About the property

2 Bedroom, 2Bath, Sleeps 4

Located on a 150 acre private island within the gates of Colleton River Plantation*, this cottage sits on one of the prettiest, most unique sites in the Hilton Head area. The 'Devil's Elbow Cottage' is nestled among ancient Live Oak trees overlooking the marshes and waters of Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge. This very comfortable cottage has high ceilings and large windows that create a light atmosphere and lets you enjoy this special setting. Built in 1992 and recently updated, it and the adjacent 'main house' are the only houses on the island.

Enjoy the best of both worlds. Experience the natural realm of the Lowcountry Bluffton/Hilton Head region of years past yet be a short drive from all of the beaches, shopping and amenities of one of the world's foremost resort areas.

Natural World: Listen to the warblers in the Oaks and the Snapping Shrimp in the marsh below as you doze off for your afternoon nap on the porch. Buy seasonal vegetables from the organic farmer on the island before he goes to the farmer's market. Set the crab trap from the dock or cast a net for shrimp and enjoy the seafood bounty of the Lowcountry. Sight fish for Redfish from a kayak on the flats of the adjacent islands. Bring your boat and explore the miles of inland waters of the area.

Back to Reality: If the natural world gets to be too much for you it is a ten minute drive to highway 278 and all of the shopping, dining, golf and beaches that you could desire. Visit the galleries of Bluffton's old town. Take the beautiful drive to Charleston or spend a day in Savannah or Beaufort.

Colleton River Plantation: Colleton River Plantation is a private community and the amenities are for the use of members and their guests only. Rental does not convey use of the amenities.

Enjoyable get-away!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Hilton Head, and this cottage was really what we needed. The house was clean, well stocked with things we would need for our stay, secluded for privacy, and just a great place to relax. The views are great, and if you are looking for privacy, and a place to get away from the normal fast-paced life, then this is the place to do it.

Amazing and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The cottage at Colleton River is an amazing property! On top of that Peter and his wife are very great owners. My wife and I enjoyed a short getaway at their property in July '17 and immediately were overjoyed with the amount of nature and pristine beauty that surrounded the property. Conveniently located right outside of Hilton Head, we actually spent more time in Bluffton and spending time around this property than we did heading into Hilton Head. That said, bring your bikes, your camera and some board games. Then settle in enjoy time at this one of a kind place!

Beautiful, unique, and perfect place for nature lovers.

  • 5 of 5

My kids and I have stayed at vacation homes all around the country over a period of several years. Few stand out. To say this one stood out for us is an understatement.

The island itself is beautiful. It is peaceful and yet full of life. Spanish moss hanging from live oaks, tall pines, palmettos, deer, numerous types of birds and other animals make for a unique place to stay.

We love to fish, and the dock was great. Caught several kinds of fish and my son hooked about an 8 foot alligator (although I understand they are rare in the saltwater). Caught shrimp with a cast net, baited the crab trap with shrimp, and ate fresh shrimp and crab. Sunrise at the dock is beautiful. We all had a great time kayaking.

The house is simple and relaxing. The view from the master bedroom is incredible. We all fell asleep one night on the screened in porch with a nice breeze and all the sounds of the marsh.

Some great restaurants in Bluffton are only a few miles away, and the beach at Hilton Head is not far.

Peter is there to answer questions and offer help, but he and his family leave you to yourselves to explore and do as you wish.

Just book it.

I commented to the owner during coordination for the property that I've never seen so many positive reviews on VRBO. 100% JUSTIFIED!!! Wow. What a place. To give you an idea of what you're dealing with, go to the owners web page. His name is Peter Cram and he's a photographer. Google that. Look at his photos, read his bio, and then make a few inferences about what kind of a place you'd imagine a guy like that living in. I'll bet you'll still not grasp just how beautiful this place is!

The place itself is absolutely "charming." It's fully stocked as far as paper products, spices, implements, etc.. It's super comfortable and appropriately and tastefully decorated. Just top notch. You'll be staying at the end of a 1 mile long sandy lane driveway. Yes...1 mile long driveway. (Read it again if you have to.) There are two inhabited houses on the island. The Cram's house and the guest house right next to it which is the cottage in which you'll stay. Peace. Quiet. Unbelievable beauty. If you're looking to be in the middle of a party then you're looking at the wrong place. There's a dock for fishing or to launch a kayak from or just watch the world go by. The screened porch is just...well, you have to see it to believe how wonderful the views are. We watched the evening storms roll in and it was amazing.

Besides enjoying the surroundings, we did the typical HHI things in town. Go see Bluffton for sure! My son and I mountain biked around the island some and then took our bikes over to Pinckney refuge and biked there one morning. I read a review where someone said all you needed was a bike after you get there. Uhhhh...that's not true unless you like to bike on very busy roads and long distances. You'll most likely want a vehicle unless your plan is just to chill at the cottage. And let me tell you, if that's your plan then it's an excellent one! My wife and I kept thinking, "Boy! We love our son and we're glad he's experiencing this, but wouldn't this be great if it was just us out here!?" Totally romantic if you've got even a smidgen of romance left in you.

Enough already... It's a "sure thing" in the VRBO world. Can't miss. Peter Cram is pretty chill and easy to work with. (Didn't get to meet Leisa.) YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!
