently in the mid-80’s with high humidity), I recommend you rent a different home.
We arrived 1 am Sunday night, six of us, including my 86 year old parents and my wife's 82 year old mother. The house is great for the elderly/handicapped, two bedrooms and a sun room sleeping area downstairs. At around sunrise, we learned there were roosters nearby. "Cockadoodle do". (Did not know feral roosters and chickens, with little chicks, were so plentiful on Kauai. And so brilliantly colored. I miss them.)
Onto the house -- very comfortable and well appointed. The home is located in a golf community, groceries are 10 minutes away. Be sure to enjoy tapas at an outstanding restaurant, Bar'cuda about 20 minutes away. And watch humpback whales breach from the lighthouse up the highway.
We absolutely recommend Irina and her lovely home near Princeville. (Irina, we recommend the couch that was in the sunroom.)
