Vacation on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm and stay in our Pond House, on the shore of one of the most beautiful ponds you can imagine. Children and adults enjoy fishing, hiking the woodland trails, watching the constant activities of nature around the pond, watching the horses and cattle, and horseback riding with our neighbors at Oakland Heights. Newsflash: We just added a fantastic rope swing near the Pond House, and it will hold large adults!
The Pond House has two bedrooms (one queen, one bunk bed with double bed on bottom), plus a den with queen-sized pull-out couch. It is professionally decorated and altogether charming.
The best feature, however, is the screened back deck overlooking the gorgeous pond.
Be sure to visit the farm's website using the link at the foot of this listing. Also see our Milker's Cottage (vrbo #766635), Manor House (vrbo #90926) and Servants' Cottage (vrbo #442721). These are all on the same farm. The Milker's cottage is similar in size and price to the Pond House, so if the Pond House shows unavailable, please be sure to check the Milker's Cottage.
My wife and I live in Virginia Beach, where we have been buying and rehabbing run down properties for many years. In 2003, I was looking for a small 'getaway' property close to the mountains. I overshot and ended up purchasing a rundown old horse farm (584 acres), with three houses and two big barns. After 18 months of rehab work, we opened the houses for guests.
Keith Cuthrell purchased this cottage in 2003
The Charlottesville area is one of the most beautiful parts of America. The landscape is just wonderful. You enjoy all the amenities of civilization, but in an area that is rural and dotted with small towns and villages. There is a reason why Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Governor Barbour, James Monroe and many other historical figures chose to live in this area, and why a number of modern jet setters have hideaways in the area today.
We love the back porch and pond. Its one of the most pleasant places on earth. The table and chairs out there get lots of use, both at mealtimes and whenever we wish to read or write. Our grandchildren love to stay at the Pond House because its so easy to step out the door and down to the edge of the pond, where they see lots of pond life (turtles, geese, fish and minnows, dragonflies, frogs, crayfish, red-winged blackbirds, hawks & eagles (yes we have golden eagles), etc.) and where they can depend on the fish to bite.
To celebrate M_______'s 60th birthday, we chose the Pond House. It was so relaxing and peaceful. The guys enjoyed fishing, while the ladies rode bikes and interacted with the horses. Seeing the baby horse was a highlight! The wineries were awesome, especially Barboursville! This is exactly what we needed!
All around excellent. Staff was very nice and property was well equipped.
The Pond house is beautifully set by a pond. The attractions are the hikes in the woods, the horse paddocks to say hi to horses (bring carrots and apples), and the serenity of it all.
The house is nicely decorated, and well appointed. There is wood for the fire in the evening, so the hosts are thoughtful.
I marked down two stars because of the following:
(1) the property listing says it has a hot tub, which is true, but the hot tub is at the manor house up the road a ways, and reserved for the guests of the Manor. So, its not very practical in the winter.
(2) Most important. The property listing says Wifi, but again that is for the manor house, and not always available for the Pond house. We expected to use it but were told it was not available.
Our stay at The Pond House was wonderful and just what we needed to relax and unwind. The horses were the lucky ones while we were there, plenty of apples and carrots were enjoyed by them. The golf cart was a great addition to exploring the property. A wonderful weekend indeed.
We (myself, my husband, 2 children and our puppy) stayed at the farm for 6 nights. From the minute we drove in we thought we died and went to Heaven! The Pond House was beautiful, the horses, the farm, the pond, the woods, the view, all so beautiful. As well, the owner, Keith, the hostess, Katie and the groundskeeper, Kenny were all so nice. We fished every day, my husband caught a few big bass and one huge one. Went horseback riding nearby, went sight-seeing among other things. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and can't wait to return next summer. Thank you for a wonderful place to make memories that will last a lifetime.
My daughters and I recently enjoyed two idyllic days on the farm. We stayed in the Pond House, and
everything about our stay was perfect. My youngest daughter enjoyed fishing, exploring the farm and the woods in the golf cart, visiting the horses in the fields and the barn, smores on the fire pit at night (Keith even thoughtfully left firewood for our use) and playing outdoors! My city-slicker teenager enjoyed resting and reading in the clean, comfortable and well equipped house (she even had Wi-Fi!), relaxing under the stars in the hot tub and even swinging away on the two rope swings. The farm brought me back to my childhood - it was so great to be outdoors, and I haven't seen that many butterflies in years! It was the best of both worlds - the relaxing atmosphere of the farm, with all of the modern conveniences and amenities very close by. Keith's restaurant recommendations were great - we had an incredible lunch at the nearby French restaurant and a wonderful Italian dinner just up the street.
My kids would not leave until I promised that we would come back again - that was an easy promise
to make! Thank you, Keith, for an incredibly relaxing mini-vacation. We hope to be able to come back
Really lovely stay with excellent, responsive hosts. Nice and clean, well-maintained accommodation. They had no problem with us staying just the one night. Lovely relaxing location, farm animals, etc (though not much to do on site, just in case that's what you're expecting). Would happily stay again. :)
Fishing (cane poles and a few bass rigs provided), Horseback riding on Neighboring Farm, Oakland Heights, Explore the ponds (nine total) and creeks on the farm's 584 acres, Hiking and biking on miles of forest trails (adult and child bikes on site). Great New Rope Swing near Pond House. Watch our on-site trainer work her mounts. Watch cows and other farm activities that happen to be going on. Hot tub at main house available to Pond House guests, Lots of nearby wineries, antique shops, historic sites (Monticello - 25 miles, Montpelier - six miles, Wilderness - 20 miles), museums (Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum - three miles, Madison Museum - six miles), and shopping, However, most families have trouble getting the kids to leave the farm, Forty minutes to Skyline Drive.
