Located just 20 mins from Prades, near the medieval Catalan village of Evol (listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France) and backing onto the Jujols nature reserve with numerous mountain walks starting right outside the front door (including the renowned Cami Ramader), this house is ideal for walkers and nature lovers. Pick cherries, walnuts or apples in the orchard, relax or fish in the trout stream, and play boules or table tennis! Fully equipped and heated, with 3 shower/bathrooms (including 2 ensuite), this house can be rented at any time of the year. Enjoy the stunning views across the valley, sit on the terrace as you watch the evening sun sink over the mountains or curl up in front of the inglenook fireplace. Stretch out on the Mediterranean beaches, challenge yourself at the Pyrenean ski resorts both only 45 mins away, pamper yourself at the St Thomas spa (20 mins) or try adventure activities (high ropes, white water rafting etc) at Maquixanes (30 mins).
Places of Interest: Mont Canigou - this mountain peak, although not the highest of the eastern Pyrénées, is a mystical and mythical mountain for the Catalans. Can be climbed from mid-May by landrover / 4x4 or two hours on foot.
Villefranche-de-Conflent - an historic town surrounded by defensive walls is a fort built by Louis Vauban in the 17th century and is well worth a visit. Fort Liberia looks down on the fortified town and there is a connecting tunnel between the two.
Mont Louis - another fortified town, higher up into the mountains with superb views over the foothills as they descend to the Mediterranean. Near to Mont Louis is the 'Fort Solar' - one of the largest solar powered electricity stations in Europe, with its own visitor centre.
Not too far away is the Fort of Salses constructed in the 15th century, or take a visit to Carcassonne a fortified city in Cathar country.
Activities: Excellent walking and hiking country. There are two Randonnées (or signposted footpaths) that pass the front door. Ask at the local Syndicat d'Initiative or tourist office in Olette. Walking maps are available in bookshops, 'tabacs' and petrol stations.
Trout fishing in the stream in front of the house (permit available at the 'tabac' in Olette) or the fishing lake near Olette.
A full range of watersports (sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving) take place all along the Vermeille coast (Canet Plage etc) and there is also windsurfing on the mountain lakes at Les Angles.
All winter sports (skiiing, snowboarding, husky sled rides, ice skating etc) at the ski stations of the Pyrenees. Font Romeu and Les Angles are especially good for their range of activities and children's facilities, including ski schools with English-speaking instructors.
There is an adventure activity centre in Maquixanes (30 mins) with white water rafting, high-rope walks / climbs through the trees and canoeing.
Restaurents & Hotels: Casa del Sol - Evol
Café de l'Houstalet - Olette
La Fontaine Auberge - Olette
Visit the Templiers bar in Collioure where Picasso sat.
There are many excellent restaurants in Prades, Villefranche, Thuir, Vernet-les-Bains, Port Vendres, Céret etc as well as wonderful village bars serving simple 'family' meals.
Try the Auberge de Jujols for spectacular views over the valley - but make sure that you call to book a table first!
After skiiing or a visit to the mountains, try one of many excellent restaurants / hotels in Font Romeu - all types of cuisine and a full range of prices from the simple to the simply luxurious!
If you are desperate for fast food, there is even a McDonald's in Prades! But the pizza vans are much better quality and value!
Thank you for the use of your house in Thuir d’Evol. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The views from the bedroom windows when you wake up are lovely. We have written some notes in your visitors’ book for the benefit of people following us.
We managed to drive both the road up to the Chalet des Cortales (Canigou) and the road up to Col de Portus (from Thuir d’Evol). In both cases we also enjoyed the wonderful walks from the car parks.
In addition we have enjoyed a wine tasting day, explored the immediate surroundings including Evol, the old chapel and ruined castle and up the track above the house; used the yellow train to get to Mont Louis to view the solar furnace, a great walk from Jujols; visited the Priory at Serrabonne; dined in La Vigatane in Canet village (recommended); visited the abbey of Saint Michel de Cuxa; explored Villefranche and walked up to view Fort Liberia; walked the Gorge de la Carança, visited Castelnou; visited Vernet les Bains and Casteil and walked up to the Abbey of St Martin le Canigou.
We had very good journeys each way, we made very good time, and actually arrived earlier than I had originally estimated.
Once again, thank you very much for use of the lovely house.
