Goolwa Beach is one of the few beaches that can be accessed by 4wd and cars can be driven along the beach to the mouth of the mighty Murray river - the third longest navigable river in the world behind the Nile and the Amazon.
Rolling waves, sand dunes, dune grasses and birdlife are a joy to see all year round and seals often frolic and bask by the Barrage near the township.
The main shopping precinct, close to the river is a short 3-4 minute drive away.
Goolwa is one of the prime river ports of early Australian history being a key transition point for river borne goods to the railway, Victor Harbor and beyond to Adelaide.
Apart from the many historic buildings including the small luxury hotel - The Australasian, the Corio and the Goolwa hotel are well frequented. Walking through the town is full of history and interesting buildings.
The weekend Goolwa Markets are a treat and the Cockle Train and Steam Ranger are a must see. River boats, paddle steamers and a bird hide that offers bird watching activities are all close by.
The area is well served by more modern convenience stores such as Foodland and Woolworths.
The Murray River flows out through the barrages, which are well worth a visit themselves, to see the engineering of the structure maintaining freshwater above and holding back the sea below.
The Coorong, a World Heritage wetland reserve is just beyond.
The Hindmarsh Island Bridge links the mainland to Hindmarsh Island where either Marina style living or humble fishing shacks exist in different areas.
The river Murray flows down from lake Alexandrina, the largest freshwater lake in Australia.
Sailing, boating, fishing, surfing are key activities in the area whilst there are wionderful wineries nearby at Currency Creek, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek.
Goolwa Airport has sky diving, vintage airplanes and biplanes as well are a more modern fleet.
Alexandrina Cheese Factory is also just a short drive away as are the towns of Middleton, Port Elliot and a little further away - Victor Harbor.

A small balcony with BBQ has primary views towards the river and golf course plus views of the nearby Goolwa Beach lookout and ocean surf beach.
You can hear the waves and on Sundays the Cockle train whistle.
An enclosed large rear yard with a separate driveway entry has two dog kennels and a bed allow for dogs to come for a holiday too and the beach walks are often a special treat. (Please bring your own pet bedding)
Downstairs is also self contained and accommodates up to 4 in comfort with a large lounge and much the same features as upstairs plus a smaller kitchen, laundry and separate bathroom.
A Queen size bed in a large bedroom and a comfortable day bed with trundle under (that lifts up to make a possible double bed) can accommodate up to four.
The downstairs unit has minimal steps and offers easy access for those who might find it difficult with stairs.
A separate entry driveway, carport for one car and open off street car parking for more, with a large unenclosed front yard offers space to move or store the van or boat.
