Of the 130 units at the Kona Reef, less than a dozen have air conditioning throughout the unit. Others have a wall AC unit in the living room, but this condo has AC for the entire unit including the bedroom. While it is cooler at night, the added benefit of a bedroom that is air conditioned can be very important on hot evenings.
This unit as well as our other condos are clean, comfortable, modern, recently remodeled throughout and completely suitable for a stay from just a few days to a month or more, with full kitchens equipped with full size appliances and all cookware and dining utensils; in-unit washer-dryers; king size beds; air conditioning as well as ceiling fans; covered lanais; large TVs with DVD players and cable, and free high speed DSL Internet with Wi-Fi and FREE long distance calling throughout Hawaii, US mainland and Canada.
The oceanfront Kona Reef Resort is without a doubt the most convenient location in Kailua-Kona; just two blocks to town, and a wonderful resort for a vacation. You can easily walk to the shops or restaurants, so you do not need to drive every time you want to go to town. Plus the resort is just 30 feet from the water with a beautiful ocean-side pool and spa; large, outdoor gas grills in the adjacent pool cabana, and a nice sandy beach just a few steps away where you can swim or just relax. It’s real convenience and value.

We own 2 - 1 bedroom vacation rental condos at the Kona Reef and manage four 2 bedroom units and 21 other 1 bedroom units. All units are remodeled for convenience of our guests. Dia and Ken frequently stay in each of our units. We are semi retired and Ken is active in the real estate business. He is licensed as a broker in Hawaii. Could have been cleaner..
The location is great, view is great, fairly well equipped - but dishwasher was broken, nice size lanai, livingroom and kitchen. Really small bathroom and bedroom - hardly room for one suitcase, never mind two. Bathroom tiny and no room to put anything on counter. Kitchen and livingroom were pretty clean, bedroom was OK, but the bathroom.. someone needs to learn to use a scrub brush!

I love this place, and the owners are amazing. It is so close to town and everything. We stay here every year.
Great location and facility, close to shops and restaurants. A little dated but could be easy fix.
The location and facilities at Kona Reef are awesome. A short walk to restaurants and shops, and a central location to many attractions on the west coast makes this facility great. The pool and hot tub are very enjoyable and they have a great barbecue area. The sunsets from the front lawn were breathtaking! The unit itself (C-11) is a little dated and I felt it wasn't cleaned very well before our arrival. Sinks and tubs could have used a good scrubbing, and the floors could have been cleaner. Furniture was nice rattan with colorful cushions. The other thing I would address is the profusion of decorations and pictures throughout the unit. The majority of the pictures hanging on the walls were poor quality and there were just too many of them. Same goes for the silk flower arrangements and other items on horizontal surfaces. The flowers were dusty and limp and should just be removed. The other kitschy item could be drastically reduced. Sometimes less is more and they were all taking up prime real estate for our own items. I also felt the unit wasn't well-stocked compared to other VRBOs that we've stayed in. Absolutely nothing in the fridge (I usually find leftover condiments from previous guests), and no cleaning products. There was salt and pepper and some very old seasonings. We were staying 2 weeks and there was a charge for cleaning mid-stay so it would have been nice to have something I could use to clean it myself besides the broom. All that being said, we had a lovely stay and we did enjoy Kona Reef!

Stayed at Kona Reef for a few days. The complex was very nice. My only complaint would be that the unit we stayed in wasn't as clean as I would have hoped for and should be updated inside. The bathroom toilet around the bottom wasn't cleaned, the front of the microwave wasn't cleaned. The unit could use a painting and updated such as the bathroom/shower taps, etc.
Thank you for giving feedback. It would have been nice to let us know about any deficiency on cleaning as we would have had the cleaner re-do it immediately. It is rare, but on occasion a cleaner does not do the thorough job that is expected, and in those instances the cleaner will return and do it properly. Thanks for letting us know.
Location location location!
Great little condo in superb location of Kailua Kona. We were on our honeymoon and island hopping. We loved the outdoor amenities of this complex. Fantastic pool! The only drawback was the bathroom. Needs a complete overhaul and updating and good clean. Kitchen needs updating. Other than that great.
Thank you for your comments, many upgrades were made in the last few years since your stay in 2014, and reviews from 2016 and 2015 indicate the present condition. We are always making improvements.
Volcano is 92 miles south, about 2 1/2 hours driving time. Waterfalls and botanical gardens are on the way to Hilo. Drive time to Hilo is around 2 hours taking northern route, and about 3 hours taking southern route.
