If you are looking for the true Vermont experience, a 4 mile scenic bike ride to Kingdom Trails, this place is for you. The property is located on top of 40 acres, with views of Vermont's green mountains in all directions and not a road in sight. The house is a artisan's dream, with built-in cherry cabinets, hardwood floors and concrete counter tops. Everything you could possibly need is here for a perfect Vermont vacation; wood stove, washer and dryer, fire pit, well appointed kitchen, trails to hike and snowshoe and a small cabin in the woods (with it's own woodstove). Bike or drive 5 miles on a scenic dirt road to East Burke Village, surrounded by skiing and mountain biking trails. Or jump in your car and head out on the pavement to beautiful Lake Willoughby. If you're an artist, or just love beautiful places, there are plenty of gardens and stonewalls to sketch, paint or photograph, and some big trees to dream under.
My husband, and sculptor, David Tanych and I (Meryl Lebowitz) have been working on this property for the past 10 years. We designed and built all of the buildings, which include an art studio, woodworking shop, metal studio and house.
I consider this compound our finest collaboration. We love having people connect with the property and encourage you to feel creative here! Bring cameras, sketch pads, notebooks...or just chill. It's fun to walk the trails and check out David's ponds at the bottom of our hill.
Please let us know if you might be bringing a pet. We ask that they not be left by themselves in the apartment, unless crated. We also have a $25 per day, per pet fee.
If you're looking for a place that can feed your soul, as well as offer you access to the best of what Vermont has to offer, this is the spot. Kids love it too, and yes, we have a bb gun.

About Meryl Lebowitz
I am an oil painter, who has been working as an artist for 30 years. David is a woodworker, and metal artist. Together we have collaborated on our property for 11 years. Recently, we have been spending our winters in California, perusing our art careers, returning to Vermont in time to plant the garden.
Meryl Lebowitz purchased this Apartment in 2001
Why Meryl Lebowitz chose Kirby
We bought this property with a vision of making it into a compound that would inspire creativity. It was a blank canvas with an incredible vista, except for the acres of clear-cut forest, which made it look as if a bomb had been dropped. First we cleaned up the land, which took a year, David built a barn to house our equipment on the second year, I started the perennial gardens, and together with our son, we began building the stone walls. The third year, my studio and David's woodshop were built, we then were able to work up here, while we lived off site. We began the house the following year, and David had the opportunity to build a structure with a rounded wall (the front wall of our house)....We lived in my studio for 6 months. Our first project in the house was an apartment, complete with David's beautiful wood cabinets and concrete counter tops. We lived there while we began working on the rest of our home. It is this apartment which we now rent on Homeaway.
What makes this Apartment unique
Benefits? This compound is like heaven. Gardens, trails, firepits, a cabin in the woods, fresh air, no traffic, walking and running loops, privacy, organic veggies, beauty, beauty, beauty.... If you want to vacation in a rural area, you cant do better than this. And town is only 4 miles away.

Love this place
We had a wonderful stay here -- the views are amazing and it's such a peaceful spot. The caretaker was very responsive, and we were very cozy. It was a quick drive to Burke for skiing. We'd love to return!
Great location, convenient to town and Kingdom trails. Beautiful setting.
Need to update the mattresses in both bedrooms. Too soft and squeaky. WiFi was out, no specific reason given by contact person. Basement apartment, but excellent lighting.
Sorry about wifi problems. The internet provider had told us we were having problems because of a shrub was blocking our direct view to the tower (which is on Burke Mountain). After trimming (with no result), wifi people returned and told us the router needed replacing! I believe this all happened during your stay, and I had explained to you that we were trimming a tree! This is our first complaint on bed firmness....we'll look into it.
Funky and cozy!
We really enjoyed our stay in Kirby! The location is just beautiful and the house is very cozy. My husband, infant daughter and I, along with another couple, enjoyed walks around the property and some biking while we were there. The property manager was quick to respond to us when we needed him. We put the kitchen to good use and it was fairly well appointed (including a bath in the kitchen sink for our daughter!).
Would recommend this as a great place to stay! Thanks Meryl and Robbie : )
Wonderful location and retreat!
My husband and I absolutely loved the location of this rental property...on top of this big hill overlooking the beautiful Vermont hills and countryside. We've traveled and stayed at many, many locations and this one is at the top of our list. Just waking up and looking out the plentiful windows was jawdropping. There was lots of space for more than our party of two...two living spaces, two bathrooms, and two bedrooms. One of the bathrooms was a partial finish, but that didn't inconvenience us in the least. We loved the close drive (10 min??) to restaurants and grocery store. Ate at the diner there twice in two days...yummy. Also really enjoyed walking down the country roads and seeing all the unique properties and scenery. We definitely hope to return some day with more of our family:)
Gorgeous home on a NE Kingdom Ridgetop
Beautiful custom home,up the ridge line from East Burke. Can't wait to return.
Kirby is a scenic gem in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, bordered by Burke, Victory, Concord, St Johnsbury and Lyndon. A small, agricultural village, our rental property is 5 miles from East Burke, a village well known for it's ski area and biking trails, and 4 miles from Lyndon, home of Lyndon State College.
