Overview

About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-16)

Crossing the bridge into the town of White Stone you arrive at this magnificent estate on the Rappahannock River. 'Pop Castle' is a property entrenched in civil war history. It is on the National Registry of Historic Homes and a registered Virginia Historic Landmark.

This 1855 house, flanked by two majestic Oak trees overlooking the two-mile wide Rappahannock River, offers expansive lawns, towering trees and a long sandy beach. Sit out on the screened porch and watch the osprey and the resident eagle go after their daily catch while the dolphins swim by. Relax in the hammock on the sandy shores of the river or go swimming, fishing, or crabbing off the 30 foot deck (two crab pots are available). This five bedroom historic home on twelve exquisite acres with hundred year old magnolias and oaks is fully furnished and equipped with WiFi, cable, bikes, outdoor games and a ping pong table.

With the wood paneled living room with fireplace, comfortable TV room with fireplace, formal dining room with fireplace, sunroom with a large bay window overlooking the river, a large and bright kitchen with adjoining windowed garden/laundry room, and a spectacular 50 foot long porch opening directly to the wide treed lawn and the river, your family and friends will have plenty of space to share your valued time together. On the second floor, five bedrooms, three with fireplaces, offer ample sleeping space (although if more is needed, the first floor sunroom and TV room with adjoining full bathrooms can easily be converted into bedrooms using our queen airbeds).

Vacation homes abound, but none other offers such serenity and natural beauty, while allowing you to stay in a house shelled by Union gunboats in 1861 or on the land raided by the British fleet during the War of 1812. The property includes historic outbuildings, including a smoke house and granary from the 1850s and an enormous work shed housing some of the cannonballs uncovered on the property.

Come take off your shoes and relax in this historic estate on the Rappahannock River, one mile from the Chesapeake Bay. Above all, come sit on the deck and experience a sunset as you have never seen it before, and be a part of history.

Fabulous Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were recently lucky enough to spend a week at Pop Castle with our extended family. We found the house to be spotless and well stocked. The kitchen had every tool/implement you could possibly want to make fabulous meals including a cuisinart and sandwich press. The house has an incredible collection of games and movies. We spent the majority of our time on the screened in front porch or outside. We were pleasantly surprised by the sandy beach and shallow shores. My nieces spent hours safely playing in the water even when it was very wavy. The kids were especially enamored of the swing and the fireflies. We loved the historic feel of the house but greatly appreciated the updated bathrooms. It's a beautiful setting and we loved exploring the Northern Neck. We worried about getting all the laundry done but there is a great larger washer/dryer so it was really no problem. The only cons were that there were some blinds missing on some of the bedroom windows. It was truly a magical week and we hope to return in the future.

Stunning Wedding Venue!

  • 5 of 5

We had our daughter's wedding reception at Pop Castle on May 20, 2017. The venue is an exceptional place for a wedding reception. We were able to have the tent parallel with the river and the views with the setting sun were amazing and therefore, we will have some spectacular photographs to remember this special day forever. The groom's family stayed at Pop Castle and the house easily accomodated 12 of them. The house is beautiful and with plenty of room everyone to have their own space. The owner's were great to work with, answering all of my wedding questions in a timely and helpful manner. This place is truly a gem and you will not find another place like it in the Northern Neck. Thank you for a truly memorable time!

Spring Wedding at Pop Castle

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing! It is stocked with everything you can image you would need and even things you forgot to bring.

It is also a wonderful wedding venue. Our daughter was married May 6 and it was breathtaking. She has her new husband saw the house and the fantastic view of the river and feel in love.

Family Easter Gathering at Pop Castle

  • 5 of 5

We recently came back from our Pop Castle getaway. We were 6 adults and 3 young children in our Easter gathering. We had a great time. When we drove up to the house and saw the house and the view we were very excited and couldn't wait to get started on our exploration of the grounds. The house is beautiful , and we had plenty of room for all of us. The entire house was decorated very beautifully and uniquely. We all enjoyed exploring the many mementos in every room that appeared to come from all over the world. So very interesting. The full length screened back porch is where we shared most of our meals. It was a favorite room to have early morning coffee or late night snacks. It had a long table that could more than accommodate our big crowd. The owners were even very thoughtful in providing a high chair for our little guy. We had perfect weather, so all of our time was spent outside thoroughly enjoying the spectacular beauty of the grounds and the Rappahanock River. We brought many outside activities, and we realized we probably didn't have to because the garage was well stocked with many activities. We spent only one day away from the house for a trip to Busch Gardens. It was an hour away, and we had a great time. We were very glad, however, that that was the only day we spent away from Pop Castle, because we really were able to enjoy our relaxed, fun stay at the house.

We had a fantastic Easter egg hunt!!!!! The places for the bunny to hide the eggs was limitless!! Our grandchildren had soooooo much fun. It will be an egg hunt to remember for a long time !!!

The location was perfect. When we were outside it was so secluded that you felt you were the only one around for miles. Yet we were only a short ride into the towns of White Stone and Kilmarnock that had a good variety of shopping and restaurants. The owner, Walid, provided a listing of restaurants for take out that we tried and were delighted with. We also did a lot of cooking in the well stocked kitchen- complete with dishes, pots and spices.

Thank you, Walid, for all those tips and for your quick response to any of our inquiries. Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful home with us.

Wonderful Wedding Venue

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was over the weekend, and it was much more convenient renting it as our venue for our wedding and ceremony for logistics. All the guests and wedding party loved the house for its charm. My only regret is that we were so busy that I couldn't enjoy the house all that much.

The house was clean, the owner and neighbors are very laid back, and it is the perfect quiet place to unwind and enjoy the river.
