The town of Governors Harbour, a mile away, has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbor. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fisherman at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, a dive shop, and a medical clinic. Friday Night Fish Fry in Governors Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together all the tourists and locals with food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.
The island of Eleuthera is famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted beaches. The island, home to just 8000 residents, is completely safe any time of the day or night. Enjoy the rare experience of picking up hitch-hikers and leaving your keys in the car wherever you go. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. There is excellent sightseeing as well. Eleuthera has vast caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small villages to explore. We hope you will enjoy our Bonefish Bay Estate, and experience all our island has to offer.
This house, the property, the location, the planning before arrival, the
attention once we arrived and while there, and as we were leaving, is a 10+.
The home owner (Michele) and the management ( Matthew) are first rate.
Michele and Matthew are the epitome of customer service. We had a few
challenges while there ( my husband became very ill with stomach flu.
Nothing he caught while there!) and not only did Michele drive us to the
doctor, she also had his prescription brought to our house from a town an
hour or more away. Couldn't have made it without her.
This estate is beautiful, even better in person. The landscaping is STUNNING and the cove this house sits above, well WOW! There were 8 of us and if we weren't in the water ( clear ocean or great pool), on the ample deck, cooking, or off premise enjoying governors harbor or surrounding towns in some way, we were gathering and laughing in the large kitchen. We all felt very at home here and will definitely be back..........very soon!
Thank you, thank you, to you both!
This place is one of a kind. Michelle is an owner who knows how to treat her customers. The house was everything we imagined and more. The pictures do not do the property justice. This house is great for a big family or group of couples. Some things to note, the bugs are bad at night. They are vicious and teeny tiny. Take bug spray with 90+ % deek. It makes a difference. Carry your own spices and snacks if you plan to cook. These are hard to find on the island. If you can ship your food in coolers, I would highly recommend it. Food on the island is good, but sometimes you just want to cook your own food. If we every return to Eleuthera, we will stay with Michelle. Words do not do justice to the care and personal attention that was given to us. We had a wonderful time and would recommend this property anytime to anyone without reservation. Thanks again Michelle for a wonderful anniversary trip.
Great family vacation spot. Great kitchen with everything one could need. Michelle is an excellent host. Three generations including two toddlers had a fine time. We enjoyed exploring different beaches each day. Lots of sand castles.
We just stayed at this lovely home for the week of Thanksgiving. It was a perfect fit for our family of 10 (6 adults and 4 children). Michele and her family were wonderful and attentive to our needs, the house was well equipped and had a great mid-island location. The photos and descriptions on line were very accurate. We enjoyed the cove as the water was shallow and calm, we were able to give the younger children more freedom. The pool and kayaks were a bonus and well used by us while there.
We also hired a chef for the week, Kaynell. She was excellent and worked with our family, not only around our request to have seafood at each dinner, but also to ensure we had something the kids would eat and did a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner (starring grilled lobster). She did almost all of our grocery shopping that week so we enjoyed not having to shop, cook or clean up afterwards!
We enjoyed the island as most of our interactions were with local people vs tourists; everyone was very helpful; and every beach we went to we had to ourselves. We also sailed one day with Bob Knaus - he was wonderful, informative and very patient with the kids wanting to "help" I also recommend a stop at Ocean Hole. This was one of our most relaxing vacations!
Late Review - We stayed in 2014 - This was our first visit to Eleuthera and won't be our last. Michele was incredibly helpful and the Agent, Matt, was great. The dishwasher broke but was quickly replaced which was great, rooms were beautiful with plenty of nice bedding and towels. Amazing views even from the toilet! we hired a boat from Horatio who dropped it off and picked it up for us, it was amazing to explore the beaches and little cays which my husband and son (hired tanks) scuba dived round whilst my daughters and I watched the dolphins playing above them! Wonderful Holiday wonderful people and Wonderful Home. Thank you Michele for sharing with us :)
We were two families (4 adults and 5 kids aged 7-14) that just completed a week's stay at Bonefish Bay and had a great time! The house was very comfortable for the nine of us and with a lovely setting on the Caribbean. We explored the sea, fished from the rocky point on the property and used the house as a great launching pad for exploring Eleuthera from top to bottom as it was our first visit to the island.
Matthew and Tara were extremely helpful during and after the rental process and Michele, the owner was very easy to work with and accommodating and helpful with any questions we had. The pool was great to have as was the air conditioning, kayaks, etc. For our group, being just a mile or so north of Governor's Harbour was a great location for being able to explore both north and south on the island.
We had several trips/adventures planned in advance but while the weather overall was great, it was windy on several days which resulted in cancelling or rescheduling some of the guided trips. We did end up taking a boat tour with Eleuthera Tours which we highly recommend. Scheduling with Kristel was easy and her husband Donald was great to have take us around. They offer several trips and all will be fun. If you're looking to do some deep sea fishing and open to driving up to Spanish Wells, we highly recommend Deek and Tweedie from Spanish Wells (look up www.fishingwithdeek). They were awesome and we caught a boatload of big fish. For eating out, we liked Rainbow Inn (for pizza night on Mondays), 1648 Grille and the Buccaneer. Da Perk was also good for breakfast. Sammy and the pool/bar scene at Sky Beach Club was fun as well.
Highlights for our group were having a dolphin join us for a swim and riding the waves one day at the beach by Sky Beach Club, gathering up starfish at bonefish bay at low tide, exploring the many beaches on both sides of the island, visiting Queen's Bath, fishing up near Spanish Wells and generally just enjoying the friendliness of the people on Eleuthera.
All in all, we highly recommend renting with Matthew and renting Bonefish Bay. We had an awesome week and would be more than happy to go back again!!
Back in early 2015 my wife and I prepared for our annual February 2016 vacation rental. We viewed the photographs and descriptions of various properties via Google. Selecting and eventually arriving at Bonefish Bay, Eleuthera in the Bahamas, they were NOT at all of what we encountered. If we had known, we would have selected another location.
Caveat emptor? That is difficult to comprehend when it comes to foreign vacation rentals. A customer is dependent upon the brochures with their colorful photographs and glowing verbal amenities, and if possible, entrusting a broker, if one is knowledgeable about all of their rental properties. This was not the case. Most of the photographs and many of the descriptions were very misleading. A cracked sink, a cracked toilet top, its disgusting seat. The docks and dockage were unrealistically described. And it continues.
“An abundance of glass provides extensive and unobstructed beach, ocean and sunset views from every room.” “Modern kitchen, with a beautiful ocean view.” “One guest bedroom w/queen bed has direct ocean views.” “The grand patio, just off the living room, with its beautiful ocean and sunset views.” “The stunning master bedroom suite, (etc.- - -) and a direct ocean view- - -connected to a master bath where you can enjoy ocean views, etc.” Stepping outside the master bedroom door was an eighteen-inch drop.
There are NO views as depicted by the photographs and the brochures description as stated when relaxing in any of the aforementioned areas. Being an average adult in height while standing, one could not enjoy any waterfront view from any deck or room.
A “fully equipped office.” My wife required electricity to power a laptop for her voice recording equipment. There was no electrical outlet.
A “heated pool” had to be attended to by a professional service. It still did not work. The “private beach,” was cluttered with seaweed after a storm. The owner made it well known how an effort was expended to correct these two important matters, AFTER we arrived. The house phone did not work, a service had to be contacted, but they accomplished nothing. The owner provided a new cell phone. This was AFTER we arrived.
These problems, and many, many more, collectively exceeded any that we have had with 18 rental properties over the past 26 years while vacationing in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We were very disillusioned and deeply regretted this rental.
