Who would have thought such precious wilderness would exist just over an hour from the centre of Adelaide? Muntiri Lodge Eco Retreat is a unique combination of heritage wilderness, quality accommodation and farm stay, applying the principals of sustainability to good living.
Relax in style in our own private conservation park where your perfect accommodation has been created with the natural environment in mind. Designed by local Fleurieu architects Angus and Dowie, Muntiri Lodge is a delightful rammed-earth cottage that has been constructed to the finest ecological principals to sit in harmony with its surroundings, with interiors that take their inspiration from its pristine country setting.
The cottage has an airy open plan with a large lounge/diner/kitchen and a master bedroom hidden behind a rammed earth modesty wall. A separate bedroom (two single beds), bathroom, toilet and laundry complete the accommodation.
The thermal mass of rammed earth keeps the cottage cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Filtered rainwater, a log fire, gas hob and oven provide for your personal comforts and the whole property is off-grid and self-sufficient in electricity and services adequate for your personal needs and essential services.
Furniture built from renewable plantation hardwoods has been selected to enhance the natural beauty of the building and its materials. Interiors have been thoughtfully designed to create a harmonious, luxurious and romantic ambience which has been competed with fine linen, quality bedding and the personal touches of your hosts, the owners.
In summary, the property is a modern, light and spacious cottage in a tranquil and peaceful setting allowing you to make those difficult choices: relax and do nothing, jog the 3.5km sandy trail or explore the 175 acres of native woodland where you can discover rare native plants, marvel at the diversity of birdlife, see kangaroos and, if you are quiet enough, rare hopping mice, lizards, echidnas and many other native species. We have even provided a few games and some thought provoking books as alternative to television, which is really only there because you may expect it!
For the more active, the property is a short five minute drive from Clayton Bay, a quiet holiday hamlet off the beaten track. Across the water from Hindmarsh Island, Clayton Bay is a hub of the Lower Murray Wetlands which have gained prominence as a migratory bird habitat of world renown. It is also the perfect place to play in, or by, the water and even has a large area set aside for non-motorised recreation! For the day visitor the foreshore reserves provide a café, playground, picnic spots under shady trees, and pleasant walking trails around the water's edge.
A short drive in the opposite direction will take you to Milang: once a large and bustling inland port, it is now a quaint lakeside town sitting quietly across Lake Alexandrina from the Coorong. Here is where you will find the local bakery, pub and general store, beyond which a quiet country drive will take you to the Langhorne Creek wine region where you can enjoy boutique vineyards, restaurants, local providores, or simply a leisurely meal in a local café.
The Sunday markets and restaurants of Goolwa and Strathalbyn, the wines of McLaren Vale or the surf beaches of the Fleurieu are also well within reach.
With quality self-contained facilities and the unusual combination of both privacy and relaxing views, your hosts, Chris and Allie, have created a luxury eco-experience unique to the area. Mild winter days and cool summers make Muntiri Lodge ideal for the ultimate romantic couple’s getaway or a short break to simply reconnect with nature at any time of the year.
