Why James Wynhausen chose Elmwood
Quiet and secluded, this unit has a private entrance and access to a long driveway. Once you are here, you may not want to drive again! The neighborhood is very walkable. Cal Berkeley is also within walking distance
What makes this Apartment unique
Location, Location, location! Beautiful walkable neighborhood with amazing shops and restaurants. Check out the pictures!

Everything we needed for family visiting, even off street parking! Although the floor plan is a bit strange (you walk through the bathroom to get to the kitchen), this property was perfect. The small kitchen looks out to the back garden and is very private. Easy access to the Elmwood shopping (and eating !) district. Only a few steps up to the apartment, but with a railing - great for our elder guest. Recommended!
This was the second time we have stayed here. We enjoy the quietness of the neighborhood and the fact you can walk easily to shops and restaurants. I’m sure if this unit is available the next time we are in Berkeley we will be back.
Nice place to stay
Great location. Came with everything you would need. Quiet and comfortable even though the layout was a little different.
Great neighborhood, but the rental was not quiet and it was far from elegant
We loved the beautiful location of this property in Berkeley’s Elmwood neighborhood, but if we had been given a more accurate description of what awaited us, we would never have rented this apartment. It is not “elegant” by any means: the old wooden blinds on the windows are difficult to use; some of the molding and paint is crumbling; and the bathroom’s location between the bedroom and kitchen is very awkward. Nor is the property “quiet”: there was often noise through the walls and ceiling. Although the contract specified the landlord’s use of the washer and dryer “with prior notice,” we were not always told when these appliances in our kitchen would be used. It was unsettling to feel like someone was coming in and out without our permission, and it was annoying to find others’ things in the washer: I wound up cleaning dirty lint traps, as well as drying and folding three loads of the owners' sheets, towels, and washcloths myself. Early in our stay, our laundry was mistakenly taken by the owners with their own wash. Finally, there was a persistent odor in the apartment that did not clear out, perhaps because the kitchen (and, incidentally, the bathroom) had not been cleaned very well after the previous renters: the area next to the kitchen sink was filthy; the oven floor contained crumbs and grease; the silverware drawer contained crumbs; there were crumbs under the toaster and microwave; and the rug was so dirty we put it out of sight. As for a way to drain dishes, all that was provided was a bamboo mat that was also far from clean. Under these circumstances, we did not feel comfortable using the kitchen for anything more than storing and eating fruit and snacks. Though the landlord brought back his “cleaning crew” for a second go at the place after we complained about the lack of cleanliness, all they seem to have addressed was the area next to the sink. I wound up doing a through cleaning of the place several days into our stay; this was not how I imagined my vacation. We have rented vrbo and airbnb properties for years; this is the first one that was a disappointment. Although the landlord was a nice person and tried to be helpful, we would not return to this apartment.
Charming, small apartment in a great location
This was the perfect location for our visit to see our son graduate from Berkeley. It's a very short walk from great restaurants, etc in Elmwood. It was very clean, the owner was very kind, and the price reasonable. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was very small and didn't be conducive to making large meals, but we only made coffee and had cereal there. (Would have loved a larger coffee pot. ) The layout is slightly awkward, as one needs to go through the bathroom to get from bedroom to kitchen. Parking in the driveway was very convenient & there was plenty of street parking as well. Overall, it was a good experience and we would return.
The apartment was clean and adequately appointed. The location in Elmwood is great.
The owner is responsive. Helpful. There is a washer and dryer in the well-lighted kitchen. A good sized TV. Good comfortable bed and good heating. In general, I would stay there again.
Located in the Elmwood District of Berkeley. This is a wonderful neighborhood and a perfect place for visiting CAL Parents and fans. Prime East Bay location, situated within 5 minute walking distance of College Avenue (College & Ashby) and its diverse shops, cafe's and restaurants. UC Berkeley and the Claremont Hotel are also within walking distance. Close to major bus lines, 15 minute walk to BART.
