Currarong-An Oasis on the Beecroft Peninsula

Currarong is a small fishing village divided by a tidal creek and surrounded by pristine waters, long sandy beaches, sheltered coves and inlets. A sleepy little place for most of the year, Currarong becomes a vibrant holiday hub during summer and Easter breaks. Only 30 minutes drive from Nowra, there is just one road into Currarong. Warrain Beach, a long surf beach just 8 minutes walk from La Casa Azul, with a north facing aspect offers great opportunities for surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding. You can snorkel the small rocky headlands protruding from the beach and even snorkel the wreck of the Plutus close to the shore. Dolphins frequent this area, cruising and feeding close in, and Humpback Whales bring their calves nearer to shore on their Southern migration.

Abraham Bosom Beach is a sheltered beach perfect for young children and great for snorkelling too. 15 minutes walk down the track will take you to the unspoiled oasis of Honeysuckle Point or Lobster Rock. Both sheltered beaches are great for snorkelling, fishing and, during quiet times, provide you with your own perfect little hideaway.

Cycle, jog or take a leisurely stroll through the bush tracks to the impressive cliffs, rock formations and fantastic views at Gosangs Tunnel, Mermaid’s Inlet or the Beecroft Headland. Great vantage points to see the Humpback Whales as they migrate North and South. Other whale species can also been seen from these vantage points.

There are 2 playgrounds for young children, the one at Dolphin Point across from the shop and affording fantastic views of Warrain Beach and looking as far out as Culburra.

There is excellent fishing from the beaches and rocks surrounding Currarong and several ramps to launch a boat. Great spots for scuba diving as well.

Zac’s café/restaurant offers great seafood, caught fresh on the day. Zac’s also provide take away meals, a general store and bottle shop. Evening bookings are recommended during peak holiday times. The local Bowling Club serves Chinese and Australian food as an alternative.

Tennis courts are available for hire, and the Progress Hall has Bingo 2 or 3 nights a week during peak holiday times. The local craft shop is open a few days a week for an opportunity to browse.

Gorgeous sunsets and fantastic views, birds and wildlife make this a spectacular place for photography.

Places to Visit Nearby

Currarong is a small village on the northern peninsula of Jervis Bay, surrounded by beautiful beaches, a tidal creek, natural bush, rocky cliffs and headlands as well as National Parks. Approximately 2.5 hour drive from Sydney or 3 hours from Canberra, Currarong is an idyllic haven all on its own, yet is close enough to explore spectacular Jervis Bay surrounding areas with ease.

There are many other wonderful beaches in the area and no matter what the wind, you can always find a protected beach or good surf. Jervis Bay is only a few kms away, with beaches such as Cabbage Tree, Long Beach or Honeymoon Bay easily reached by car or pushbike. Experience the great snorkelling of Jervis Bay, walk the pristine white sands or surf at Target Beach.

Point Perpendicular holds the Light House, only 12 kms away, and offers great ocean views as well as views of Jervis Bay and Bowen Island. Watch out for seabirds and seals. Great for photographers too!

South of Nowra you will find the town of Huskisson where you can book in for a Dolphin or Whale Watching cruise, enjoy the shopping & cafes and lovely sandy beaches with great views of Jervis Bay entrance and the light house. A bit further on you will come to Booderee National Park, on the southern side of Jervis Bay, which allows you to further explore the Jervis Bay Marine Park, unspoiled and protected.

Callala Bay, about 12 kms up the road from Currarong provides a further opportunity for supplies, with an IGA supermarket, Chemist, Bottle Shop, Hardware, Cafes and Takeaways. There is also and RSL and a Doctor at Callala Bay. Nearby Culburra also offers similar opportunities, including a Woolworths Supermarket and Bowling Club. Both places also have a golf course.

Berry, just North of Nowra, has knick-knacks, hotels, cafes and many shops of interest. Just west of Berry, is historical Kangaroo Valley, with spectacular scenery of the mountains and river, as well as hotel, shopping and cafes.
