Glenbrook Cottage - restful valley cottage

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage

About the property

Comfortable relaxing cottage set on 90 acres on the slopes of the Wollemi National Park in the heart of the stunning Capertee Valley, an internationally recognised Important Bird Area*.

Home consists of :

- large living / dining room , 3 sofa's around wood burning stove . Air conditioning unit.

- 3 reasonable sized bedrooms

1 Queen sized bed with ensuite bathroom , bath / shower , basin and WC

1 Double sized bed with ensuite bathroom shower , basin , and WC

1 Bedroom with 2 x double single bunks

- Newly fitted out kitchen with electric hotplate , fan oven , microwave and reasonable selection pots , pans and basic necessities

- Large outside deck area over looking valley (and our small flock of sheep/ alpaca's)

All bedrooms and bathrooms have additional heating and the living room fire helps heat the place in the depths of winter. Additional blankets are available if needed for no additional charge.

The kitchen has most basics like coffee / tea / sugar / flour . some herbs / spices/ ketchup and olive oil but if you turn up and find you left that crucial ingredient at home , your chicken has gone off , or you've run out of wine, then pop round and we will see what we can do to help. Being 30 mins away from the nearest shop means you learn to stock up well. We also often have free range eggs when the chooks are laying (kids welcome to collect them if accompanied by an adult).

The cottage has a new TV , DVD player and iPod dock in the lounge are and an old tv / dvd player in the bunk room , but no TV reception or wifi. We are happy to lend DVD's at no charge from our own collection provided they boomerang!. Mobile reception in the valley is a hit and miss affair but there is a booster in the new house (120m away from the cottage, and a landline ) so you can always call / check you mobile / emails there if needed .

All linen and towels included

NB The basic tariiff assumes 2 couples staying for two nights . The basic tariff will be capped at $380per night for a minimum 2 night stay for upto 8 adult guests. The weekly rate is based on four adults . Kids we basically charge $10 per night , additional adults $60pn.We are happy to quote for other permutations (including one couple only ) just drop us a line and we will respond asap.

Optional Extra’s

Pizza Oven - we have finished building our pizza oven between the two houses and it’s great , a huge 1.2m internal cooking area , big enough to take a very large roast! It takes about 2.5 - 3 hours (and a lot of wood ! ) to get the internal floor temperature upto the required 400C-450C to cook a pizza in about 90 seconds. And they come out great. The oven will still be hot enough (200C-250C ) 24 hours later to cook a roast. There is also a large , shall we say , rustic, dining table right next to it so you can dine under the stars . . So if ever you fancied having a go using one of these things weather and fire bans permitting we are happy to help and get it fired up ready for you to use over two days.

Cost $150

Pizza bases @$5 each also available (we make our own) if you simply want to add your own toppings

Dinner option - arriving a bit late and don’t want the hassle of cooking? Subject to enough notice we can often prepare a pretty decent three course meal for you and have ready for you to serve up when you are unpacked . Vegetarian no problem .Happy to provide a few sample menu types but for a start how about Olive Tart, roast chicken with saffron, hazelnuts and honey, chilli salt and fennel pumpkin , garlic sauteed spinach , and sweet and salty cherry crumble cheesecake ? Cost $40ph

The cottage is a really comfortable place to stay and it's hard to describe but everyone that has been here has noted the really relaxing "karma" of the place.

We used it as our weekender for 5 years before committing to build our own place elsewhere on the property . Happy to leave you to enjoy your stay by yourselves , or share what we've learned as city folks who have made the move to the country , built a strawbale home and learned about boys toys , livestock and the rest. Based on our current stockimg density we should be classified as wombat and kangaroo farmers.

We are pet friendly ( we even have some kennels ) .

Apart from one small threshold step the cottage is probably wheel chair accessible . Call us to discuss

Things to do

Bird watching (birders please contact me for useful links), mountain bike riding , painting / sketching and bush walking are the obvious ones. Glen Davis has the old shale oil works and if you are feeling energetic you can walk the pipline trail to Newnes in the Wolgan Valley ( ask me if want a lift to the starting point ) and avoid paying the $2000 a night at the Emirates resort,

In summer there is a lovely safe spot to chill out in the Capertee River 10 mins from here, or 45 mins away Dunn's Swamp (which fortunately is nothing like the image the name conjures up). Sandy beaches , deep swimming areas, canoe hire , camping grounds and boat tours.

