Welcome to Bambooshay, St. John!
“Bambooshay” is a Creole word that means “enjoy yourself; have a good time.” Coined during Carnival season in the 1950’s, the word originates from “Bambula,” an old African dance that is carried out today through a unique “second line” dance that is performed to the beat of traditional New Orleans jazz. Revelers during carnival today are often heard yelling out “Bambooshay!” as they partake in the festivities of the season.
In a single word, Bambooshay embodies the spirit and attitude that we have found from the Caribbean to New Orleans, and we truly hope you will enjoy yourself and have a great time on St. John. Bambooshay!
Guests arrive at Cruz Bay, where the ferry docks, and will need to rent a car to continue on to the privacy of the villa.
Two roads beckon. The North Shore Road, which winds past Trunk Bay and many other tropical beaches that are ideal for snorkeling and swimming, and Centerline Road, which winds along the highlands, offering vistas of Coral Bay and the British Virgin Islands.
Built for two, the villa has one bedroom (and a self-inflating mattress for an additional visitor), a living room and a modern bath. The kitchen is equipped with a gas range, BBQ grill, refrigerator, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster and blender and is stocked with pots and pans. Ceiling fans and French doors keep the interior cool.
Perhaps best of all, the villa has an expansive deck with an outdoor shower, and is great for al fresco dining, sunbathing, star gazing or getting a massage. A big hammock for two provides a good place for napping, reading or enjoying the view.
If you feel more like exploring, take an easy 8-minute walk down Seagrape Hill to enjoy the restaurants and shops of Coral Bay. Hike along the nearby Johnny Horn Trail or visit the Moravian church at the foot of Seagrape Hill. The St. John National Park's beaches are just a short drive away.
Book your trip today. St. John awaits you.

We looked all over the Caribbean and ended up choosing St. John for many reasons: pristine beaches, 2/3 of the island is US National Park (protected from over development), US property rights and contract law. St. John is a magical place that captured our hearts and we hope to retire here one day soon!
It was just the right size for us - and how refreshing it was to have no TV.
Yay! The view was spectacular, and that hammock could induce comas, I
We also loved Coral Bay, the food, snorkeling, people, pace, etc. What a great
spot. Those beaches were amazing! Anyway, we loved St. John. What a special
place. It was a great vacation--thanks!
My husband and I went there for our wedding/honeymoon.
We had an incredible time. They view is amazing. At night you can hear the music from a bar on the bay. It was magical. The main grocery store is next to where the ferries are. Word of advice is to stock up before heading here. It was absolutely beautiful.
We spent a week at Bambooshay for our 10th Anniversary and are so glad we did. The view from the spacious deck couldn't be beat and star gazing at night from the hot tub was amazing. We loved how private it felt though we were just up the hill from shops and restaurants. The inside was spacious, clean and nicely decorated though most of our time was spent outside. Having use of the beach towels, cooler, chairs and snorkel gear was fantastic. Others have mentioned mosquitos. We just kept the screen doors closed at all times and had no issues with them, even on the deck. When we arrived Tom was so friendly and helpful. It was nice knowing we could call him if we had any problems but we didn't need to. Coral Bay is great! So peaceful but still lots of restaurants and beaches to explore. Miss Lucy's and Concordia cafe were our favorites on that side of the island. We have so many memories from our visit and hope to stay at Bambooshay when we return. Do rent a jeep- the hills on the island make it a must!
What a great time my husband and I had at bambooshayvilla. It was the best idea to stay on the quiet side of the island. The house had everything you would need to making breakfast each morning to cocktails at night. The view alone is worth the stay not to mention the hot tub is an added bonus for star gazing at night. Best tip would be take a visit to Francis bay beach quiet beautiful and we saw turtles, many fish and a huge 6 foot sting ray on top of other rays. Just make sure at night you have the fans going or the net as masquitos can be a pain. We've been lots of tropical places including all of Hawaii but yet have decided this will be our one stop tropical stop for the future with family and friends just beautiful, quiet, and relaxing a little slice of national park heaven!!
My husband and I enjoyed celebrating our 10 year anniversary with a week of quiet, relaxation in St. John. We fell in love with Coral Bay- and Bambooshay was perfect for us. Amazing location with excellent views and great amenities for a great vacation. We went into Cruz Bay a few times and always returned to Coral Bay thankful that this was were we were staying. Much more relaxed, peaceful, secluded. The villa had a kitchen that had all the cooking appliances and dishes that we needed. We went by the grocery store before arriving and stocked the refrigerator...and were surprised by the staple items that were fresh and already in the refrigerator. We snorkeled each day on a new beach. The reviews and info Scott and Lori have given are great tour guides. We were intrigued by the island wild life and enjoyed watching donkey's, deer, goats, chickens, and more cross the road at anytime! The beauty of the island was enough to make us want to return one day...maybe with our children next time! Thank you for an amazing week that we will never forget!
