Why Michael Sloan chose Badger Creek
A lesson learnt from the slate house. As we drove up the dirt road we got more and more excited, the forest was getting thicker and the tree ferns larger, when a lyrebird ran across the road in front of us I looked at my wife Laurel and said I love this place and we haven't even seen it yet. For the last eight years we have called this property our second home, It's where I recovered after by battle with cancer there, chemo sucks but it was the ideal place to recuperate. It's also where I where I wrote my book about investing in property. We call the home Olivia's in the forest, after Laurels mother who passed away a while back. Using her name all the time keeps her a bit closer to our hearts. The locals though call it the slate house because of its unique design, unique in Australia anyway. It was built in the mid 1980's and is based on homes from the Lake District in the UK, the external walls are built with slate. Thousands of pieces of slate all different sizes like the ultimate jigsaw puzzle. We collect our water from a creek and a generator charges a bank of batteries that give us power for the house. This is a special house that holds many fond memories for people over the last 30 years. It was the way they held those memories close to them got me thinking about ownership and property. We used to say we owned Olivia's as well as our other properties but this house made me realise we don't really own any of them. We are just the custodians; it's just our turn for the property to be in our name for a while? Sure there can be issues, with the lyrebird with its long claws digging up every new plant within 24 hours of us putting it in, never mind the deer eating whatever they like. But that is all a small price to pay for living in such a beautiful spot. After 8 years it is time to spend more time in the city with the kids and grandkids We hope love Olivia's as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
The Forest is just beautiful, this may sound odd but count yourself lucky if it is going to rain during your stay. The forest is just stunning when it rains and the clouds settle, as a friend of our said when they first visited in the winter "i think i have died and gone to heaven" We hope have the opportunity to stay at Olivia's and love it as much as we do.

Friends and I had the most gorgeous weekend nestled in the forest at Olivia's. We woke to bird song each morning and enjoyed watching the sunset on the verandah, warmed by the fire. The house is so well appointed and cosy. We can't wait to come back for the next stay and have already agreed to making this an annual event. I highly recommend this wonderful place.
3 Ladies at Olivia's in the Forrest
We had a wonderful time right from the minute we opened the door. What a beautiful house we stepped into, it felt like a home, it was beautiful and set so lovely in the forest. Everything on entry was perfectly displayed and clean and the house itself is beautiful even having the smell of an open fire having been been burnt previously was fantastic. The beds were wonderful and comfortable, the linen was beautiful and the 5 star tiuch with soft robes and fluffy hit water bittles topped it off. Beautiful breakfast supplies left and just a fantastic relaxing time was has by all. Everything was just perfect and we will be coming back again thank you so much, what a fantastic stay at such a beautiful property and home thank you again.
A magical setting for this cosy house. Generous attention to detail.
We loved sitting outside amongst the trees, feeling as though we were in the middle of a deep forest. The house was warm, beautifully presented and we lacked for nothing. A generous amount of towels, crockery and bathrobes made staying in Olivia’s a delight.
Pure tranquility amongst the trees
My husband and I stayed for our 10th Wedding Anniversary and we couldn’t have had a more special experience than at Olivia’s. We were obviously guided to the right place. Everything was perfect for us. We are so grateful for this unique and magical experience that Michael and Laurel offer, thank you from our hearts to yours.
Cosy cottage getaway
We absolutely loved this home, the photos don't do it justice! the rooms are spacious and the spaces are bigger than the photos suggest. We loved the attention to detail (maps of the area, hiking poles, generous breakfast provisions, so many games). We would highly recommend this property, we'll definitely be coming back!
Olivia's is just a 10 minute drive to Healesville.
