About David Lewis
We lived primarily in San Diego until retirement. Now we spend our time at our home in Mexico, travelling in our RV, and spending at least one month in the summer and one month in the winter at Kirkwood. Kirkwood gives us the benefit of enjoying the year-around beautiful Sierras and its seasons.
David Lewis purchased this Condo in 1986
Why David Lewis chose Kirkwood
We purchased our unit when we had small children. The all-day ski school is the best we have ever seen -- you check you children in at 10:00 a.m. and the school works with them all day, provides lunch and even brings them in for hot cocoa if it is too cold. Skiing for adults is fabulous -- no lift lines and great snow due to the high altitude. Summer at Kirkwood allowed our children to experience growing up in the mountains -- lake fishing, hiking, biking and even tent camping when they were a little older.
What makes this Condo unique
Winter: Skiing, cross country skiing (nearby lake trails and open meadow trail); snow shoeing. Caroling at Christmas and Fireworks Parade at New Year's. Summer: Hiking, swimming, biking (Mountain Bike Trail), backpacking, fishing.
Sports & Adventure Activities
A PERFECT PLACE TO "HANG YOUR HAT" IN KIRKWOOD !!!!
Base Camp #21 .. This condo is exactly, & very aptly described, the name of the complex is "Base Camp" it is literally, steps away from the base of the main ski area at Kirkwood, shops, ski rentals & restaurant's. A perfect, location to "Rest Your Hat" at Kirkwood during ski season, or any other time of the year for that matter ? BaseCamp complex was built in 1972, naturally, it shows its age, but you can't tell it apart from any of the others at Kirkwood from the outside.
Prior to us staying at Kirkwood, we stayed in a new condo at Gov Camp Mt Hood, Ore. Base Camp #21 was a lot different, however, the owners have made up grades to this condo. Upgrades we identified; New above stove microwave, dish washer, stove, fridge/freezer, kitchen counter tops and flooring.
The kitchen is VERY WELL stocked, with every cookware/cutlery item needed, incl a slow cooker/crock pot, which made my wife very happy, as she loves to put the dinner in the crock pot so there's no cooking to be done at night. The dining/living rm is very spacious which is typical of older condos v newer ones, it is well appointed with a Lg 'L' shaped couch, 40"+ flat screen TV, dvd player etc, there is wireless internet which worked well, and a large beefy glass top dining table which seats 6. The kit/dining room/living room have views of the slopes and surrounding area. There is a full Bath/R downstairs with new shower, flooring, counter tops, sinks & fixtures.
Upstairs are 3 spacious bedrooms, 1 - King, 1- Queen, and one with 1- single bed and bunk beds. The Master BR is Lg with a view of the ski slopes/lifts from a big picture window you can see all the action around them. The m/bath, has 2 new separate sinks, fixtures & counter top tile. The separate shower/toilet has just been remodeled, it has beautiful tile blending into the entire floor of the bath/rm. The two other b/rms were spacious, clean with views of the slopes. The King & Queen beds (the only one's we used) are not hard or super soft, but we were very comfortable during our stay. There is no washer and drier. Heating is elec wall units, & large fire place, we had NO problem staying warm. The condo was clean when we arrived, as you would expect.
Our * rating is based upon, location, condo appointments, price, convenience/access to amenities.
A few minor upgrades would make this a 5 star location, but are not necessary & may increase rental price ?
We would definitely stay here again. Stewart & Andrea. March 2018
Old and dirty.
Property was not as advertised, dirty and not cared for. One bedroom had a pile of snot rags behind the bed. Heating system was minimal, we had a hard time keeping warm.
Perfect Spot for Skiing, Well kept and Stocked
It was so convenient, we could have lunch in the Condo. There were 6 of us, older males and college buddies on our yearly ski trip. Having the living area and kitchen on one floor with the bedrooms upstairs worked out well. It was good to know before we came that there were no washer or dryer availability so we could plan for it. Highly recommended.
Fantastic location, well kept, great visit
We had a great visit with two families. It was great being this close to the village in the summer. It would be unbelievably cool in the winter!!!!
Kitchen had all we needed to cook. Master bedroom is very big. Views of the mountain from many windows (this corner unit makes for more windows!).
It could use some updating of doors/windows. Plus the king bed and queen bed both had hard mattresses.
Again, great time overall! Would love to come again!
Convenient location and functional unit
We found Basecamp 21 to be as expected. It is an older unit that is showing a bit of wear and tear but is very functional and laid out well for use by family groups. Like most ski resort condos, it was designed for winter use, hence lot of heating options but few cooling. With 80-90 F temps during our stay, it got a bit warm until the cool night breezes arrived - as they reliably do. We suggested to the property manager that they invest in a few small fans to help with short-term summer cooling. We'd happily stay there again.
Property is equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
This is our second year returning. We would come back again.
1.5 Hours from Reno, NV Airport Other Activities: Downhill/Alpine Skiing, Rock Climbing, Sledding/Tubing, Cross Country Skiing
