Why Gaye & Jim Shanahan chose Hill End

Within walking distance of all the villages amenities and a short drive to three spectacular lookouts. Northeys Apartment is also the prime location to enjoy the annual 'End Festival'
What makes this Apartment unique
Hill End is a unique, isolated village in the Central Tablelands of NSW. From the early 1850's to 1890's Hill End was made famous by extraordinary gold finds. It was declared a historic site in 1967 and is managed by the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Hill End retains many original gold rush buildings and has attracted many artists who have been inspired by the rugged beauty of the area. Today, Hill End still supports a thriving art community and a diverse mixture of local characters. Whether you're an artist, photographer, family historian, cyclist, fossicker, birdwatcher or budding astronomer, Hill End has it all! Located right in the heart of the Central West's wine and food regions of Mudgee, Bathurst and Orange visitors are able to pick up their favourite goodies on the way. Northeys Apartment is also within walking distance of the Royal Hotel and General Store where meals and refreshments are available.

Go back in history but in luxury
I could not complain about anything, only could not find any gold......Ha Ha.
Stairs a bit steep for the elderly, and kitchen needs a bigger frypan. Could be drafty in winter.
Peter & Robyn
Thanks for your comments Peter and Robyn. Yes, the stairs are a little steep at Northeys. In the era of 1873 when Northeys was built, this was the norm. As Northeys is a listed building changes to it's fabric cannot be made. Fortunately, we were able to add another handrail to the stairs which we believe makes for safe use. We will ensure future senior guests are aware of this. We will gladly take on your suggestion of a larger frypan for the kitchen, thanks. We have had a number of visitors stay during the colder months and all have commented on the cosiness of the apartment. Once again, thanks for choosing to stay at Northeys. Gaye & Jim
very nice property
central location, short walk from pub. Did not like curtain instead of door between bedroom and bathroom.Could not fault anything else.
Thank you Peter for your review, we hope you and Jane will stay again when you next visit Hill End. Due to some space restrictions, we have yet to find the perfect solution for a door to en suite.
Where modern comfort meets historic hardship!
The apartment is very cosy and well equipped. Cooking facilities were more than adequate plus a Weber BBQ on the verandah. We stocked up with some fine food at Mudgee as the only place to eat in Hill End is at the pub. Being able to stay right in the heart of Hill End in such luxurious accommodation is a real bonus. Thanks Gaye and Jim for your hospitality.
Thanks Barry, look forward to you both visiting again.
Hill End is located in the Central Tablelands of NSW. It was declared a historic site in 1967 because of it's legendary gold rush era and intact gold rush era buildings. Since that time it has been managed by the National Parks & Wildlife Service who protect it's buildings and artefacts. Hill End is also a mecca for artists, this started during the 1940's with Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend. Hill End still has a thriving art community. There are three spectacular lookouts close to the village, a wonderful Heritage Centre right in the heart of the village and History Hill just two kilometres away. A must do, History Hill has an amazing museum with the biggest collection of artefacts from the gold rush era. Another must do is the Bald Hill Mine Tour, open weekends and school holidays at 1.30pm, just book at Northeys Store before 1pm.(0407187275) Other tours are available from the NPWS at peak times, just give their office a call on 6337 8206 for details. Self guided tours of the village can be done too, just grab a brochure/map from the Heritage Centre and follow the signs, historic buildings and photographs (from the Holtermann Collection of 3,500 glass plate negatives from the 1870s which have been recognised in the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World register) and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the village. Other attractions and activities available in Hill End are fossicking at Golden Gully, viewing the historic cemeteries, cycling, bird watching, bush walking, star gazing, photography, art or just relaxing on the verandah at Northeys Apartment, the General Store or Royal Hotel (where you can catch up with locals) and watch the world go by. Hill End has four distinct seasons and Beyers Avenue leading you into the village displays all four in a spectacular display. Hill End is just one of those places not to be missed. It has something for everyone.