My fiancé and I just returned from our 9 night stay at Bambooshay. The cottage is beautiful. The private location overlooking Coral Bay is magnificent. We loved morning coffee out on the deck watching the sun light up the eastern shore of Coral Bay. I would give it 5 stars except for one thing: air conditioning in the bedroom. We love to snorkel in the morning then come back for an afternoon nap. The afternoon sun hits directly on the bedroom making it too hot. Night sleeping is not an issue. Just would have liked an afternoon nap. I also don't want to be over critical. We loved Bambooshay and would recommend it to fellow travelers.
My husband and I spent a week here for our second anniversary. We'd visited Coral Bay for our honeymoon and were excited to return. Bambooshay was the perfect place to have as our home base throughout the week. Everything was exactly as it was described in the online post and the view was awesome! We spent many nights on the hammock relaxing after a long day of hiking, snorkeling or exploring the island.
A few small things to note that didn't detract at all from our overall experience: the knives in the knife block are pretty dull, would have been great if they were sharper. Also, there was almost no pantry staples beyond salt & pepper. Some other spices & dried herbs, plus some olive oil, would have been great!
St. John Recommendations
All of the beaches along the north shore are awesome and if you have time, you should stop to see all of them that you can. Our favorites are the ones less travelled; farther away from town (Cruz Bay or “Love City” as it is known). Our favorite beach is probably Francis followed closely behind by Maho. Both are along the north shore and are closest in proximity to Bambooshay. Francis is relatively secluded and is usually one of the least crowded beaches along the north shore. The angle of the bay blocks most of the waves and the soft sand extends well out into the water with a gentle sloping angle. There are lots of little fish that will swim all around you and pelicans enjoy swooping in and dining on the smaller ones from time to time. Once you park your car and walk out facing the water just turn to the right and walk down to find a spot to set your chairs and towels. Also, if you stand still in the water you will find that the fish will come up to you and swim around your feet. Plus if you have some bread/chips/crackers you can feed them and they will be all around you in no time.
Maho is a lot like Francis but is right off the north shore road so it’s easy to get in/out; especially if you’re carrying heavy coolers, etc.
Trunk Bay has an underwater snorkeling trail that’s pretty cool. This beach makes a lot of magazine covers and it often named as one of the top 10 beaches in their surveys.
Honeymoon Beach is a really nice beach close to Cruz Bay. To get to it, you can pay to park at Caneel Bay (the upscale Rosewood resort) or you can park at the Parks and Wildlife office near the dock and hike across. Take water if you hike! It’s about a 30 minute hike.
Ms. Vie’s beach is another good one. It’s facing South and if wind/swells are affecting the beaches on the north shore, this is a good alternative. You have to pay Ms. Vie $2 for the privilege of using her beach, but it’s worth it. While you are there make sure to try her garlic chicken and johnny cakes with honey.
Salt Pond also faces the south shore and is a very nice spot. Take your snorkel gear if you go here to see turtles, bright corals and a ray or two. It’s a pretty long hike downhill so you’ll want to lighten your cooler before hiking back to your car.
If you are really adventurous, check out Lameshur bay on the south shore. You HAVE to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get there. It’s a very rough dirt road, but you may have the entire beach to yourself and it, like all the others, is beautiful once you get there.
Where to Eat
Our favorite spot in Coral Bay is Aqua Bistro. Be sure to ask if MJ is cooking! He is a very good chef from Boston and everything he makes is really good. If you’re in the mood for a steak, he cuts his own.
You will inevitably end up at Skinny Legs. They have awesome hamburgers. They don’t have a fryer, so you get chips with it. This is one of our favorite spots to hang out with our local friends.
Island Blues is bar food, but pretty good as well. They have live music a few nights every week and it has a great view right on Coral Bay.
Shipwreck Landing - Good conch fritters and drinks!
Miss Lucy’s – awesome brunch on Sundays, very nice lunch menu as well. If you happen to be there during the monthly full moon party, you should check that out.
If you want a more upscale experience, try Sweet Plantains. The owner is famous for her curries, but everything is well prepared and very good. You need a reservation to go here.
If you make it to Cruz Bay, you have to check out Woody’s Seafood Saloon. It’s a favorite haunt of Kenny Chesney who owns a couple of houses on the island. One of our favorite restaurants on St. John is also in Cruz Bay – Lime Inn. Very good food and their whole jerked fresh snapper is excellent. They have a few parking spots reserved right out front. Parking spots are rare in Cruz Bay so that’s a real benefit.
If you head over to Mongoose Junction they have a little restaurant called Sun Dog Café and while it may only be a few patio tables and a tiny shack where they cook, they produce some nice lunch time food and afternoon snacks.
Things to Do
Snorkeling – Definitely go to Leinster Bay and Waterlemon Cay. You park at the Anaberg Sugar Mill and hike about a mile along the beach to get there. It’s our favorite snorkeling spot on the island with brilliant corals, turtles, squid, tons of reef fish and the sea floor is covered with golden starfish! You can rent gear from Crabby’s in Coral Bay for a few bucks a day.
