This custom home built in1962, was purchased for extended ohana (family), a stone's throw from original family home, we enjoyed grandparents nearby and space for visiting friends and family. The location of our homes enabled us to enjoy small town living with everything conveniently available to us. Minimal driving allows us to save on time and gasoline.
This home is a custom design with no steps throughout, spacious rooms and fully equipped for a comfortable vacation. Convenient location is minutes away from all the services, shops, museums and activities in Hilo. BIG ISLAND easily accessible: hike a live volcano, enjoy an ocean snorkel and wander through a rainforest in a single day. Zip across Saddle Road to West side to shop and explore and be home for dinner.
I spent one full month in Halekepani House and I enjoyed it immensely. It is vast and comfortable, designed by people who wanted to live in it. You can tell from many details.
Bedrooms have their own patio, with the biggest one suitable for outdoor dining and accessible also from the kitchen. The garden goes all around the property. The furniture meets so well with the spirit of the house, which then hosts all the tools, books, ornaments as collected in a lifetime, so you feel you are living in some close friend's house who is temporarily abroad. And very friendly are indeed the owners, Julie and Samuel, who live in another house just across the street. The street and the whole area is very peaceful, no through traffic, no disturbing noise, just bird calls … I wish I could return anytime soon in Halekepani.
We were spoiled with this house...it was lovely and accommodated our needs perfectly. We were a family of 6 traveling with ages 9-90. We all found the house easy to live in and gorgeous and even better than that were the owners! They attended to our every need and we felt like we were staying in a home, which it is. Hilo is very attractive and easy to get around from this location. We could even see the fireworks in the bay from a couple of blocks away. If you are looking to be in a homey, well appointed atmosphere with wonderful owners, within easy walking distance to downtown Hilo, I would choose this house first!
We rented this home for an extended period during the winter 2013-14. Hale Kepani is a turn key home with complete facilities for comfortable living - well appointed dining room for entertaining, home entertainment system, an extensive private library containing a room full of contemporary fiction and nonfiction, not a "swap shelf". In addition to books, there is an extensive collection of DVDs, music, and games for children of all ages. And with all this, best time is spent on the lanais with breezes. One is an honored guest in someone's home.
Ala Muku street is a short way up the hill from downtown. The area is older residential with easy access to town. Hilo is a small city ( about 50,000) and easy to get around. The street is a dead end so traffic is a minimum and located near a veterans memorial cemetery. Now and then, one hears honor guards and taps mid morning. A number of schools dot the vicinity so the afternoon sounds of children are heard. On the other hand, the airport and most of the "big box" traffic are on the other side of the city a couple miles away; there when needed, out of site and sound otherwise. Ideal from our perspective.
The owners live across the street with very busy lives of their own -- farming, professions and family interests which take them away much of the time, yet one or another was always available when needed.
For those in need of the big west side Hawaii beaches, honky-tonk tourist stuff, and high end restaurants, Kona, Waimea, South Point, the rain forest, and Volcano are wonderful day trips thanks to an excellent road system including a new, high speed saddle road connecting the island's east and west coasts. Kona International Airport, now an hour and 15 minutes away is a viable alternative to Hilo International.
We are sure we will be returning to Hale Kepani.
I hesitate to call this a rental property.... it was my comfortable home for two months. All amenities that would be expected when staying at a close relative's home were waiting for me when I arrived: coffee, wine, snacks, a semi-stocked refrigerator. Even farm-fresh eggs!
Some details for perspective: I stayed here for 9 weeks while working at the university (less than 10 minutes away on bike). I was alone about half of the time, with my wife and two daughters (12- and 1-year old) here for 4 weeks in the middle of my stay. For 10 of the days that my wife was here, my parents also stayed in the house. So anywhere from 1 to 6 slept in the house, and we were never uncomfortable. There were very few complaints from any of my picky family (see below).
Knowing the owners live nearby at first made me worried about a possible lack of privacy. But we were not only left alone to ourselves the entire trip, it was very convenient having them nearby. The propane tank on the grill ran out one evening while cooking, and it was promptly replaced. The beautiful yard was maintained regularly. The more I type, the more I realize how well we were taken care of....
Speaking of the yard: three giant blooming plumeria trees with (wild?) orchids growing in the branches. One has a lilikoi vine growing in it, with passion fruit flowers blooming constantly. There is a lanai on what seems like every side of the house, so shade/sun is available at any time of day.
Downtown Hilo is a 5-minute walk away. Two movie theaters, several restaurants & bars, some churches if you're into that sort of thing, two grocery stores, the Hilo farmers' market.... all within 10 minutes' walk. It really couldn't be more convenient.
A few tiny complaints from my family, just to show that this is an honest review. The mattresses weren't the most comfortable we've slept on. If we were here for a week, this wouldn't have been a problem. But 9 weeks on them, and my back was starting to hurt again. The house is shaped in a "u-shape", with a lanai in the center. Of course there is no air-conditioning, so in the evenings after a hot summer day, the doors and windows were left open. So sitting in the living room or standing in kitchen means a direct look across the lanai into the master bedroom. I didn't care about this, but my wife felt as if she had no privacy when her in-laws were there. That's really the only non-perfect thing about this place.
I really can't wait to return....
We have rented this home for extended periods (3-4 months) for 5 consecutive winters. Needless to say we have been extremely happy here. The home is very comfortable with all the conveniences. Although it is totally handicapped accessible, it is also ideal for those of us who love to walk. It is within easy walking distance to downtown which provides many fine restaurants, theatres and a terrific farmers market, yet it is located on a quiet dead end single family residential area. The home is very spacious, with large bright rooms with direct access to lanais. The kitchen and laundry room are large and well equiped. The yard is large and well landscaped with tangerines in season. The owners, who live accross the street, are friendly and helpful.
Quaint Hilo downtown will delight visitors with many choices: museums, art studios, restaurants, bookstores and a variety of shops. Elks Club with dancing events, YWCA, Boys and Girls Club. There are custom craft shops, HILO Farmers' market, organic and natural groceries, fast food and informal dining. Extensive historic library, banks, massage/ chiropractic/tradional medical and homeopathic clinics, health food store, grocery and drug store, antique shops and many other specialty food and craft shops.