We really enjoyed our stay at this property. The accommodation was more than adequate for our needs - nothing fancy but well-equipped and functional. It was great value-for-money and certainly not over-priced - some of the places we thought about were charging twice as much! The house is in a wonderful location and we enjoyed some great walks into the mountains and down to Olette. Breakfast on the bar terrace in Olette on a sunny morning was lovely. We also had some lovely meals on the terrace, watching the sunset. Although its tempting just to sit and read (e.g. beside the river), make sure you get out and about because there are some fabulous places to visit - Villefranche, Prade market, St Thomas les Bains, Mont Louis etc. If you have time, its also worth driving down to the coast - the beaches are great but the small ports are better for restaurants (e.g. Port Vendres). We also got up early one day and had a full day in Barcelona (you can get there in under 3 hours). Like the other reviews have said, the neighbours are really friendly and were very patient with our basic French! The tourist office in Olette (in the corner of the square) has some helpful information. Driving down, we followed the owner's advice - got an early ferry and then went via the Viaduc de Millau / Massif Central motorway - it was a lovely drive, not at all crowded and no tolls to pay (except to cross the Viaduc) - so much better than the Lyons motorway route! If you are confident, you can drive around the peripheric in Paris (to get from the Calais motorway to the Orleans motorway - which links to the Massif Central) or you can cut around Paris to get to the motorway that goes down through the centre of France. The whole drive took us a full day (using 2 drivers) but it is such a lovely, relaxing route that we did not feel at all tired! Others we met locally had flown down - but said that car hire in Spain (e.g. from Gerona airport) is cheaper than in France (e.g. from Perpignan airport) and you can then take the car from Spain into France (but check with the car hire company as this is only what we were told - we have not done this - yet!). We had a great holiday and can thoroughly recommend this house as a great base to explore a beautiful part of France.
We chose this location for the great walks and were not disappointed. I have completed the Biarritz/Santiago route as well as the Atlantic/Mediterranean route but still found the mountain walks in this area really enjoyable. The house is in a beautiful location and provide perfectly adequate accommodation at a reasonable price. Make the most of the outdoors during your stay - there are easy walks (e.g. over the mountainside down to Olette) or more challenging ones (e.g. up the footpath to the mill or follow the road up to the chateau) or full-on hikes (e.g. up to the lakes). House well-equipped, not luxurious but very comfortable. Talk to the neighbours - they're great - really friendly. Try small restaurant /cafe in Evol (Casa del Sol) and don't miss the market in Prades. Little Yellow Train is great fun (especially return/downhill trip) but at busiest times its best to get on in Villefranche to guarantee a seat in the open-air carriage. We really enjoyed our stay.
We had a fabulous time at this great house in a superb mountain location. It was wonderfully quiet but easy to get to some great activities for the family. We especially enjoyed the castle at Villefranche and the activity centre at Marquixanes. We hadn't played table tennis for years and had great fun in the evenings leaping around the courtyard! The accommodation really suited our family needs - not over smart or modern but more than adequate for the price we paid. Really good value.
This house is in a great location, particularly for walkers and those wanting to gain a proper experience of rural France. The property has loads of character and is very spacious. The neighbours are really friendly, so please don't be afraid to try out your French (if it's not your native tongue!).
There are plenty of places to visit within an hour or so by car.
It really is a beautiful spot. The house suited our needs well, and despite the lack of glasses we took full advantage of the great local wines and lovely French produce!
We followed the circular walk from the house, which was great, but challenging on a hot day, as well as several others in the area. We particularly liked Vernet-les-Bains, walking up to St. Martin-du Canigou, and to the waterfalls
The coast was also a treat, the beaches were delightful.
45 mins from Pyrenean ski resorts, 45 mins from the beaches of the Mediterranean. This spacious house nestles in the Pyrenean foothills alongside a trout stream & the Cami Ramader, a beautiful trail leading into the mountains. At the end of a lane leading from Evol (classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France), only 3 kms from Olette (catch the Little Yellow Train down VIllefranche and Perpignan or up to Mont Louis/Latour de Carol). Enjoy early croissants on the elevated terrace of the local café or the friendly service from the local Catalan people in Olette (supermarket, weekly market, tabac, hairdresser, banking facilities, etc). Lounge in the thermal baths at St Thomas with its full spa facilities (steam rooms, massage, beauty therapies) or visit the fortified town of Villefranche. Don’t miss the huge market at Prades (Tuesday) for fabulous local delicacies, handicrafts and bargain fabrics or simply sit at a bar in the square and enjoy the spectacle!

Ski: There are nine ski stations within an hour's drive of the house. The largest & nearest is the resort of Font Romeu with its ice rink, numerous ski lifts, snow guns and a skiable route suitable for all to Pyrénées 2000, another ski station. Wonderful views from Roc de la Calme at 2200 metres. If you wish to travel a little closer to Spain then try Port Puymorens with its rugged beauty. All nine ski satations are served with English-speaking ski schools.
Other resorts include the twin stations of Cambre d'Aze Eyne & Cambre St Pierre.
Puigmal 2600 has lovely long trail to a restaurant and the opportunity to sunbathe and recouperate from the ardours of skiing. The magnificient resort of Les Angles also has the added attraction of an ice rink and great facilities for children.
At every resort, there are plenty of green and blue runs for the novice as well as red and black for the more experienced.
