Nearby

Among the rolling hills surrounding Salsomaggiore, it is worth visiting the Castello di Scipione (3 km), the ancient manor of the medieval Pallavicino family which had the function of protecting the area’s many salt wells.

Of great interest near the town are two splendid examples of Romanesque art built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Romanesque church of St. Nicomedes in the village of the same name (about 5 km from the centre) and the Romanesque church of San Giovanni in Contignaco (2.5 km).

About Roisin Dockrell

We purchase a home in this region as both my husband's mother and father were Italian and originated from this area.

In the 1990's we had an Irish Pub & Hotel in Fidenza, We returned to live in the UK in 1999 but we missed our friends and the lifestyle and then made a decision that we would buy a house and come back to retire in the area.

We purchased our home in 2001 and since then have been making lots of renovations to it and extending it to include 2 more bedrooms and another bathroom.

We go back very often and love the peace and the Italian way of life.

Roisin Dockrell purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Roisin Dockrell chose Parma

We wanted to live in the country but have contact with people and be part of a small community. We choose the hamlet where people live all year round people who were born in the hamlet but return from the Cities - April to November, There is a wonderful sense of belonging and a peaceful existence , whether in winter or summer. In fact we love going there in the winter, it is so relaxing snuggled up with wonderful wood fires. We have created a lovely home that we are always sad to leave..

What makes this farmhouse unique

Ideally placed to enjoy peace and quietness of the area with outstanding views of the area.

Where it is

Surrounded by rolling green hills, Salsomaggiore Terme lies between the provinces of Parma and Piacenza, in the heart of Northern Italy and the Po Valley, about an hour from Milan and Bologna.

Why visit

The ideal destination for those seeking a place of relaxation, the exquisitely Nouveau-Deco-style spa is particularly recommended for recovering from city stress with its quiet places, its huge green spaces and its wellness center where you can enjoy regenerative treatments.

Bessozola

We spent a most comfortable week in the small village of Besozzola.

The property was a real home from home, spotless and extremely well equipped. The house has been renovated to a superb standard but it felt like home.

The views were spectacular travelling up to the property and the directions on arrival easy to follow. The surrounding villages and towns were wonderful to visit - the Spa at Salsomaggiore is spectacular, we were spoilt for choice with the many castles in the vicinity and the local bakery was amazing. We fitted in a day trip to Florence on the train and a day trip to Venice by car. Despite lots of sightseeing, it felt most relaxing tucked away in the Italian hills.

The local residents made us feel very welcome but not under the spotlight. Our neighbour, who had spent some time in England many years ago, spoke great English and was really helpful. It was a pleasure to chat to him and learn about the village and the surroundings.

Our chief chef enjoyed the wonderful kitchen and it was just great for the 7 of us to enjoy fantastic Italian food at the large family table at our leisure; the patio was a lovely spot to sit and relax; the bathrooms were pristine and we loved the pictures on the stairwell giving us a glimpse of the past.

The kids were pleased to be able to hook up to the internet but there was so much to do and see they didn’t spend much time surfing. It was great to access the internet for train timetables and current tourist information.

I would highly recommend a stay in this property and we would love to return in the future.

Wonderful Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been more pleased with this villa. We had planned a Family reunion for our Mom (from Canada) with her two sisters that live in Sicilia and Piacenza. They had not been together under the same roof since childhood. The villa housed all 8 of us comfortably and the modern well fit kitchen enabled us to have many family meals around the beautiful Greatroom table. The location is secluded in a little town of a few homes and a church which we found very quaint. Day trips to Salsamajorie ( about 30min) were scenic and pleasurable once we got use to them. Coming from the flatlands of the Canadian prairie there was a learning curve! The villa is very well appointed and we found everything we needed for what was a memorable stay. Very difficult to leave from!

Peaceful Italian Village

  • 4 of 5

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Besozzola. The house is in a beautiful small village in the Italian countryside. The neighbours were friendly and helpful without overstepping. The house was comfortable & the kitchen was well stocked. It was the ideal spot for a peaceful holiday.

Owner's Response: I am always really pleased when our guests recognise the beauty of the area and can settle into our home in Italy while they are gleaning as much about the area as possible, our neighbours are super and really enjoy meeting the guests who come from all over the world. Thank you for your review and your honesty. Roisin

A picture of false advertising!

  • 3 of 5

This property is three star at best! It is remote and poorly maintained. The inside is dark and dreary. Beds are uncomfortable with worn linen and towels. The immediate vicinity affords little by way of restaurants apart from a very rustic trattoria that only opens on request and has a very limited menu.

The outside is not maintained and the beautiful view of the valley is obscured by overgrown shrubs and a 'washing line'. The patio is home to a few families of feral cats so outside dining is not possible. The golfing advertised is 7kms away and dining there is only possible on select nights and of course you must drive a very winding, often poorly surfaced road to go anywhere.

The beautiful church in the hamlet rings out at 7am and several other times in the day, playing an entire melody that feels like you're in the belltower!

There is little to recommend this property and I was sorely disappointed.

