Relax and enjoy your carefree and elegant vacation rental in Saugatuck / Douglas Michigan, near the shores of Lake Michigan with a view of Saugatuck harbor. This historical home, built in the 1870's by shipbuilder James Tisdale, has been painstakingly restored to its former grandeur while providing modern conveniences and classic surroundings for today's vacation traveler.
Situated on the 'dunes side' of Saugatuck and nestled in a wooded area shaded by 100-year-old oak trees, the stately vacation rental home is lavishly bordered by lawn, bushes, and lovely flower gardens. Until recently the property was operated as a B&B (known as Deer Creek Cottages).
Newly reinvigorated, Great Lakes Manor and cottage rentals operates as an five-bedroom historical home and three cottages with own private bath, kitchenette, deluxe bedding and amenities. The informal country retreat is suitable for couples, families with children, and seniors.
The historical manor house has been lavishly appointed in muted hues, with a comfortable mix of antiques and traditional comforts in all living areas. The updated kitchen is fully-equipped to satisfy the most discriminating culinary talents. And the five guest rooms, named for each of the five great lakes (Superior, Michigan, Erie, Huron and Ontario) feature plush bedding and deluxe furnishings, and some feature personal tv's and/or fireplaces.
Close to the world-famous Oval Beach (rated by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top 10 beaches and top 25 shorelines in the USA ) and within walking distance of the oldest operating chain ferry in the us, Great Lakes Manor is your perfect family vacation destination available for year-round rental.
Great Lakes Manor and cottages is a retreat for nature-lovers of all ages. It sometimes feels like a family reunion among perfect strangers. Children spy on deer, rabbits and turtles or play hide 'n seek with frogs in the garden pond. Parents relax in the backyard hot tub while steaks sizzle on the grill. Others read quietly on the manor's front porch while a perfectly content guest takes an afternoon nap in a tree-hung hammock.
Our family acquired this property in late 2011 and commenced a major renovation and refurbishment project in time to accept our first guests in late Spring 2012.
We've operated a few other luxury rental properties in other parts of the USA, and specialize in delivering a first-class rental experience for our guests, young and old.
The Smith Family purchased this house in 2011
We love the Saugatuck/Douglas area because of its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago, because of the many fine restaurants and shops in the community, and also because of its active lifestyle and performing arts opportunities.
It's a rarity to be able to stay in a historic property dating back to the 1870's with modern conveniences tastefully upgraded over the years including HVAC, a modern kitchen, and deluxe bedding and bathroom fixtures.
We love the location of your place...close to downtown Saugatuck and Lake Michigan but off the busy streets tucked away in a peaceful setting. We enjoy getting on our bikes and riding down the street to Lake Shore Drive where we can leisurely take in the coastline. This last time we stayed, the weather was so beautiful that we spent time each day sitting relaxing by the pond and enjoying all the birds singing. Our cottage was so clean and fresh. We are definitely coming back!
This is our fourth fun weekend at Great Lakes Manor. And it won't be our last! We're spoiled! Have always gone in a group and taken over the compound. It's perfect for large groups, but I guess couples or small groups will love the coziness and charm as well. The manor house is restored to perfection. Magnificently Appointed. Comfortable. Beautiful. Affordable. The landscaping is absolutely done to perfection. The entire property is so well maintained; bedrooms and bathrooms are perfect. The kitchen has everything - and I mean everything you'll need.- just add food. This past weekend, we left our bikes in Chicago and used bikes at the manor. Staying at such a charming place in such a charming town as Saugatuck....is a joy. We'll be back!
My husband and I had a quick trip to the Saugatuck/Douglas area this past weekend and had the pleasure of staying two nights in the #2 Cottage "The Allegan". It was perfect for the 2 of us. Very comfy and quaint and extremely clean!! Every detail was well thought out. Appreciated all the "extras" that were found here that you would not typically get if staying in a motel. Loved our little deck and the grounds were beautiful. We did not have a chance to use the other amenities available to us (hottub, grill, firepit, rec room, etc) but all look very nice and hope to use them on our next visit. So glad we found this cottage, it will definitely be our first choice when in the area!
Our stay at Great Lakes Manor during late September 2013 was amazing! The Manor House is beautifully restored and extremely well maintained. You will thoroughly appreciate the high quality of finish throughout the house - from the crafted woodwork, impressive furniture, luxurious baths and overall decor. The bedrooms have very comfortable beds, special cotton linens and color coordinated accents. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with quality cookware/appliances/settings. Every furnishing is in top level condition!
The backyard offers a relaxing patio table that easily sits 8-12 people, there is an extra large hot tub with jets everywhere - bar-bq and lots of space off the patio to enjoy the mature trees and bubbling water feature.
Saugatuck is minutes away by car (or an easy walk) and Douglas is a wonderful short walk with many art galleries and two wonderful restaurants - Wild Dog Grille and Everyday People Cafe - but you shouldn't miss Zing Eat Drink restaurant for fabulous food and knockout drinks, not to mention the fantastic decor!
One week is minimum for this delightful area - beautiful towns, wineries, beach walks, 30-45 minute drives up to Holland, MI and Grand Rapids, MI would be a must - and DO NOT MISS the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park - a 132-acre botanical garden and outdoor sculpture park located in Grand Rapids, one of the more amazing outdoor/indoor public botanical/art facilities we have ever seen.
We can't wait to return - and of course - stay at Great Lakes Manor!
