About John Swailes

Nuclear Engineer. Reside in WA, MD part time, and MN part time.

Own house in MN on lake, and house in MD on Chesapeake Bay.

John Swailes purchased this cottage in 1993

Why John Swailes chose Minnesota

Lived on this lake every summer for 65 years. Family on this lake for 95 years. Love it summer or winter! Family owns house next door to the north and the lot between the two houses.

My grandfather bought the property next door to the north shortly after he returned from World War I about 1919 and then built the first house on this lake in 1921. The original rustic log cabin was replaced by the current existing next door house in 1946, right after World War II. My parents honeymooned at that home in 1947. I visited this lake for the first time in the summer of 1950 two weeks after I was born. I have been here numerous times in each year between then and now.

I bought the property where my current home resides in 1993. It was the fourth time that the property had been for sale since a small frame home had been built upon it in 1925 by an aging German bachelor who was also a master carpenter. The carpenter retired to this property in the 1930's. I knew this gentleman very well. I hunted and fished with he and my grandfather on and around the lake. He owned the property and lived there most of the time until his death in 1965. He left the property to his cousin. The cousin eventually sold the property and a sequence of owners enjoyed the lake and that same original house until 1993. I bought the property in 1993 and modestly improved and remodeled the original house several times. That sequence of efforts evolved over years into the net very substantial upgrade that is this current home.

My grandfather passed away in 1962. My grandmother passed in 1988. My mother passed in 1992. My father passed in 2011.

The property to the north remains today in the hands of my brothers and myself. Between us we have 9 children all of whom routinely visit and stay at our homes on Horseshoe Lake. My brothers and I have planned for and hope to pass these wonderful living spots along to our children and are now well prepared to do so, when the time is appropriate

What makes this cottage unique

Small lake. Pristine spring fed water. Low boating traffic on the lake nearly all of the time as compared to White Fish Chain, Gull Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Leech Lake, etc. More suitable for families in some ways. More suitable for children venturing out on their own. Better wake boarding and water skiing due to low wave height and quiet boating condiitions. Many bays on the lake. Always a calm spot for trick skiing and trick wakeboarding. Generally good fishing.

House is all new in 2013. Roomy 3 bedroom and two bath cottage. Full laundry. Full living area with separate kitchen and dining spaces. Beautiful bright sunroom sitting area overlooking the lake and beach immediately in front of the house. Spaces flow comfortably together so no one is left out but there are lots of nooks for quiet reading or work. Thoughtfully designed and highly functional house with top quality commerical grade gourmet kitchen. Natural sunlight throughout with plentiful glass for view out to the lake as well as surrounding woodlands. Bedrooms have full closet and dressers. Master bedroom has ensuite bathroom. Sleeping loft has areas for children or adult guests. Spent four years designing and preparing to build this. Corrected all of the flaws in the previous home and then some.

Absolutely perfect

We didn't want to leave. Even though two of our three days were rainy, we were completely satisfied staying inside the beautiful house. The lake is so beautiful, clear and full of fish. We enjoyed every minute of it and would certainly come back!

This Home Had it All!

  • 5 of 5

We had a Girls Get Away here in April 2016 and we had an incredible time. the home has an outstanding kitchen that was above and beyond any expectations we had! There is a great view from almost every room in the house and there was comfortable, cozy seating all around. the technology for the sound and DVD system was a bit confusing; even with all of the written instructions, but for those "techies" out there you will enjoy the state of the art system. I would love to come back here in the summer!!

Beautiful, well appointed home!

  • 5 of 5

My brother & his wife joined us last weekend @ Johns home! The house is just beautiful & the view of the lake is an added bonus. My brother loves to cook & was in heaven when he saw the gourmet kitchen. We were amazed at how John had anything you could possibly need to cook with- even a wok & expresso machine!!! The fireplace in the living room was welcoming and cozy, he even had a couple of blankets! The bedrooms were large and beds were very comfortable- had one of the best nites sleep I have had in a long time. John had thought of everything to make his home a warm place to be & we wish we could of stayed longer! It was alittle rainy so we couldnt have a bonfire, there was a gas & charcoal grill also- just not enough time to use. We will definetly go back to this rental! Thank you John for a great weekend.

Fantastic experience in the real winter

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a fantastic long weekend in this beautiful cabin. We were 3 couples and had really good time. Despite extreme temperatures (down to -23°F!) we were outside everyday enjoing the frozen lake and the nice area. The cabin is really nice with a huge and very well equiped kitchen, the beds are very confortable. We will probably come back for longer stays!

Beautiful cabin, close amenities, stocked kitchen

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at John's cabin. The unit is a fully functional house with high-end finishes and kitchen stocked with pots, pans, utensils, appliances, etc. There are even some kitchen food staples such as flour and oil that people have left behind. The Wolf stove is excellent for cooking.

We were a little confused about check out policies. John's instructions indicated we should leave the house as we found it yet we were paying a cleaning fee. We ended up changing the bedding, starting the laundry, and scouring the kitchen.

We would definitely return.

Exceptional cottage and setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked this cottage for a fall getaway for five days, and it was wonderful. Cottage is beautiful and its close proximity to the lake is especially nice. Loved the kitchen and sitting areas. As others commented, the design is very cool. We brought our small dog and he enjoyed walking the trails right behind the cabin! We'll definitely be returning.
