Stars of Doona - your Sassafras retreat

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

“Stars of Doona” is a comfortable furnished house located high on the Great Dividing Range west of Jervis Bay at Sassafras.

Nestled in a sheltered north-east facing valley, the property is an ideal place to relax and unwind in beautiful natural bushland surroundings.

Take in the beautiful bush views and enjoy watching and listening to birds and other animals or gaze at the distant mountain ridges from the sunny sheltered north facing deck. The architect designed home blends into the spectacular forested landscape and uses passive solar design principles to provide a comfortable environment on hot summer days as well as on and cold winter nights.

The name "Stars of Doona" was passed on from a previous owner and supposedly has a connection with Greek Mythology although we have not been able to trace the origin of this theme and suspect it might somehow have been lost in translation. Nevertheless the name is evocative of the clear starry cool nights characteristic of this wonderful place.

The Sassafras district is located at the northern gateway to the spectacular Budawangs Range which offers extensive wilderness bushwalking opportunities, spectacular scenery and a stunning variety of Australian native plants and animals.

To the north is Morton National Park and the Ettrema Wilderness with a myriad of possibilities for experienced buskwalkers.

All this within 45 minutes by car to the pristine beaches of Jervis Bay.

With accommodation for up to 6 people, “Stars of Doona” has two bedrooms two bathrooms, a cozy wood combustion heater and a large open plan living dining kitchen area with a comfortable sofa bed. You can open the sliding doors to create a wonderful indoor/outdoor living space linking the hardwood deck with the large living area.

Accommodation consists of one queen bed in one bedroom, 1 king single bed and 2 king single bunk beds in the second bedroom and one sofa bed in the main living area.

The house is powered by a combination of standalone solar and gas and is an ideal way to sample "off-grid" living in comfort.

No smoking and no pets and no parties are permitted at this property.

Great place to unwind and get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

This little property is such a lovely place to just unwind, relax and get away from it all. It had everything we needed (fully equipped kitchen, comfortable bed + lounge area, firewood etc), and nothing we didn't (i.e. noise and neighbours). Bonus points to the owner John for his very prompt and friendly communication and clear instructions. Definitely somewhere we'd be more than happy to stay at again :)

Most beautiful rural stay

  • 5 of 5

This property is far from city area , the most beautiful place we have stayed. We had kangaroos and wallabies running around the property in the mornings and at dusk. Kids loved the place. John is so friendly and gave us all the information that we needed to stay in a rural property like this. It was a new experience to stay so remotely but the information given by John made it very comfortable for us to stay.

If you shop smart and get all your stuff you can have a very comfortable stay at this place. We drove to Hyams beach in the morning and its actually not that far , we did it for both days and we did not feel the distance. The closest shopping area is vincentia marketplace where you get everything that you need.

Network is patchy but vodafone was good at the far end of the property on the deck we were able to stream songs easily.

Highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to have a cool relaxed stay without city hassle.

Escapism at its best...

  • 5 of 5

We needed a break from everything! We got exactly that. Comfortable, relaxed house equiped with standard provisions for an escape (note, no microwave or TV - suited us, but some may struggle if this is your thing..) Loved not having stable internet, loved the fireplace, comfy couch and extra-comfy bed, everything worked and everything as per property description. On the list for a return trip!

Owner very prompt with replies and clear on relevant instructions (take the first driveway on the right we worked out - third time lucky :-))

Lovely and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful little property with a fantastic view. Hubby and I wanted a remote getaway with our little girl and we definitely got it. Was so lovely to sit out on the deck in the sun admiring the view. Fantastic for little ones too as there is so much wildlife around the property! We saw wallabies, kangaroos, rabbits and even a wild emu! Choice of boardgames was great on a random note too. Lovely get away. Didnt want to go home! Thanks John and we will definitely be back soon!
