Luxury 2 Bed Apartment on the Beautiful Shores of Loch Ness

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,076 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, 1 half bathroom, sleeps 4 + baby

'Livingstone' is a luxury 2 bed apartment which sleeps 4 (plus baby). It is situated in an expertly converted Grade A listed Benedictine Monastery, beautifully set on the southern tip of Loch Ness.

The apartment which is on the first floor has a double bedroom with built in wardrobe (the ensuite has bath and separate shower) while a second bedroom can either be a double bed or two singles. There is also a separate bathroom (with bath). The main bedroom overlooks the cloister gardens and the giant chess/draughts game on the grass below.

The relaxing living area is open plan and retains many of its original features such as the arched windows and stone fireplace. There are comfortable sofas on which to watch the large flat screen tv (satellite freeview) and a library of DVDs and videos.

The kitchen area with its granite worktops is modern and fully equipped with gas hob, oven, microwave, fridge, freezer and washer/dryer together with plenty of utensils and cooking equipment.

Leisure Activities: There are many things to see and do both in the grounds of the Abbey and in the surrounding area. A few minutes' walk along the atmospheric cloister of the Abbey and you reach the converted monks' refectory, now a relaxing lounge with stained glass windows, a full-size snooker table, table football and free Wi-Fi. There is an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room (now closed until further notice). You could also relax in the 20 acres of private grounds overlooking the Loch, play tennis, croquet or bowls, indoor or outdoor table tennis. There is just a 2 minute walk into Fort Augustus. Watch the boats pass slowly by through the centre of the village (through 5 locks) along the Caledonian Canal down into Loch Ness.

There are shops here for all the essentials as well as several pubs and restaurants for eating out. The area is wonderful for walking, taking cruises on the Loch and visiting the stunning castles of the Scottish Highlands. A boat trip can be taken to Urquhart Castle from the landing stage next door to the Abbey or you take the Express Ferry to Inverness.

For those hunting the Loch Ness Monster, there is a Nessie hunting trip on the Loch, or you could visit one of two Loch Ness Exhibition Centres in Drumnadrochit (20 mins away).

At the Nevis Range Experience (30 mins away), you could view the amazing mountains from Britain's only mountain gondolas (chair lifts) or take the nearby tourist walk up Ben Nevis (highest mountain in the British Isles). Mountain biking and Snowsports also take place here as well as the new High Wire Adventure (for all the family).

The apartment has a 4 star rating from the Scottish Tourist Board.

Relaxing and everything you could wish for

  • 5 of 5

We travelled with another couple of friends. We arrived in the evening after stopping off to get a few bits at the supermarket. We didn't need to because it was all there for us, thank you so much for that. Including a rather nice bottle of fizz.

The apartment has absolutely everything you could possibly need.

Very tastefully decorated and the view from the living room into the cloisters is Potter magic.

The following morning I walked down to the loch alone and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried at the beauty of the peace, birdsong, and the mist rolling over the loch, heaven on earth.

We will be coming back again, a real gem of a find.

Unique Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with another couple, have recently returned home from a three week holiday in the UK, one week of which we spent in this lovely apartment. It is very well equipped and furnished and well situated in a small village on the banks of Loch Ness. Where else could you wake up in the middle of the night and see the lights in the cloisters? You will not regret staying here and by all means stay in the ballroom apartment of Dollarbeg Castle as well if your time permits.

We Didn't Want To Leave

  • 5 of 5

If you're entertaining the notion to stay in the Fort Augustus area, this is the ideal place to stay. The apartment is as represented. It is modern and tastefully appointed. If you choose not to eat out every night, you can certainly prepare food. Even the food preparation equipment is first class. There is a flat screen television that I'm sure is wonderful but we never turned it on.

Sometimes when I read a description, I'm not really sure what kind of bathroom facilities are present. For clarification, both bathrooms have a tub, sink and toilet. The one bathroom off the master bedroom has an excellent shower, with consistent heat and a very good pressure. The bathroom without the shower is located very near the second bedroom and off the hallway. So it is quite manageable if you have four people (as we did).

What you really have is the best of both worlds - an historic abbey with beautiful stonework and grounds - and a modern apartment inside the abbey. You can look directly out several of the apartment windows and see the chess set in the cloister.

Good WiFi is really only available in the billiards room but you can pick it up near the window area from the second bedroom. The pool is modern and there are wet and dry steam rooms adjacent.

Fort Augustus is truly only a two minute walk which makes it nice if you are sampling good Scottish ales or a wee dram of Scotch downtown. Coming from the USA, I have trouble enough negotiating the left hand lane powered by diet coke.

Management is efficient and cordial. A local woman takes care of the apartment and will meet you upon arrival. I am omitting their names as the NSA has enough information in their databases.

We had great culinary experiences at the Lock Inn, eating there on three occasions - I had the Haddock fish and chips, the grilled salmon in hollandaise sauce and the roasted lamb and all were wonderful.

My suggestion is, if you are trying to figure out how long to stay at the Abbey, choose longer as opposed to shorter. We stayed five days and didn't want to leave. Have fun!

Family van Wolferen, Boven-Leeuwen The Netherlands

This was the most beautifull place that we ever stayed in, the old building was very beautifull mixed up with very modern comfortable luxury, like the swimmingpool with sauna and steambath in the old chapel, the internet-room with big pooltable and tablefootbal in the former diningroom of the monks.

The appartment was very nice furnished and with all comforts you can wish.

Fort Augustus is a beautifull village with nice places to eat and also great walking path's.

We will come back in the future and reccomend everyone to go to the Livingstone Appartment.

Thank you Sue,

We have had one of the most beautifull holiday's with our family ever.

Best regards, Grad, Jacinta, Pim and Sjors van Wolferen

Totally impressed! Excellent area to enjoy and from which to explore other sites in Scotland!

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!! By far (and I mean that in astrological distances) it was the BEST place we stayed. We were hard pressed to even leave the place!

It was an excellent site from which to adventure into other areas in the highlands--Skye, Inverness, etc.

This is definitely on my list of "things to share with friends going to Scotland"!

The pretty village of Fort Augustus lies on the south shore of Loch Ness, with the Caledonian Canal taking boats through the swing bridge and down into the Loch. A variety of local shops, pubs and restaurants provide everything you could require if you prefer to stay in the area rather than travel and explore. The village is a 2 minute walk from the apartment in St Benedict's Abbey, the grounds of which extend to the shoreline and offer stunning views of the Loch.

A choice of boat trips at the nearby jetty means you may take a leisurely cruise around the Loch, a trip to Urquart Castle, a ferry to Inverness or a speed boat ride. Used as a base for exploring the Scottish Highlands, the apartment is ideally situated half way between Fort William with its adventure activities and Inverness with its shops and Eden Court Arts Centre.

The Isle of Skye is only an hour away as is the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle and the romantic Cawdor Castle.

Other Activities: Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Archery, Canoeing