Owner's Response: Dear Eilish, I was surprised by your review, especially as it was posted a full 8 months after your visit. I have been renting my house through this site since 2002, prior to the takeover by HomeAway and this is the only negative review that I have received. As you can see from the other Reviewers they all enjoyed their stay and the wonderful scenic location. I am disappointed that you did not share the same enjoyable holiday. The description of the house is in "Black & White" and very detailed, leaving no one in any doubt that it is based in a Hamlet in the Apennines which is a mountainous area with some stunning scenery. Driving is necessary to visit the large number of small villages and towns, whether for cultural or shopping trips. Also, with the wide selection of excellent Trattoria's and Restaurants in the area I was very surprised that you choose to eat in a Golf Club? With respect to the cats; unfortunately, some guests feed them despite my request not to do so - a situation over which I have no control. I am delighted that you enjoyed other aspects of the stay with a 3 out of 5 Review. The Owner

Relax Italian Style

  • 5 of 5

I really wanted to appreciate the Italian country lifestyle, and this was perfect. You'll need a car to experience driving on winding roads, meandering through lush paddocks, small barns, old churches, quaint villages, trattorias (that may or may not be open...) and locals that are friendly and appreciate your effort at speaking very bad Italian...

The farm house itself was very clean, cool and comfortable, with all things necessary for a self-sufficient holiday. It allows you to do nothing at all, or read a book on the sun-drenched patio, or stir up a huge pasta in the well equipped kitchen. The wi-fi worked well to keep you in touch with the rest of the world.

The village itself it small and friendly, but you'll need to go further for supplies. The local villagers are friendly, but not imposing. Their pets were even more fun ! You'll feel blessed going to Church, whose hourly bells remind you you're in farming territory (but it's not difficult to forget with the district views).

The surrounding areas are for the foodies - parma ham, parmasen cheese, balsamic vinegar, pasta making, cooking classes - so Italian, so fresh.

I had such a wonderful time, staying here and visiting local towns and cities, i extended my stay, which was no problem at all with such a helpful owner.

Would highly recommend if you want to get away from busy hustle and bustle.

Owner's Response: I am delighted with the review that this guest has posted and feel she was as taken with the house and the surroundings as I was on my first visit before we purchased the property. My guest came from Australia and was so looking forward to coming to the country where her family originated from and experiencing the way of life that they had left many years ago. Unfortunately, her parents were not able to come with her, at the last minute as her mother had to go into hospital, this was an ideal place to relax as I believe she has an extremely busy life back in Australia. I do hope this lady and her family return and I will make sure to make their stay as good if not better then on this occasion. Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Roisin

Secret hideaway - Home from home!

  • 5 of 5

I've just returned from a visit to Emilia Romagna, where I stayed in Casa Nascosta in a small hamlet in this beautiful landscape rich in culture and history.

This house is more than a rental property - it's a home from home with everything possible to make your stay as easy and comfortable as possible. The house is beautifully presented, with a lovely patio area outside to relax and enjoy the weather and stunning scenery.

It's a great base for visiting all the region has to offer - from lovely towns with traditional markets, to medieval castles, wineries and the famous cheese factories.

Salso Maggiore is "just over the hill", and is famous for the natural thermal spa facilities, set in an architecturally stunning building in the centre of town. Verona, Modena, Parma and the magnificent coastal area of the Chinque Terra are all within just over an hours drive.

There is no shortage of restaurants, pizzerias and trattorias in the area, and it seems truly impossible to get anything other than delicious food, cooked to perfection, with a range to suit every taste!

Try the trattoria in Trinita, l'Ocha Bianca, and Il Giardino di Borla for a taste of rustic dishes as they've been made for generations - all only a 10 minute drive away.

If you prefer to stay home, the kitchen has all the essentials you need plus a "store cupboard" of seasonings and flavourings, provided by Roisin, the owner, who has thought of every little detail to make your holiday stress-free!

If you want to get away from the rat race to a slower pace of life and see the way the locals live Casa Nascosta is the place for you!

I'm thrilled to have found this secret hideaway and look forward to returning very soon to experience more of what this lovely house and region have to offer.

Wonderful place to stay to explore Italy!

  • 5 of 5

Roisin and Frank have a beautiful home that is well situated for visitors to stay and then do day trips to many areas of northern Italy. The house is well equipped and well appointed and is in a picturesque village with friendly people. Roisin and Frank are easily accessible for initial arrival questions and have provided all the amenities of home - a great kitchen, updated bathrooms, wi-fi, laundry facilities, and comfortable rooms. We greatly enjoyed the opportunity to visit local villages and castles, eat at local restaurants, do some of our own cooking with local ingredients, and to be able to visit Parma, Milan, Florence, and the Cinque Terra region on day trips and to then return home to a comfortable shower and bed. The village has a beautiful local church, nice neighbors, and even friendly local cats and dogs , if you are an animal lover! The listing was indeed accurate and the house very well maintained and Roisin and Frank were a great help. We would absolutely recommend this as a great place to either base out of to explore Italy or simply stay, relax and enjoy local food and wine! If you go, be sure not to miss the local castles and take Roisin and Frank up on their recommendations on places to eat!

Owner's Response: It is really good to get a review where the Guests have taken our advice on places to see and eat, it is really a wonderful area and we are proud to have people visit and see what a stunning area it is. It has so much to offer that those who have been to Tuscany say is superior to what they found when the went on holiday there. Thank you Guests, only spoke to Paul but hope he and his family will return to Besozzola in the future.
