Overview

About the property

This house was designed by Dr Mark Dewsbury, Centre for Sustainable Architecture, University of Tasmania. Mark has designed a house that, on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, aims to capture Tasmania's alpine heartland.

The house is a highly efficient solar passive design, capturing the warmth from the sun and releasing it at night. There is also an air-based heat pump that heats the concrete slab of the house. Insulation is extensive with double glazing throughout.

The 100 acres that the house is on was clear-felled 30 years before purchase and now, 50 years on, the forest is thriving. The house footprint is just 86 square metres yet while compact the design feels spacious.

Cradle Cave features

The house design was inspired by the curved seed pods of native hakea plants. High expansive windows provide extensive views of alpine vegetation creating a sense of being part of the incredible Tasmania mountain high country. While sitting in the warmth of the house you can look out at snow-covered trees, feeling cocooned and protected from the elements.

Various native animals can be spotted day and night with an extensive array of birds, the occasional wombat, possums, paddy melons and wallabies. This is an ideal location for a romantic weekend, family gathering or simply time-out from a busy lifestyle.

'When the sun is shining it's glorious, but even when it's grey, and you're sitting in the warmth with a good glass of red, and looking out at the floor to ceiling nature, it's pretty idyllic',

Back to nature!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as a family of four. We loved our peaceful spot in the middle of the bush. Farm fresh eggs from across the road, and tassie pepper from down the road were perfect for breakfast. All the modern fittings available, and a very warm cosy house. Only a quick drive to Cradle Mountain National Park. We especially loved our night time visitors of paddymelons and possums!

The only things we would have liked were bigger beds (only singles and double) and some more instructions on how to use the appliances.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review Chantel and good to hear you were able to access Scott's farm fresh eggs; we had his turkey eggs when there recently and they're particularly nice. Yes, Tassie peppers have a flavour unlike other peppers and are increasingly being used in very creative ways - in ice cream, vodka, coffee etc! Thanks for the advice regarding appliances, we'll look into finding the manuals and try to add some further instructions. Regards Gail and Alan

Beautiful property Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we found the house lights on fully heated and welcoming ready to go when we arrived spotlessly presented with everything we needed, all the extra little trimmings. We loved sitting behind the full glass front watching the possums come over to say hello, Then waking to find we had had a sprinkling of snow overnight just beautiful, and the house still warm and cozy.

A great place. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The kids loved the bean bags. You can sit in the warmth of this architecturally designed home and watch the possums wallabies walking buy.
