Great little place!

  • 4 of 5

My daughter and I stayed in this little basement studio for 4 nights. Everything went well, Kakuna the host was great with helping us and being in touch with us before we arrived and during our stay. She left us some bread and eggs and jam and milk and oj for our stay and she helped us with our itinerary. The room was well supplied with blankets and towels. It wasn't fancy but it was a lovely little spot to stay and we would do it again! It felt safe and a nice quiet neighborhood just a couple mins walk to the subway.. our only disappointment was that the bikes weren't in working order.. thank you Kakuna for everything!

Owner's Response: Jane was a wonderful guest. It was a pleasure to help her plan for the trip and give suggestions while she was in the city. Really sorry about the bikes. So few guests have used them in recent years that we neglected to service them this year. We'll definitely remedy that so, thanks Jane for getting us back on track! We would be happy to welcome Jane back to NYC.

Bad

  • 1 of 5

This property was really bad first of all nobody mentioned in overall description that this is the open studio in the basement. We rented this place for three nights but we didn't want to stay there because of overall conditions of this place. It may seems like it is great place based on the reviews but it is not. Stay away from this place.

Owner's Response: Dear Patricia, we were surprised to receive your review because you did not stay in our studio apartment. When you did not check in as expected on your arrival date, we made numerous attempts to contact you through your date of departure, via email, the HomeAway platform, SMS, and telephone because we were concerned that something may have happened to prevent your travel plans. We never received a reply. The studio apartment is exactly as listed and photographed, a private, one-room studio with an open kitchen, and a private full bathroom only for our guests' use. It is two steps down from the street level, the standard style of historic New York brownstone architecture, with full-sized windows facing the front of the house. It is not in the basement, which is actually located underneath the floor that the studio apartment is on. We strive to be responsive, but unobtrusive hosts and we are proud of our numerous reviews, the majority of which are five stars with a number of repeat customers as well. Because of this commitment we wish that you had communicated with us regarding your concerns. That would have allowed us the opportunity to make an alternative arrangement with you. We hope that you enjoyed your stay in our city and wish you many wonderful travel experiences in the years to come.

Convenient location in a very New York area

  • 5 of 5

Loved staying here...had everything we needed and convenient to 135 St subway station. Local neighborhood was great too with lots of places to eat and hang out close by. We would stay here again if in New York.

Très bon deal pour Manathan. L'appartement est propre et fonctionnel.

  • 4 of 5

Very Welcoming

  • 5 of 5

This studio apartment is small but very efficient and has everything one needs for a very comfortable stay. When I arrived, I was a bit concerned because the window faces the street. As I am rather noise-intolerant, I was worried about street noise at night. It's a quiet street and nice neighborhood, and noise was not a problem at all.

I met Kakuna, the lovely owner, shortly after arriving. She had breakfast items available (eggs, orange juice, bread and butter), which was just so thoughtful and welcoming. The bathroom is a good size for NYC. There is a dishwasher and washer/dryer, which is really a nice option. The kitchen has everything needed for cooking a meal. The subway is very close and there is even a park nearby. I felt very safe and would definitely stay again.

Awesome place and hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Like others, we'd never been to New York, and were concerned about Harlem. Based on the other reviews we read and Kakuna's feedback, we went ahead and went for it. So glad we did. My wife was a little concerned a few times about the neighborhood, but only because of her own fears... We never experienced anything upsetting at all. I loved being in a place full of so much history and character. I felt like I was in a genuine place in New York, not some sterile environment. The studio was perfectly fine. We were able to get in late, and sleep in late, without any problem. I was surprised how quiet it was... very nice. Kakuna was very attentive and provided great ideas. We had a problem with the fridge, and they took care of it right away. I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to others. As a side note, if you haven't been already, go to the famous Apollo, especially on amateur night (Wednesdays). It's just a few blocks away, and an amazing time.

Owner's Response: Brett and his wife were wonderful guests. For first timers in NYC, they really squeezed a lot into their week. Brett let us know immediately about a problem with one of the appliances, and we were able to get it fixed right away as a result. We're really glad to know that they felt safe and enjoyed the history and culture of our community. We would welcome Brett and his wife back in the future and, in the meantime, wish them many more exciting travel adventures.
