Stanwell Park has a fascinating history
Jacaranda House is situated between two natural creeks (Stanwell and Hargraves Creeks) and two of the first houses owned by famous Australians. Sir Thomas Mitchell built the first house in Stanwell just down the road from Jacaranda house and it overlooks the main beach and two lagoons that are fed by the creeks. Sir Thomas was Australia's first Surveyor General who discovered and mapped much of the early colony. He declared Stanwell Park the jewel for where he wanted to reside. Just up the road in the other direction is 'Hillcrest', where Lawrence Hargraves first designed his box kite that lifted him 16 feet off the ground (hence the name of the local cafe) and led directly to the Wright Brothers' ability to take the first heavier than air powered flight. Indeed the first commercial airplane ever built was named in honour of Lawrence's remarkable contributions. As an interesting aside, two houses up from Jacaranda is Articles Art Gallery, originally the second Mitchell House and later the first Guest House in Stanwell Park (opposite the first location of the railway station) and nearby the famous rail line viaduct. In honour of this history, Jacaranda House has a gallery of historical photographs.

Stanwell Park Gem
We really enjoyed our week in this great beach house just an hour's drive from the centre of Sydney, but it feels like a world away – it's a complete escape from city life but still so very close. Being set back slightly from the beach is actually a real plus as you get the full effect of the wonderful tropical garden and yet still get the afternoon breeze without being buffeted if the wind does pick up for the hang gliders on the bluff. It's a very easy and nice walk to the amazing beach at any time of the day, and the numerous cafe's etc are literally a 2 minute walk in the other direction. The house is really well set up and the bedrooms are very comfortable with lovely views. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. Overall it's just very a very easy place to live in and experience the location – the ocean pool at Coal Cliff is also sublime and only a 5-minute drive away, it's possibly one of the best ocean pools in Australia and beyond. The house also has a good TV and stereo system if you need them – but you'll probably just want to sit on the deck and talk to the parrots, and forget about everything else. The owners are also great to deal with. Very highly recommended and we will be back.
Excellent Property and Location
Terrific place to stay
What a wonderful location if you like as we do the beach, cafes and bushwalking. We found the house to be perfect for our needs. Spacious and well appointed. No doubt this is because it is the owners home when not rented out (hence the 4 out 5 for Quality but to be honest this is nitpicking and is great value for money). As such, we found it very comfortable with everything we could ask for, from a very functional kitchen, and large living area which by the way included an old record player perfect for our late night reminiscences. The bedrooms were clean and spacious with nice views.
There is a large balcony with BBQ and tables and chairs, and plenty of parrots. This balcony overlooks a gorgeous garden, which we took the liberty to enjoy during the heat of the day.
It is just a short way to the beach via a walk that follows a creek then lagoon. This lagoon is surrounded by a well-appointed park with BBQs and playground. We took a walk up the other end of the beach and found a loop back to the house via the main café area. The choice of café’s is astounding given the small size of the settlement. It surprised us that the walk back to the house from the Palms Café (next to a great Art Gallery) was just a minute.
We also did some walks along the Wodi-Wodi track which starts just up the hill near the railway station On the second day as my husband played golf at Boomerang Golf Club on top of the ridge, I walked down from there to the house – some amazing vistas of Stanwell Park from aloft. Which reminds me watching the hang gliding from Bald Hill was also a highlight.
We loved our stay at this spacious holiday house. Our bed in the big bedroom was comfortable, the kitchen well appointed and the deck very private, yet open to the sun and with a view into the well established garden and the green hills in the distance. Surrounded by palms and visited by parrots of all sorts, we had the best meal cooked on the BBQ. We’ll definitely be back. What a great location so close to the city!
Run a mile - away!
Initial presentation of the living/lounge area looked comfortable & pleasant. Enter the kitchen & things deteriorated rapidly. The smell of cooking grease pervaded:
The toaster gave up a small plate full of crumbs & toast pieces.
Microwave - dirty plate & walls splattered with food.
Cook-top greasy, oven dirty outside, crumbs & solidified fat inside.
Grill - rack looked like it had entertained a number of fatty chops.
Fridge - smeary outside, shelves dirty, crisper not cleaned, freezer with a drawer of opened & used food packages with a frozen leaked/spilt matter on the bottom.
Tatty cupboards & shelves with melonite(?) edging torn or missing, one particle board shelf edge swollen from having been wet at some stage.
Cupboards appeared as if things had been 'thrown in' hurriedly - as if a landlord was making a surprise inspection.
Dirty windows, holed & torn fly screens.
And the pervading grease smell? We found that emanated from the gobules of fat hanging from the cook top extractor filters.
Up to the bedrooms. The rear & roomier one - the wardrobe mostly taken up with someone's clothes.
Our suspicions aroused, we checked the bed linen - hairs on the pillow cases & in the sheets!
So we opted for the front & noisier (in the morning) bedroom, which seemed clean.
We should have walked out, but where to go? We'd booked three nights, managed to stay two before it got to us.
We're guessing that between lets, this "Air BnB" type accommodation (the front door also gives access to the flat downstairs) is occupied by an old person barely able to look after him/her self & should possibly be in aged care.
Stayz is damaging its reputation keeping Jacaranda on its books.
And yes, we took photos.

Ours is not a formula hotel/motel. It is our family holiday home. In the two years since purchased, we have painted it inside and out, installed a new bathroom and deck, new bamboo flooring, new carpets, new barbecue, new table and chairs, new fridge, new television, new microwave. We rent out occasionally to help defray such ongoing renovation costs. So far, this is our only nasty review. We come here to surf, bushwalk, visit the cafes, national parks, art gallery, trail ride and enjoy sitting on our decks with friends and family for a barbecue looking onto our back garden which today is in bloom. It is a shame you did not appreciate it: the jacaranda tree, bush lilies, agapanthus, birds of paradise, geraniums, lavender, irises....It is visited by rosellas, budgerigars, galahs, kookaburras, lizards and more...Your ageist rermarks and our previous ratings and comments give you limited credibiity.
Great long weekend away.
This was a great property for us two couples with two two yr old girls and a newborn. The bedroom we good sizes and able to comfortably fit porta cots for the children. The deck was great place for the children To play outside but in sight. The BBQ was not the best to cook on and I could not get the oven to work but other than that all facilities were great. Walking distance to the beach (although return walk wasn't all up quite a steep hill) and walking distance to the park cafe which had great coffee and breakfast. Carlton the owner is lovely to deal with, extremely helpful and accommodating. Overall I would recommend this property to small families or couples.
4 of us stayed for 2 nights, plenty of space and very relaxing house with great terrace. 5 min walk to beach and cafes so perfect location. Highly recommended.