Nearby Rylestone (45 mins) boasts the best dumpling restaurant in NSW ( yep , weird we know , but true) , the world's second best olive oil producer (missed out by a tiny fraction on the top slot) , a couple of country pubs and the odd collectibles store. Mudgee and Bathurst are both about 75 mins or so . Gulgong (fantastic museum) , Sofala and Hill End are all within a comfortable day trip.

OR , you could simply sit out on the deck and enjoy a glass or several of your favourite tipple.

Odds n Sods

Basically we want you to enjoy yourselves as our guests . If something is not right , tell us so we can try and put it right. If you need something , want to know something , ask us.

We are on rain water. No chlorine , fluoride or anything else added. But it's our only source of water so please be water wise . That means if you hum in the shower think Beatles rather than Beethoven.

We have not added a cleaning charge to the bill but thats because we expect you to pretty much leave it as you found it . If we have to wash up your sunday roast and the place looks like the aftermath of a bucks party then we reseve the right to charge for breakages and additional cleaning

We will try and be inconspicious for most of your stay , but are on hand if you want to ask us something.

Cosy Cottage in a Spectacular Valley

  • 5 of 5

For a second year in a row, seven of us turned up at Glenbrook Cottage for the Anzac Day Long Weekend. We initially needed a base for attending Ironfest, but now we have fallen for the beautiful scenery of the Capertee Valley.

The owners, Neil and Jane, are very hospitable, and we loved the complimentary

Prosecco , the freshly baked bread and the fire in the slow combustion heater, laid ready to light.

The generous lounge/dining room has lovely wooden floors, three comfortable couches, a fuseball table, a long dining room table and plenty of room for seven adults. We particularly enjoyed the view from the verandah and visiting Noel and Carol, the turkeys in the nearby chook pen. We had a terrific time, Thank you, Neil and Jane. Hope to see you next year!

The perfect place for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a brilliant time thanks, riding bikes all over the property, chatting to the sheep and alpacas, feeding the chickens, playing board games by the fire, reading on the deck. And what a view! The bigger-than-a-cottage had everything we needed and more so with a new fully furnished kitchen, cosy warm beds and lots of comfort. Thanks for the great holiday.

Hidden Gem

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a pet friendly house, and Glenbrook Cottage fitted the bill and more. The Capertee Valley area was new to us, and despite only staying for a short while, we will be back to visit the area again and will stay at Glenbrook Cottage again. The owners were welcoming but not intrusive, with some lovely touches such as fresh eggs, chilled bubbles and a lovely music selection to greet us. The house was clean and comfortable for our family. The view from the balcony is both dramatic and restful, a great place to stay and relax.

An island of piece

  • 5 of 5

Wow. What a magical experience.

As soon as we arrived (later than planned!) with a log fire in full flame, some freshly baked (DELICIOUS!) bread, the house lit up like a Christmas Tree and Neil providing the soundtrack with some pretty dramatic classical music – we knew we were in for a treat.

The house was furnished with such eclectic taste, it really felt like you were sharing someone’s home (without them being on top of you!), we were comfortable in our beds, we played games from the big selection, we explored the beautiful scenery and Neil and Jane were on hand in their nearby home if we had any questions about where to go or what to do.

Highlights for us were the location, the peace and quiet, the milky way visible from the naked eye in the evening and the true Australian vibe of living “out in the country” as well as the animals on the farm (Noel might be grumpy, I think he’s just misunderstood). Top tip – look out for the flying pig!

5 out of 5 for a great weekend, in a great home with great hosts. We’ll be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you Adam , was great to host you guys . Really nice when guests feel the amazing karma in the valley , it just makes you unwind and totally relax. Come back and see us in the depths of winter when the morning frosts make the paddocks all cripsy white and sparkling till the sun gets up , clear nights and a bottle of red round the fire pit . And a very big thank you for leaving the place so nice when you left , very much appreaciated ! Enjoy your time down under .Cheers Neil ps now have two brooding turkeys so in 30 days will find out if Noel is a daddy
